The Art of Ancient Mali Geography P resent-day Mali, at nearly twice the size of Texas, is the largest country in West Africa. Mali is bordered by seven other countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Mauritania. Most of the northern half of Mali falls within the largest desert on the planet, the Sahara. The central section of Mali is made up of semi-arid land that is part of a larger region known as the Sahel. Sahel is an Arabic word meaning, “shore,” although, in this case, it can be thought of as the shore of the desert rather than the ocean. The Sahel is nearly 3,000 miles long and from 200 to 700 miles wide in a span across the continent of Africa. It is an area that is gradually being taken over by the southward creep of the Sahara Desert. In the southwestern region of Mali, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful and the climate is slightly more hospitable. Mali's most important geographic feature is the Niger River. The Niger River stretches over 2,500 miles through four countries: Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. It arches up alongside the Sahara until it turns south towards the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river spreads out and opens into an inland delta. Only about 2 percent of Mali is arable. In this dry climate, it is the Niger River that provides the main source of subsistence, providing fish, drinking water, and water for farming. Growing food in this region depends on the annual flooding of the Niger River, which has traditionally provided fertile plains along its banks.

Urban Studies and Geography and
Urban and Regional Planning Programs We offer courses of study leading to: The programs are supported by a full-time faculty trained in architecture, economics, environmental studies, geography, history, planning, and political science and by practicing professionals from the many public and private agencies in the Richmond area.
Employment opportunities for our graduates exist in a wide variety of fields, for example planning departments, housing authorities, transportation agencies, community development corporations, private consulting firms, and social welfare agencies, among others. To study the city is to study human life itself. To know ourselves and to know something about others, we must know the setting where we live, work, shop, worship, and play. It is only natural, therefore, that the field of urban studies encompasses the social sciences and the humanities. Students of urban life know the history of urban growth, the operation of urban economies, the relationship between human activity and the natural environment, architectural styles, the city's social geography, and the distribution of political power.

The Regions of Virginia Print this activity sheet to do as you investigate the regions of Virginia. Use this page and your textbook to help you. Look at the land around your house or school. Is the land flat or hilly? Is there a river or lake nearby? When we study the land, we are learning geography A large area where the land does not change much and the weather is often the same is called a physical region . Virginia has five physical regions. Virginia's five physical regions are called Virginia's Coastal Plain (Tidewater) , the Piedmont , the Blue Ridge Mountains , the Valley and Ridge and the Appalachian Plateau regions. Virginia's Coastal Plain (Tidewater) Region is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. A coastal plain is a large area of flat or gently rolling land that is bordered by a large area of water. Virginia's Coastal Plain extends inland as far as the Fall Line , a narrow zone of small waterfalls and rapids that occurs at the point where the major rivers pass over ancient rocks of the Piedmont to the eroded sands, clays, and shales of the Coastal Plain. Wide areas of Virginia's Coastal Plain are flat and low-lying. Tidal swamps and marshes border the rivers as far as the Fall Line.

History and Social Science: World Geography
The focus of this course is the study of the world's peoples, places, and environments, with an emphasis on world regions. The knowledge, skills, and perspectives of the course are centered on the world's population and cultural characteristics, landforms and climates, economic development, and migration and settlement patterns. Spatial concepts of geography will be used as a framework for studying interactions between humans and their environments. Using geographic resources, students will employ inquiry, research, and technology skills to ask and answer geographic questions. Particular emphasis is placed on students' understanding and applying geographic concepts and skills to their daily lives. Geographic skills provide the necessary tools and technologies for thinking geographically. These skills help people make important decisions in their daily lives, such as how to get to work and where to shop, vacation, or go to school. They also help people make reasoned political decisions and aid in the development and presentation of effective, persuasive arguments for and against matters of public policy. All of these decisions involve the ability to acquire, arrange, and use geographic information. Maps, as well as graphs, sketches, diagrams, photographs, and satellite-produced images, are essential tools of geography.
