Volume IV Issue 5 The Tassle Is Worth The Hassle The Osceola School District's Alternative Programs Department provides educational opportunities to assist students who are potential dropouts to stay in school and to be successful. Many obstacles to high school completion can be overcome by a combination of school, family, community and student efforts working and supporting each other.
Osceola School District's Alternative Programs Campuses include:
Challenger Learning Center - This is a storefront high school completion program for students 16 through 21 years of age who have previously withdrawn from the traditional school system. Upon completing the required coursework, students are awarded a regular high school diploma from their home-zoned school. Students work individually on required courses and must attend a minimum of 15 hours per week. Challenger Learning Center is located at 2220 Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy., Suite 7 (next to Kmart), Kissimmee.
Project Cope - This is a teen parenting program open to students who are pregnant or have children. A full academic curriculum is offered, along with classes in parenting and childbirth. Childcare is provided on-site. The program is located at 1022 Virginia Avenue, St. Cloud.

University of Virginia Medical School
The University of Virginia Medical School offers a course on Complementary Therapies for Health through the Humanities in Medicine Program. This course prepares students to critically examine and understand complementary and alternative medicine through: 1) an exposure to the theoretical and philosophical foundations of complementary and alternative therapies, 2) a review of current research, and 3) an understanding of clinical applications and interventions for healthcare and prevention. The course has limited enrollment and may be available for students from other medical schools. Depending on enrollment the course may also be audited by non-medical participants.

ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Proposals for alternative instructional programs and alternative schools shall be developed by the superintendent or his/her designee and will be submitted to the Board for review and endorsement prior to implementation. Proposals shall include:
1. A statement of justification for the alternative program or school explaining how it will meet the special needs or expectations of the target population and the community;
2. A plan which delineates the proposed organizational structure as it relates to staffing and the scope and structure of the total instructional program;
3. A statement of financial impact identifying all costs, including administration, staffing, equipping, supplying, transportation, support services, and maintaining the program;
4. A statement of related impact explaining how the proposed program will affect and interrelate with other programs and populations served in existing programs and facilities;
5. A statement of authentication verifying that all aspects of the program are in compliance with appropriate federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and there is compliance with all applicable accreditation requirements;
6. If the proposal presents a potential conflict with existing regulations of the State Department of Education, special evidence of authorization from the State Department of Education must accompany the proposal;

The Lee County School System is located in the heart of North Carolina in a community with a population of 47,014. Its location places it just hours from the beautiful beaches and mountains of the Tar Heel State.
