West Virginia. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) West Virginia, the "Mountain State"
Abbreviation:
WV In 1861, Virginians in the northwestern part of the state defied Virginia's secession from the United States. The region chose to remain in the Union and form a new state. West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. The state motto is "Mountaineers are always free", and West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the "Mountain State". With an average altitude of 1,500 feet above sea level, it's the highest of any state east of the Mississippi River. For a long time, West Virginia was a leading producer of coal in North America, but many people left to pursue better employment opportunities. That trend has turned around, and now the state's economy is in a more stable condition. West Virginia, in the Appalachian Highlands, has some of the most rugged land in the United States. The state has very few large areas of level ground, except for strips of valley land that lie along the larger rivers. Forests of valuable hardwood trees grow on the mountain slopes and vast mineral deposits lie under the ground. Beautiful scenery, mineral springs and a variety of wildlife attracts tourists, campers, hunters and fishing enthusiasts.

3rd Fittest America's Fattest Cities 2004 Main Survey sources and methods Ways for any city to become fitter Let us know what you think ... America's Fattest Cities 2000 Virginia Beach is the 3rd fittest city in America this year, up from 8th last year. Much of this has to do with a dramatic turnaround in TV viewing. Virginia Beach-area residents are no longer the couch potatoes they were last year, when they had the third highest viewing rate among all cities in our survey. This year, they have the second lowest viewing rate among all 50 cities surveyed - Minneapolis grabbed the #1 slot, according to Nielsen Media Research. Residents are enjoying fitness walking and bicycling out in the fresh air. Locals are on the right track for a healthy lifestyle, by choosing fruit and veggies over donuts, according to CDC's Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey. One area that calls for improvement is access to health care. Two years in a row, Virginia Beach has been ranked second to last nationwide for this category. The good news is that locals are taking pleasure in the plentiful amenities Virginia Beach has to offer, such as golf courses, city parks and outdoor basketball courts.

Can you imagine what that might do to commuter patterns and property values in the two cities? Transportation as we know it will change in the future, bringing some radical changes in the fortunes of some places, according to a new book co-authored by Paul Knox, Distinguished Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech and Sallie Marston, professor of geography at the Universeity of Arizona ( Places and Regions in Global Context , Prentice Hall in 1997). "The first generation of smart cars and trucks, with onboard microprocessor-based electronics, is already on the road," Knox says. High-speed rail systems are already in place in parts of Europe, and are expanding rapidly. Plans for a new Japanese "rocket plane" are on the drawing board. Over the long term, regions having access to the new modes of transportation will prosper, while those without access will be passed by.

An Elevation Profile Of Virginia
by James W. Fonseca and William Vaughan This is a description of a project in which an elevation profile (topographic profile) of Virginia was constructed along a transect line from the Atlantic Ocean to the western edge of the state along the Kentucky border. We are detailing the steps in the construction of the profile to encourage geography students to create their own profiles. Then we will analyze the profile and discuss how it relates to Virginia's physical geography. This article was first published in the Virginia Geographer (Fall-Winter, 1991 issue).
Constructing the Profile
When the project was in its planning stage, the first consideration was where the topographic profile should be placed. The aim was to include as many well-known landmarks as possible while giving a reasonably accurate representation of the topography of the state. A line oriented roughly east-west was preferred as it would cut across the greatest variety of physiographic regions. It would also follow the natural shape of the state and correspond with the reader's inclination to view a profile oriented with east on the right. A more than suitable line was found that ran from Metompkin Island, off Accomack County on the east, to Appalachia, near Big Stone Gap in Wise County on the Kentucky border. The advantage of this line is that it intersects the cities of Richmond, Lynchburg, Bedford, Roanoke, Salem, and Norton and the towns of Appomattox and Blacksburg.

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
    Census Regions and Divisions
    Counties (and equivalents)
    Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

The most northerly of the Southern states, Virginia is roughly triangular in shape. The small section of the state that, along with Maryland and Delaware, occupies the Delmarva peninsula between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is separated from the main part of Virginia and is called the Eastern Shore. The coastal plain or tidewater Virginia's shores, mountains, mineral springs, natural wonders, and numerous historic sites draw millions of visitors annually. Crowning the hilltops and river bluffs from the Chesapeake region west to the Blue Ridge and adding to the grace and elegance of the Virginia landscape are the classic Greek revival homes and public buildings with their stately porticoes. Major tourist attractions include Shenandoah National Park ; Colonial Williamsburg; and Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial. Other historic points of interest include Appomattox Court House National Historical Park; Manassas and Richmond national battlefield parks; Booker T. Washington and George Washington Birthplace national monuments; Colonial National Historical Park and Jamestown National Historic Site, both on Jamestown Island; and several national cemeteries and battlefields (see National Parks and Monuments , table).
