The White-De Bry Map of Virginia (1590)
In 1590 Theodor De Bry published Part I of his America Some features unique to the White-De Bry are corrections; others are errors; still others may be based on sketch maps now lost. Following is the key to the White-De Bry map which was taken, with many liberties, from Appendix I of David B. Quinn's Roanoke Voyages (London, 1955).

Americae pars... (upper right corner): "Part of America, now called Virginia, first discovered by the English, taken up by Sir Walter Ralegh, Knight, in 1585 [ sic ] A.D., in the twenty-seventh [year] of the reign of our most serene Queen Elizabeth; the history whereof is truly described by this special book and also by the images of the natives included." Apasus : Probably a village of the Algonquian Chesapeake tribe (see Chesepiooc) in present-day Virginia Beach, Va., perhaps between Lynnhaven Inlet and Little Creek. The name may mean "he basks in the sun." Aquscogoc: Probably a town of the Secotan tribe (which see) . Englishmen burned it in a dispute over a missing silver cup in July 1585. It evidently stood in present-day Hyde County, N.C., on the Pungo River or one of its eastern tributaries. Threes sites (31HY5, 6, and 7) north of Slade Creek seem plausible. It is tempting, but inadvisable, to seek an etymological connection with the Asparagus Creek site (31HY8).

Founding the American Colonies
The history of the original 13 colonies is a tangled tale indeed. There are many ways to view the events and, in hind sight, it is easy to think you understand. But no one knew where they were headed at the time and it could have ended up very different.

(August-October 1781) The commemorative (and romanticized) painting of the allied headquarter's staff depicts generals Rochambeau and Washington, who along with Admiral De Grasse can be credited with conducting the exemplary combined and joint military operations in the Yorktown Campaign of 1781. It was a tribute to their individual characters and professionalism that the complexities of such operations succeeded, given that neither of the army commanders spoke the language of the other. Strategic Aspects:
  • ARRIVAL of FRENCH EXPEDITION
  • ALLIED CONFERENCES
  • RECONNAISANCE of NEW YORK
  • SOUTHERN OPERATIONS in VIRGINIA
  • DE GRASSE ARRIVES from the WEST INDIES
10 July 1780
French squadron, under de Ternay, escorting transports carrying Rochambeau's expedition arrived off Rhode Island coast. Rochambeau disembarked at Newport 12 July.
For the remainder of the year, the French expedition took no military action. At their main camp near Newport, the French established a reputation of being a highly discplined force, and were eventually well received by the local citizens. The French hussar cavalry acquired horses [they departed France with none] and camped for the winter at Lebanon, CN, where there was better forage conditions.
20-22 September 1780
Washington and Rochambeau first met at Hartford, CN, mid way between the American and French camps.
