Information on viewing the manuals:
The manuals below are in PDF format. You need the Acrobat viewer to view these PDF files. Click here for information on getting and installing the free Acrobat Reader In addition, once you have downloaded the Reader and opened the manual files, there is a button on the Adobe Reader toolbar called the "Show/Hide Navigation Pane" button. This button allows you to see the bookmarks provided for easier navigation within these files. Clicking on the various bookmarks will take you directly to the specific section that you need. The bookmarks are especially helpful in the instances where the online page numbers differ from the actual hard copy version of the manual, as a result of the conversion. The easiest way to find the button, which looks like a square computer screen with two columns (one empty and one with content), is to move your mouse slowly over the buttons on the toolbar so that the names of the buttons are revealed. Once you find the "Show/Hide Navigation Pane" button, click on it to see the screen divide as the bookmarks appear down the left side. Clicking on the button again will remove the bookmarks from the screen.

Parent/Teacher Resource Center

Our mission at the Parent/Teacher Resource Center is to serve as a liaison between home and school. Our goal is to assist all parents to participate more fully and effectively in their children's educational development, as well as to support all teachers in gaining knowledge on specific disabilities and other topics. The staff at the Center is composed of a special/regular education teacher and a parent with children receiving special and regular education services. Together, the staff seeks to support families and teachers in their efforts to:
  • build a positive working relationship between home and school; understand the laws and responsibilities related to educating children; communicate effectively for the individual needs of children and develop and maintain needed supports within the community.
Parents and teachers may visit the Parent/Teacher Resource Center to obtain a variety of useful materials to aide in working with students.

Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Handicapped and Gifted Children Reston VA. What is the Importance of Life Skills? What are Life Skills? Life skills include a wide range of knowledge and skill interactions believed to be essential for adult independent living (Brolin, 1989). At present, many students with handicaps have special needs that are not being met. These students require education and support to learn these necessary behaviors. They must be able to dress and groom properly, use appropriate table manners, make decisions about money, and use transportation to get to work. The three major skill areas that need to be addressed are daily living, personal/social, and occupational skills. What are Daily Living Skills? Many students with disabilities will marry and raise families. The majority will probably earn modest salaries; therefore, it is crucial that they learn how to manage a home, family, and finances as effectively as possible. Some states require that these skills be taught to students with special needs. Instructional responsibility lies with special educators, regular educators, parents, and peers. The following skills are some that have been identified as essential for independent adult living (Brolin, 1989):
