Virginia's New Teachers Get a Boost from Successful ETS PATHWISE Mentoring Program
(Princeton, N.J. Oct. 7, 2003) New teachers in several Virginia school districts and consortia across the state will be getting more support during the "make or break" period of their first years on the job with the expansion of the Educational Testing Service PATHWISE mentoring program. The mentoring program, which has already yielded positive results in Newport News, will benefit from a $1 million federal grant to fund programs that support new teachers and keep them in the classroom. "Research shows that 30 percent of new teachers quit during their first three years of teaching and almost half quit after five years," said Cindy Tocci, Director of ETS Product Development "The problem is most acute in high-poverty areas in Virginia. Teachers who quit cite a lack of support as the chief cause of their departure. Expanding the PATHWISE mentoring program can make a difference in keeping good teachers in the classrooms to help Virginia's students. The Mentor Teacher Pilot Grants will allow six school systems and four regional consortiums of school districts a total of 32 largely rural and impoverished divisions to boost mentoring programs that support new teachers. Grantees using the PATHWISE program include:

CNU Extends its Vision Online
A fervor and excitement is beginning to take place across the campus of Christopher Newport University. It's more than the growing on-campus student body and new building projects that have changed the face of the University - it's the transformation of the presentation of the school's vision online During the past six months members of the CNU community have reviewed numerous leading university web sites and have created a new visual context for telling the story of CNU. As work on the site has progressed, seven themes have begun to emerge. To date three of those have been completed including About CNU Admissions and Student Life . Work on the other four - will take place in stages between now and late fall.

The Darden School at the University of Virginia How do you bring the intense experiences found in crisis management situations to business students and prepare them effectively for the challenges of the real world?
Situation
As students navigate through the application, the choices they make for the company are evaluated based on the impact each decision will have upon employees, customers, and shareholders. Various types of media, including text, graphics, charts, audio, and video, are presented to all users or to a specific team member, and different scenario paths are taken based upon the decisions made by the students. A decision made too hastily or without communication among team members can quickly cause the company fortunes to spiral downward.

With a concentration in school library media services, a graduate might pursue a library career in a private or public, elementary or secondary educational institution. Most school library media positions in public schools require state certification of the school library media specialist as a teacher. This teacher certification must be acquired by the student independently of the library school. The student should verify with his/her local certification board that the courses for which he/she enrolls meet all certification requirements.
The course of study listed below has program accreditation by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
