Military Research on the Internet
Matthew D. Bird
From Army History Issue 33, Winter 1995 The Interneta global network of computers at government sites, libraries, and universities around the worldcan be a valuable research tool for the military scholar. Internet users can "visit" museums and military academies remotely, participate in electronic discussions on topics of interest, search the library catalogs of hundreds of libraries around the world, and retrieve press releases, photographs, and sound recordings. There are virtual libraries and online reading rooms accessible twenty-four hours a day on the Internet, through which users can read and retrieve portions of dictionaries, encyclopedias, speeches, classic books, and other information. Internet users can also obtain the full text of historical documents such as the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, the colonial Military Instructions of 1636, the U.S. Constitution, the German and Japanese surrender documents of 1945, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution of 1964, and many others.
  • "Visit" military sites on the Internet such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) or the Military Academy at West Point, New York, and browse their offerings.

electing Virginians of the Year , even for a Kosmos-sized piece of Bacon's Rebellion, requires one to seek out candidates with vision, courage, honesty, leadership and accomplishment. Reviewing the challenges and events of 2002 brings the 15 women and men who lead the senior colleges and universities of the Commonwealth right to the top of the list. The selection process was straightforward. Standing where budget deceit and real numbers collide, where quality education competes with passing fancy and where political pressures whittle down truth, 13 presidents, one superintendent and one chancellor were honest in putting the difficult financial and quality choices squarely to their students, faculty, staff and boards of visitors.

I just found this part of BabyCenter and hope I can tap into all of your wisdom. We are PCSing from Maxwell AFB to Chantilly, VA (in the D.C. area). We have 4 kids 3 boys and a 5 month old baby girl. We bought a house in Reston, VA (very scary with housing prices in that area!) and I will be going back to work part-time after Labor Day.
Do any of you have some advise on daycare in the Reston area? Most places have REALLY long wait lists which just don't work when we just got orders. How about doctors/pediatricians? It is my understanding that we are too far away from the bases, so we can choose a civillian tricare doc. How about hair stylists? I want someone REALLY good at cutting hair and some place upscale and refined (I figure I'm in the big city and I may not be in 2 years).
Any words of wisdom on the area would be great. Thanks!

Sen. Warner: Military funding benefits Virginia
The senator called on the General Assembly to restore financial stability to the state. By Kevin Miller and Michael Sluss
Archives
Reprint RICHMOND - In a clear message to anti-tax lawmakers within his party, U.S. Sen. John Warner said Friday that Virginia's ongoing struggle to fund essential government services is jeopardizing the future of military bases critical to the state's economic health. The remarks from Virginia's senior member of Congress further illustrate a philosophical divide within the state Republican leadership over tax reform and come just two days after a House committee rejected Gov. Mark Warner 's reform package. Sen. Warner, a five-term incumbent Republican and chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, called on General Assembly members to let "politics be damned" and to restore financial stability to the state. Inaction, the senator warned, could significantly harm the quality of life that has historically helped protect Virginia's military installations from closure. "I simply want to urge you to face up to the reality, from my perspective ... that some combination of additional revenues, additional user fees and some combination of budget reductions have to be the principle complex to the solution to this problem facing our state today," Warner said during a news conference in the Capitol.

"Protecting Our Military Families in Times of War"
A Military Family Bill of Rights
    As Prepared for Delivery
One year ago this week, American soldiers raced across the desert to Baghdad. Ten months ago, George Bush stood on an aircraft carrier and proclaimed "mission accomplished." But today we know that the mission is not finished, hostilities have not ended, and our men and women in uniform fight on almost alone with the target squarely on their backs. Everyday, they face danger and death from suicide bombers, roadside bombers, and now ironically, from the very Iraqi police they are training. We are still bogged down in Iraq - and the Administration stubbornly holds to failed policies that drive potential allies away. What we have seen is a steady loss of lives and mounting costs in dollars, with no end in sight. We were misled about weapons of mass destruction. We are misled now when the costs of Iraq are not even counted in the President's budget. But having gone to war, we have a responsibility to keep and a national interest to achieve in a stable and peaceful Iraq. To leave too soon would leave behind a failed state that inevitably would become a haven for terrorists and a threat to our future, a problem for the Middle East, and a dangerous setback in the war against terror.
