Virginia has both rich agricultural history and widely diverse geographical regions (6 major soil associations, 6 distinct climatic zones, 5 general agricultural production areas) which are described below. The Virginia Geographic Information System provides detailed information on soil types, water, and other factors for 70 counties, and is continuing to gather information with the goal of mapping the entire state. This information is available to local government agencies and is used in planning and management of natural resources. Farm lands (approximately 8.7 million acres) support Virginia livestock and agricultural products. Forest lands (15.2 million acres) support important wood-based industries as well as hunting, fishing and other forest recreation. Wetlands comprise approximately 350 thousand acres and are impacted directly by agricultural and forest activities. Agricultural Production Regions

    Virginia Government and Politics Regions of virginia geography of Virginia
    http://www.virginiaplaces.org/government/congdist.html
    @import url(../styles/base.css);
    Congressional Districts and Representatives
    The two Senators serving in the Congress from Virginia represent the entire state. They campaign throughout Virginia every six years for election, and visit nearly all of the state's 95 counties nd many of the cities in the process. All votes in the state count towards the election of a Senator - one vote in Halifax County is as good as one vote in Loudoun County. Candidates spend most of the time campaigning where people are concentrated, but every candidate for Senator will appear in Southwest Virginia occasionally to show their personal interest in the region. However, the 11 members of the House of Representatives represent less than 10% of the state's population. Every two years, they campaign in just their district. You won't see Rep. Bobby Scott campaigning for votes in Charlottesville, or supporters of Rep. Virgil Goode handing out sample ballots at Metro stations in Arlington. Candidates for the House of Representatives may attend fund-raising events across the state (especially in Richmond and Northern Virginia), but the members of the House of Representatives have a narrower focus than members of the Senate. They represent their districts, not the entire state, and it's good politics to focus on issues of concern to their geographical region.
    Think Rep. Goodlatte cares more about the US Department of Agriculture than Rep. Jim Moran? Think Rep. Boucher cares more about burley tobacco than Rep. Frank Wolf? Who in the state's delegation to the US Congress cares the most about Navy contracts for shipbuilding and repairs? [Answer: two Senators, and the members from the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts representing Hampton Roads. In addition, Northern Virginia has many residents serving in the military, especially high-ranking officials at the Pentagon, so those representatives will also want to be perceived by their voters as supporters of a strong Navy.]

    http://www.vaes.vt.edu/about/history.html
    The Virginia General Assembly established the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES) on March 1, 1886, in anticipation of the Federal Hatch Act of 1887. This Act created a nationwide network of state agricultural experiment stations. Every state in the nation has an experiment station as part of the land-grant higher education system. This system links experiment station research to cooperative extension programs and college academic programs. The State Agricultural Experiment Stations (SAES) were charged with conducting research and development projects on behalf of farmers. Subsequent acts, including the Adams Act of 1906, the Purnell Act of 1925, and the Bankhead-Jones Act of 1935, increased federal appropriations to SAES. In 1946, the act authorizing the Regional Research Fund was signed. Today, 25 percent of the annual Hatch appropriation from Congress is earmarked as Multistate Research Funds. In 1962, the McIntire-Stennis Act was enacted to promote forestry research and graduate education. Animal Health and Disease research is a separate line item in the CSREES budget and must be approved by Congress each year. Return to the About VAES page

    West Virginia is well drained; its important rivers include the Tug Fork, the Big Sandy River, the New River, the Kanawha, the Little Kanawha, the Cheat, and the Monongahela, all of which find their way to the Ohio. The New River and the Kanawha combine to form the most important waterway entirely within the state. West Virginia's climate is generally of the humid continental type, with hot summers (except in the highest areas) and cool to cold winters. West Virginia's natural beauty is spectacular, and the excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing offered here form the basis of a growing tourist industry. The state has numerous state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest (most of which is in Virginia) are in West Virginia. Mineral springs are scattered throughout the state, notably at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and White Sulphur Springs. Other tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (see National Parks and Monuments , table) and various mounds built by ancient peoples, most notably Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nation's largest.

On-line Resources Geography as a Discipline "Geography is the study of spatial aspects of human existence. . . . Geography has much more to do with asking questions and solving problems than it does with rote memorization of isolated facts.
    [It] is an integrative discipline that brings together the physical and human dimensions of the world in the study of people, places, and environments. Its subject matter is the Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, the relationships between people and environments, and the connections between people and places.
