New 04/20/04 Fedora release 1.2.1 is now available for download.
VTLS, Inc. has announced the release of Vital, which provides "VTLS developed workflow extensions, management utilities and enhanced searching capabilities" built on top of the Fedora repository system architecture. For further information about Vital, please see the VTLS, Inc. home page Information about Red Hat Inc.'s Use of The Fedora Name The Fedora project was funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to build an open-source digital object repository management system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The new system demonstrates how distributed digital library architecture can be deployed using web-based technologies, including XML and Web services. Jointly developed by the University of Virginia and Cornell University, the system completely implements the Fedora architecture that was originally conceived of at Cornell. Fedora is a general-purpose digital object repository system that can be used in whole or part to support a variety of use cases including: institutional repositories, digital libraries, content management, digital asset management, scholarly publishing, and digital preservation. Upcoming versions of the software will add important functionality, such as Shibboleth-based authentication, fine-grained policy enforcement, workflow support, enhanced preservation features, and performance enhancements to support extremely large repositories.

Virginia library battle rages
Last modified: March 10, 1998, 5:10 PM PST By Courtney Macavinta
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Free speech advocates in Virginia today are trying to halt passage of a law that would force public libraries to install filtering programs on all computers with Net access. The move is the latest twist in a battle raging in that stateand elsewhere in the nationregarding the constitutionality of public institutions restricting access to certain Net sites. Most policies target sexually explicit or illegal material, but civil liberties groups have long argued that the technology used to block such sites also bars content with redeeming social value. People For the American Way (PFAW) today called on the Virginia state legislature to reject an amendment buried in a House appropriations bill that would mandate all Virginia public libraries to install blocking software on library computers to get state funding. A similar provision was pushed in Ohio last year "We've found that censoring software has blocked things like information on breast cancerbecause it contains the word 'breast'and information on Middlesex County, because it contains the word 'sex.' This amendment is an unconstitutional 'solution' in search of a problem," PFAW president Carole Shields said in a statement.
