    Special to washingtonpost.com
Wednesday, March 10, 2004; 4:45 PM There are a number of requirements that a prospective teacher has to meet in order gain licensure in Virginia. Requirements for a regular renewable license for teachers in Virginia:
    Licensure Fees
    Interstate Agreement
Virginia has a five-year interstate contract agreement with D.C. and Maryland, allowing the state to issue licenses to applicants who hold current, valid licenses at a comparable level. These applicants must also complete the Praxis I and Praxis II. The tests may be waived for applicants with at least two years of full-time teaching experience in the public schools or an accredited private school, and a provisional license is issued to enable an individual to complete the testing requirements while teaching under contract. Even with the ICA, applicants are required to complete and submit an application for a Virginia license. License Renewal Regular licenses must be renewed every five years. This requires accumulating at least 180 pts through a series of 10 professional development options.

Good teachers are as varied as the methods they use, but they have common characteristics. They are caring individuals, they want to make a difference in the lives of others, and they never stop learning themselves.

Meeting Licensure Requirements Because no college or university in Virginia offers a major in education, students seeking teacher licensure major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline and also take a sequence of education courses. When you graduate from Hollins, you'll be prepared to meet licensure requirements in Virginia and most other states. Hollins began the first graduate program in the Roanoke Valley to allow college graduates in the liberal arts to earn teaching licensure and a master of arts in teaching at the same time.
Students may seek endorsements in elementary education (prek-6), middle education (6-8), or in the following areas in secondary educ ation: art (prek-12), biology (6-12), chemistry (6-12), computer science (6-12), English (6-12), French (prek-12), German (prek-12), Spanish (prek-12), Latin (prek-12), history and social sciences (6-12), mathematics (6-12), choral music (prek-12), and physics (6-12).
The Hollins Program Education courses emphasize content knowledge, principles of teaching and learning, and specific skills. Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Community college actually offers a whole range of options to diverse populations of students, from recent high school grads to mid-career professionals looking to make a career change. They confer not only associate's degrees, but certificates, diplomas, "career studies" certificates and apprenticeships. Some people attend a community college planning to transfer to a four-year bachelor's program later on. Others need only a certificate or associate's degree to get the job they want. Still others actually already have degree, but want certification in a specific skill, like keyboarding, Visual Basic programming, or medical coding. Still others enroll in apprenticeship programs where they learn a skilled trade. Certificates, Diplomas and "Careers Studies" Certificates
