FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA Geography and regional characteristics
high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

    Geography
Located midway along the eastern seaboard of the United States, south of Maryland, north of Virginia and 233 miles south of New York City, the Washington, DC metropolitan area refers to the District of Columbia, plus 7 Maryland counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's), 5 Virginia counties (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William and Stafford) and 5 Virginia cities (Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park).
The District of Columbia is 67 square miles and divided into 4 quadrants: Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast. The U.S. Capitol building marks the center where the quadrants meet. Numbered streets run north-south. Lettered streets run east-west (there are no J, X, Y or Z streets), becoming 2-syllable names, then 3-syllable names as you travel farther out from the center. Avenues named for U.S. states run diagonally, often meeting at traffic circles and squares. Elevation in Washington DC highest is 420 feet; lowest is sea level.

    The Capital Cities of Virginia
Richmond has not always been the capital of Virginia. Each shift of the capital occurred for a reason. Some of the buildings that housed the legislature, and places where they were located, are described by the official About Our Capitol site - but somehow the move of the capital to Wheeling and Alexandria has been omitted from the official site. NOTE: The "state capitol" is the building that houses the Virginia General Assembly. The "capital" is the city in which the General Assembly meets. At the Federal Level, Washington DC is the capital city and the US Congress meets in the Capitol building. Charlottesville, Staunton, and Lynchburg could claim to have been the capital of Virginia, since the General Assembly met there briefly.

    Wheeling
Wheeling was the capital of Virginia for two years. The Restored Government of Virginia was formed after the special state convention in Richmond finally voted for secession in April, 1861 (after rejecting that approach since the convention statered in February). The northwestern counties in the Allegheny Plateau physiographic province rejected the legitimacy of the decision. They claimed the decision by the convention in Richmond was not legal, because the Constitution did not grant states the right to seceded. Since the elected leaders in Richmond had exceeded their authority, the state government had to be re-formed with new leaders.
