To Guide Entry
The primary objective of this unit is to sensitize both students and teachers to special education students and their needs and their rights. Many regular education students and teachers have had limited contact with special education students. They have very little understanding of the various handicaps of children with special needs. The information and activities in this unit will help Non-handicapped students get past their misconceptions and misunderstandings about children with handicaps. Teachers must help their students to understand and accept their peers with special needs. Teaching students about the various disabilities the other students have will foster an understanding of students with special needs. It is ignorance about disabilities and handicaps that breeds fear. Through education, non-handicapped students will learn to respect and understand the handicapped students as individuals. The second objective of this unit is to help the mainstreamed child with special needs to feel comfortable, accepted and confident in his or her classroom.

Virginia School Deaf/Blind: What to Do?
Today's Washington Post Metro section has a front-page article on the challenge concerning the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind . Enrollment is declining, there are two campuses, what to do....close one or the other, close both and build a new school? The choice is not an easy one, as you will see from reading the article. And this is a choice that more schools for the deaf may face as enrollments continue to decline due to increased mainstreaming and center programs. But we still need the schools..to meet the special needs of the more severely disabled, and/or those who do not thrive in the mainstream or center programs. What do you think would be the best choice? Talk about it on the forum under Parenting and Education. Here is the

Schools for disabled still debated State task force makes a bold suggestion By Hugh Lessig Daily Press Published December 26, 2003 RICHMOND The 2004 General Assembly session offers the chance to end a debate that has dragged on since 1979: whether Virginia needs separate schools in Hampton and Staunton for special-needs kids. A state task force has recommended, by a slim margin, closing both schools and building a new school elsewhere. It makes the most educational and economic sense, members said. It also might be the most politically hazardous. Expect an uphill battle for this proposal when lawmakers get down to business next month. Historically, lawmakers in Hampton and Staunton have resisted efforts to close either campus. The issue has become more complicated as the two schools evolved to serve different types of students. The Staunton school handles traditional deaf and/or blind students. The Hampton school serves more complex needs - children with multiple disabilities such as cerebral palsy who may also be blind or deaf. Some say both schools should remain open but downsized so each can focus on its particular population. One key senator thinks the General Assembly may still embrace that idea.

Virginia Bovell says Charles Clarke deserves praise, but changing the lives of children will depend on the chancellor, too
Tuesday February 10, 2004
The Guardian

This could be Charles Clarke's finest hour. He is presiding over the most sweeping, comprehensive and long-term programme affecting children with special educational needs (SEN) in his lifetime. Nearly one in six children has SEN. For parents, the struggle to access appropriate education for their children is often overwhelming and becomes the only thing that matters. For the young people, an inappropriate educational placement can be disastrous. Politicians and local education authority officers, professionals and parents of children without SEN have all been guilty of speaking as if SEN provision is some kind of a cosy add-on. It is not. Recently I heard of an attempted suicide by a schoolboy with Asperger's syndrome and of the loss of two lives (parent and young disabled child) - all casualties of the struggle for appropriate education for children with SEN.
