is one of the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast. Its entire Western border is in the Appalachian mountians, which run from Southwest to Northeast. Approaching from the ocean, one would enter the great port city of Norfolk , first passing its even more populous suburb, Virginia Beach. Neighboring cities include Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake . This area is generally called Hampton Roads. It is also known as the Tidewater, together with everything east of Washington and Richmond.
(Bear in mind that lawyers in Virginia typically practice in several counties and cities.)
Two hours West of Norfolk is Richmond , the capital. Two hours Northwest of Richmond is Charlottesville , just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Thomas Jefferson lived near there. Beyond these mountains lies the great Shennandoah Valley , and then the Allegheny mountains and desolateWest Virginia, a completely separate State which is not affiliated in any way with Virginia.
Two hours North of Richmond, Washington, D.C., the U.S.'s capital, lies in an independent district between Virginia and Maryland.

http://www.virginiacity.com/hv07.htm
The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.

In so doing, they record the values and concerns of their culture and society. Virginians have produced a wide variety of maps documenting everything from land disputes to the location of burial grounds. Maps of cities range from simple plats of lots to complicated documents displaying population densities, personal economic status, and crime rates. Land development companies printed inexpensive maps to advertise their lots for sale. Maps reflected the growing tourist trade beginning in the mid-1800s, and today's official state map distributed annually by the Virginia Department of Transportation highlights the many tourist destinations in the state. Maps of cities and towns also include maps used by fire insurance companies that detail the changes in building materials and the development of public services. Policies of the

Urban and Regional Planning Programs We offer courses of study leading to: The programs are supported by a full-time faculty trained in architecture, economics, environmental studies, geography, history, planning, and political science and by practicing professionals from the many public and private agencies in the Richmond area.
Employment opportunities for our graduates exist in a wide variety of fields, for example planning departments, housing authorities, transportation agencies, community development corporations, private consulting firms, and social welfare agencies, among others. To study the city is to study human life itself. To know ourselves and to know something about others, we must know the setting where we live, work, shop, worship, and play. It is only natural, therefore, that the field of urban studies encompasses the social sciences and the humanities. Students of urban life know the history of urban growth, the operation of urban economies, the relationship between human activity and the natural environment, architectural styles, the city's social geography, and the distribution of political power.
