41. Consumer Law - Tips For Choosing A Vocational School
Finally, Maryland, virginia and the District each have state regulatory bureausthat keep records on vocational schools in their jurisdictions.

front page search community CONSUMER LAW Tips for choosing a vocational school (Published January 10, 2000) By MICHAEL TANKERSLEY Every year thousands of people enroll in vocational schools to develop the skills that they need to apply for new or better jobs as auto mechanics, chefs, computer operators, nurses, cosmetologists, security guards and similar positions. Good vocational training is one of the best ways to get the training needed for specialized jobs and to qualify for higher pay. However, vocational training can also be a disaster. Many individuals who have enrolled in vocational schools with high hopes have left the schools with large debts that they cannot repay and have not improved their ability to get a good job. Vocational schools cost money, and if a school does not provide training that will lead to a better job, the money is not well spent. The initial out-of-pocket cost of enrolling in a vocational school may seem small because schools often offer loans to cover most of the expense. The loans, however, may impose a crushing debt burden in the future. If you are considering vocational training, be sure to carefully research the school before you enroll or sign any papers. Here are some tips on how to evaluate vocational training:

How is a student referred for vocational evaluation?
The Vocational Evaluation Center serves all Virginia Beach City Public Schools' high schools and is currently designed and staffed to provide a comprehensive vocational evaluation for up to two hundred and eighty students per school year. Vocational evaluation referral packets (including referral form, parent permission slip, medical card, and instructions for completing the referral information) are provided to each Virginia Beach high school at the beginning of the school year. Special education teachers obtain parental permission and submit the referral packets for their students. Students in the regular education program should contact their guidance counselors to begin the referral process. Schools are asked to prioritize their students. The students are scheduled on a school-by-school basis, rotating the high schools throughout the school year.

(Wednesday 19th March) ST CIARAN'S CLINCH MCDEVITT CUP WIN Inspired by the remarkable heroics of the St Ciaran's Under-16 team, the School's Under-14 side completed the second leg of a famous double with a 3-12 to 2-9 victory over Falcarragh Communty College in the 2003 McDevitt Cup Final at Clones on Wednesday.
The Donegal representatives showed a lot of spirit in the first half and were still very much in contention at the break when they trailed by a single point (1-6 to 1-5).
However, St Ciaran's stepped up a gear in the second half and the Tyrone champions ran out impressive winners, adding a further 2-6 to their tally before the end, their defence conceding just four more points.
Defensively, the winners were excellent, right through from keeper Pearse Molloy to Francis McElroy, Peter Hughes, Christopher McKenna and others, with Justin McKenna and Martin Rodgers proving a very effective partnership at midfield.
Up front, the chances were created and finished off to good effect, with Darren Carson, Justin Halligan and Darren Canavan all registering goals.

(Wednesday 19th March 2003) ST CIARAN'S WIN THRILLER TO RETAIN ARTHURS CUP St Ciaran's Ballygawley emerged from one of the best Ulster Schools Finals ever contested at any level with a sensational 4-10 to 3-12 triumph over St Paul's Bessbrook at Clones on Wednesday.
St Ciaran's were staring defeat in the face when they fell seven points in arrears midway through extra-time but the Ballygawley side staged a miraculous comeback to retain their title. In an incredible encounter, the teams were inseparable after 60 minutes, St Ciaran's having chalked up 2-8 and St Paul's replying with 1-11. It had been 1-7 to 1-6 in favour of St Paul's at the halfway mark in normal time and the Armagh champions looked as if they were on the verge of a famous result when they went on to produce a storming display in the first period of extra time to lead by 3-12 to 2-8.

a Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, June 6, 2002; Page A08 Pervasive sex segregation persists in high school vocational programs around the country including in Maryland and Virginia 30 years after Congress passed a law barring such discrimination in education, according to a study released today. The D.C.-based National Women's Law Center plans to file legal petitions today in all 12 regions of the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, requesting investigations into whether vocational and technical high schools and classes violate Title IX and demanding that action be taken to remedy all conduct that does not comply with federal law. "There are just stunning patterns of sex segregation in schools across the country," said Jocelyn Samuels, vice president and director of educational opportunities for the law center. "The primary problems in career ed are inattention and lack of perception that there is a problem." The center's survey on vocational programs marks the 30th anniversary of the federal law Title IX of the Education Amendments that bars sex discrimination in schools and other educational programs receiving federal funds. That includes almost all public elementary and secondary schools and most colleges and universities.
