Claude Moore Park: Lanesville Heritage Area
Within the Lanesville Heritage Area are Vestal’s Gap Road, the Lanesville House, the Schoolhouse, Frogshackle Nature Center, barns, an outhouse, Tenant House, and Civil War Signal Station site. Vestal’s Gap Road, long used by American Indians, opened to colonists after 1722 when the Iroquois signed a treaty that opened the Piedmont of northern Virginia to European settlement. From the 1720s through the 1820s, Vestal’s Gap Road served as a principal overland route from northern Virginia through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Vestal’s Gap to Ohio and points westward. Planters traveled the road to transport tobacco to the port at Alexandria.
Vestal's Gap Road When the Leesburg Turnpike was completed in 1825, the road was superceded as a major thoroughfare. Vestal’s Gap Road also served as a byway for troops in the French and Indian War. In 1770, George Washington traveled to Ohio via Vestal’s Gap to locate bounty land for officers who had served under him in the war with France.

need to be lonely, as all of the students of the boarding school were being sent to a Fair, at which the School would be competing with other schools in races
http://www.jbuff.com/droozy/boarding_school.htm
Droozy was sent to boarding school at age nine. This was a Jewish Day School since Jewish children were not permitted to attend the local public schools any more in Germany. “You nasty brat, even here you had to follow me and spoil my fun.” The grating shrill voice of sister was like music to Droozy’s lonely heart, and she exhaustedly fell asleep. The next day Fanny guided Droozy to the school principal to tell him that Droozy wanted to be sent home at once because of her intense loneliness. The principal comforted her and advised that there was no need to be lonely, as all of the students of the boarding school were being sent to a Fair, at which the School would be competing with other schools in races and games. This sounded very exciting and temporarily Droozy rejoiced. At least she would have the opportunity to ride with Fanny on the train to Stuttgart where the competition was to take place. When the children arrived at their destination, they were separated and placed with various families who were to be hosts for the three day Fair period. Although Droozy repeatedly telephoned sister Fanny, she eventually got used to her temporary quarters, since Susie, the hostess’ child, shared a room with her and talked with her for hours. At the Fair Droozy ran many races, hopped in a sack with her feet tied and ate nineteen bananas within a few minutes, becoming the banana eating champion of the day. The three days passed quickly and it was time to return to boarding school. Droozy waved farewell to her newly found friend and ascended the train which was headed for Niederstetten. The train was to pass through various small towns along the way, one of them being Droozy’s. When it slowed down in Crailsheim, Droozy hurriedly jumped off, leaving her suitcase behind. She ran all the way to her parents home. What a happy sight it was to see her parents and her brother again, never to return to the boarding school again!

Class of 1996 August 2002
Dear Class of 1996:
Since the spring of our graduation from Lynchburg, I focused much of my early career in the area of educational administration. I packed my car the day after graduation and drove to Kingston, Pennsylvania where I worked with an English as a Second Language program for students from Thailand, helping them to hone their English speaking skills and preparing them for entrance into domestic private boarding and day schools. That fall of 1996, I joined the faculty of Christchurch School in Christchurch, Virginia, serving as the Assistant Director of Admissions and a Development Representative. August 1998 brought about a big move for me from the protected grounds of a premier Virginia boarding school to the chaotic rat race of Northern Virginia. I accepted a job as the Director of Admissions at Highland School in Warrenton, Virginia and spent two phenomenal years there and also coached the women's tennis team.

Kite boarding (aka Kite Surfing, Kite Sailing) is a cross between wake boarding, flying a kite, hang-gliding and windsurfing, taking only the best out of each sport. It is wake boarding on steriods. Ditto that for windsurfing. Kite boarding is windsurfing with lighter, higher performance equipment resulting in extreme performance capabilities. Kite boarding brings together many skills from other extreme sports to create a new phenomenom in the capabilities of watersports. Kite boarding on Key Biscayne is amazing. The wind is perfect, the beaches and launching sites are perfect and the water is perfect. The details are laid out like this... Drive right up to the beach on Virginia Key with your basic necessities cooling down in your ice chest, change your clothes (when you are skipping work), and launch your board. For 500' off of the coast, you can stand in waist-deep water, so there are plenty of places, miles in fact, that if you miss getting started, it is an easy try again. Now for the wind. The entire first week of March has been sustained winds of 20 miles per hour. Gusts will give you some serious hang time. If you are into that kind of thing.

Most Foreign Service parents still expect their children to live at home until college. This is not always possible, because a number of posts lack adequate high schools and sometimes even junior high or elementary school facilities. In a typical year, approximately 450 Foreign Service children attend 150 boarding schools in the United States and abroad. Because the boarding school option means early separation from parents, it is very important that the child be actively included in the decision-making process. Parents considering assignment to a post with inadequate schooling should consider the following advantages and disadvantages of a boarding school. ADVANTAGES OF A BOARDING SCHOOL EDUCATION

So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste?
For students who yearn to perform, in theater, dance or music, these are schools worth knowing about.
So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste? For any parent overseas, distance can make it difficult to find the right American school for a child. For those whose kids seem destined for the performing arts, the task is doubly hard: Auditions and school visits can be impossible to arrange. To ease this task, FSJ has researched some highly regarded performing arts schools public and private that you may want to consider. That's not to say that a youngster with a strong desire to play music, sing, act or dance necessarily needs a specialized school. For example, Katie Buck, who grew up in the Foreign Service and who graduated in 1999 as a theater major from Wesleyan University, attended Sidwell Friends School, a highly regarded, and nonspecialized, private secondary school. Buck says, "I don't at all regret going to that school, though I wish I'd taken more acting classes. But at that point I wasn't sure I wanted to narrow myself to the arts." Last year, Buck presented her one-woman play, "I-Site," based on growing up as a "third-culture kid," to the Foreign Service Youth Foundation. She is now living in New York City and working in theater and television. Arguing in favor of a specialized arts school, however, is the limited arts programing that many public schools have nowadays. "When it comes to budget, arts programs are the first to be cut," notes John Mahlmann, executive director of the Music Educators National Conference.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
