It is currently providing limited walk-in service while renovations to the entrance, the public service desks and other critical components of the building are underway. The Library had originally scheduled the reopening for Tuesday, May 18th. Every effort was made to limit the interruption of public service and to maintain the highest level of interim service. Concerns for the safety of library customers and staff during the final days of the renovation form the basis of the decision to continue to be closed until June 1, 2004.

For the latest information from the ACLU, go to http://www.aclu.org August 5, 1997: Virginia Library Board Adopts Internet Restrictions A Virginia library board has adopted one of the strictest Internet use policies in the country, a move that has placed it under the watchful eye of civil libertarians across the country, the Washington Post reports. The Loudoun County policy, which passed on a 5 to 3 vote after a contentious public hearing, specifies that anyone younger than 17 who wants unfiltered access to the Internet must have a parent or guardian present when they use the computer. Adults who would like access to all Internet sites must request it from a library employee. "I am right off the bat alarmed by the fact that adults would have to make a special request for information that is constitutionally protected," Ann Beeson, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union in New York, told the Post. "We are in general opposed to the use of filtering products, but the crucial question here is which product, which filter, will be used." And that, the Post says, is the county's next move: to find sophisticated software that will restrict the risque while keeping all the good stuff the Internet has to offer.
