Virginia Standards of Learning for World Geography
The focus of this course is the study of the world's people, places, and environments with historical emphasis on Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. The knowledge, skills, and perspectives of the course are centered on the world's population and cultural characteristics, its countries and regions, land forms and climates, natural resources and natural hazards, economic and political systems, and migration and settlement patterns. Spatial concepts of geography will be linked to chronological concepts of history to set a framework for studying human interactions.
The course will emphasize how people in various cultures influence and are influenced by their physical and ecological environments. Using texts, maps, globes, graphs, pictures, stories, diagrams, charts, and a variety of geographic, inquiry/research, and technology skills, students consider the relationships between people and places while asking and answering geographic questions.
The student will use maps, globes, photographs, and pictures to analyze the physical and human landscapes of the world in order to

Related Category: U.S. Political Geography West Virginia is well drained; its important rivers include the Tug Fork, the Big Sandy River, the New River, the Kanawha, the Little Kanawha, the Cheat, and the Monongahela, all of which find their way to the Ohio. The New River and the Kanawha combine to form the most important waterway entirely within the state. West Virginia's climate is generally of the humid continental type, with hot summers (except in the highest areas) and cool to cold winters. West Virginia's natural beauty is spectacular, and the excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing offered here form the basis of a growing tourist industry. The state has numerous state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest (most of which is in Virginia) are in West Virginia. Mineral springs are scattered throughout the state, notably at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and White Sulphur Springs. Other tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (see National Parks and Monuments , table) and various mounds built by ancient peoples, most notably Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nation's largest.

Cultural Maps is dedicated to the graphical presentation of non-graphical information whatever that turns out to mean. At present, it has something to do with maps in the ordinary and normal sense of the term; the immediate goal is to build a digital American Historical Atlas. To the extent that maps serve as guides not only to the physical terrain but also and importantly as charts of the mapmaker's mental and cultural terrain, of the memories and desires, anxieties and assumptions he projects upon any terra incognita, we have begun building an historical geography of America. Eventually, this space will come to include graphs, charts, and images, in fact anything that serves as a concrete and physical representation of abstract ideas and intangible feelings.

Virginia holds an important place in American history, as it was home to many of the founding fathers, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Mason, and Patrick Henry. Four of America's first five presidents were Virginians. During the Civil War, Richmond, Virginia's capital, was the capital of the Confederacy. Virginia was the site of some of the most important events in American history. The first permanent English settlement was established by the Virginia Company at Jamestown in 1607. Abbreviation:
WV In 1861, Virginians in the northwestern part of the state defied Virginia's secession from the United States. The region chose to remain in the Union and form a new state. West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. The state motto is "Mountaineers are always free", and West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the "Mountain State". With an average altitude of 1,500 feet above sea level, it's the highest of any state east of the Mississippi River. For a long time, West Virginia was a leading producer of coal in North America, but many people left to pursue better employment opportunities. That trend has turned around, and now the state's economy is in a more stable condition. West Virginia, in the Appalachian Highlands, has some of the most rugged land in the United States. The state has very few large areas of level ground, except for strips of valley land that lie along the larger rivers. Forests of valuable hardwood trees grow on the mountain slopes and vast mineral deposits lie under the ground. Beautiful scenery, mineral springs and a variety of wildlife attracts tourists, campers, hunters and fishing enthusiasts.

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY Physical Features Virginia (which lies between the extremes of latitude 36'32' and 39'27' N and longitude 75'15' and 83-41' W) before 1851 recognized officially, for statistical purposes, four "grand divisions": Tidewater, Piedmont, Valley, and TransAllegheny. Since the loss of West Virginia only southwestern Virginia remains of the last division. Geographical differences in these divisions have profoundly influenced Virginia's life and history. Tidewater - Tidewater is a level plain of alluvial soil lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Fall Line (q.v.), the latter a distinct break in the crystalline rock formation of Piedmont, a line where waterfalls furnish power for mills and act as a barrier to advancing tides. Running southwestwardly across Tidewater are four great rivers-the lower Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James, the lower reaches of which form estuaries of Chesapeake Bay into which they empty. At the Fall Line, which runs north and south, cities-Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Petersburg-arose about trading posts at the bead of navigation and on the mill sites at the falls. Piedmont - Piedmont, the largest of the geographical provinces, lies between the Fall Line and the Blue Ridge Mountains (q.v.), extending in width 40 mi. (64 km.) at the north and 185 mi. (298 km.) along the southern border. It is a relatively low, rolling plateau region cut by many streams.

    http://www.zanesville.ohiou.edu/geography/virginia/
The Nine Regions of Virginia How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time - you can't swallow a whole elephant at once. And it's easier to examine Virginia in small chunks as well. But how do you split - or lump - the pieces together? Does "Southwest Virginia" start at Roanoke, or Bristol? Do the suburbs of Richmond include Goochland? Is Fredericksburg in Northern Virginia? Jim Fonseca, when he was a geography professor at George Mason University, before becoming Dean of the Ohio University-Zanesville campus, ended up with 9 regions that seemed to "fit together." Here's how he saw it after years of studying Virginia, in an article published in the Virginia Geographer (Fall-Winter, 1990 issue): The human geography of contemporary Virginia is the product of complex interaction between the state's physical environment and its human population. The diverse physiographic regions of the statethe Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Appalachian Plateauare important influences, but they are not the only factors explaining regional population distribution and economic activity in the Commonwealth. One of the more critical factors influencing Virginia's geography is the location of the state in reference to larger multistate regions, such as Megalopolis, Appalachia, and the Piedmont Manufacturing Belt. The boundaries of these regions are seldom sharply demarcated, either on the national or the Virginia landscape. However, a useful approximation of their spatial extent in Virginia can be obtained by analyzing the state's physical geography in terms of social and economic data for nine contemporary regions that are based on the boundaries of the state's

These topographic map exercises are intended to serve as an introduction to topographical maps and to the physical and cultural geography of Virginia. They may also be used as a laboratory supplement to college course in introductory physical geography. These map exercises have been used for several years with great success in classes in Physical Geography and in the Geography of Virginia at George Mason University. They may also be used by junior high and high school students. The exercises are arranged by physiographic regions.
