Creeds Elementary School Will Celebrate Renovation
Creeds Elementary School will hold a dedication ceremony to celebrate their completed renovation of the school on Sunday, October 7th at 2 p.m. Creeds is located at 920 Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach. Sunday's dedication ceremony will include some special guest speakers-Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf, Dan Edwards, Chairman of the Virginia Beach School Board, and Dr. Tim Jenney, Superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
Robin Davenport, Principal of Creeds, will preside over the ceremony. Mr. Davenport is the first school division administrator to return to the school where he started. He attended Creeds as a student from 1958 to 1965. His mother was the cafeteria manager of the school from 1960 to 1980. After teaching for nineteen years in the school system, Mr. Davenport then served as an assistant principal for five years-three years at Bettie F. Williams Elementary and two years at Creeds. This is Mr. Davenport's fourth year as Principal of Creeds.
Creeds Elementary is presently the oldest school in the Virginia Beach City Public School system. It has been transformed as the result of a $6.9 million dollar building renovation program. As a result of the renovation, the building includes new amenities such as a larger main office and clinic, kindergarten classrooms, special education classrooms, a new cafeteria and kitchen, library/media center, computer lab, art classroom, music classroom and a larger physical education facility. Included in the renovation was the upgrading of all systems-plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and lighting. All rooms were outfitted with new furniture and equipment. The construction project also included the addition of a 4,500 square-foot public library located adjacent to the new Creeds Library/Media Center. The City of Virginia Beach Pungo/Blackwater Library is operated in partnership with Creeds Elementary Library/Media Center.

Library Instruction in K-12 Schools
by Lisa Denton A school library media center is a very busy place. In It are students, teachers, and library media Specialists as well as books, reference tools, audiovisual and electronic resources. There is but a single motivation in bringing all these factors together: the effective access and use of information and ideas. The new Information Power II (American Library Association, 1998) informs the school librarian that the mission of the library media program is to "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." In the swiftly moving world of information, library instruction must now be fashioned to achieve that goal. Librarians with files full of lesson plans on the illustrious Mr. Dewey and the Reader's Guide have found themselves waking up on the wrong side of the bed with the new dawning of curriculum integration of library skills. It is widely accepted that library skills should not be taught in isolation. Collaboration is now the shape of library instruction. This type of library instruction integrates Information Literacy Skills with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Information Literacy Skills are enumerated in the publication Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning prepared by the American Association of School Librarians with the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (ALA, 1998). They are designed to provide school librarians and teachers with a framework for information proficiency, student achievement and life-long learning skills. They address those skills necessary for proficiency in three main areas: information literacy, independent learning, and social responsibility.

Citizen Net Students in Fauquier’s two 1,500-student high schools must feel like they’re "living in a city," he said. Mr. Hopewell this week urged county leaders to build two 750-student high schools, instead of a $36-million, 1,200-student facility proposed by the school board. He also told the board of supervisors Tuesday to forgo a fall bond referendum on building a third high school. The county can’t afford to give voters "the chance to say ‘no’ to a new school," said Mr. Hopewell, a founding member of a group seeking to re-ignite the debate on school size. Mr. Hopewell also writes a regular opinion column for The Fauquier Citizen. "It depends on who’s putting these rankings together," Superintendent J. David Martin said this week.

It’s a tough and stressful job. They face a lack of equipment, staff shortages, and patients who are often unable to pay for medical care. Ghana’s current health system requires that all medical bills must be paid before the patient leaves the hospital; hospitals actually employ security guards to make sure no one leaves without paying their bills. But now the Ghanaian government is introducing a health insurance scheme, to make health care more affordable for all the country’s citizens. Joy FM’s Akwasi Sarpong speaks with Korle-Bu’s staff and patients about the challenges facing them and the future prospects for change. This program is part of our special international collaboration, Global Perspectives: Check-up on World Health. Fuqua School, Virginia
Fuqua School of Farmville, Virginia, seventy miles west of Richmond, has a population of nearly 700 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. In 1994, a general purpose building was added to the lower school campus. True to Fuqua Schools dedication to science and technology, alternatives were explored to determine the most efficient system for heating and cooling the new building. While projected cost savings were a major reason for choosing geothermal, Fuqua School realized many other benefits as well. Fuqua's 18,000 square foot lower school's general purpose building is designed to fit diverse needs. It consists of classrooms, a computer center with 20 computers, a music and art center, a media center with 14 additional computers, administrative offices, a library, a science lab, and a 7,000 square foot auditorium/gymnasium which is also used as a lunchroom for children pre-kindergarten through grade five. The installation at Fuqua has a closed-loop, 52 ton, water source system. There are 36 wells, 6 inches in diameter and 285 feet deep. There are 1,625 gallons of water with no antifreeze solution added. Two-thirds to three quarters of the energy needed to run the heat pumps comes naturally from the ground. The temperature is 57 degrees Fahrenheit below 32 feet. There are more than 4.7 miles of 1and 2 inch piping installed below the surface.

It’s time for the N n ation’s children to be head ing back to school and back to school lunch. Because parents and health professionals are interested in the nutrition quality of the meals being offered in school cafeterias, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) graded the nutrition quality of the menus offered in ten of the largest U.S. school U.S. districts participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
The NSLP is a federally assisted meal program operating in nearly 100,000 public and nonprofit private schools and residential childcare institutions. Schools that choose to participate in the program receive cash subsidies, donated commodities, and free bonus shipments for each meal served. In return, they must serve lunches that meet federal nutrition requirements, as well as offer free or reduced-price lunches to eligible
