Alternative School Calendars: Smart Idea or Senseless Experiment?
If American students are to compete effectively in a global economy, do they need to spend substantially more time in school? Would increasing the length of the school year or school day raise students' achievement, or would it be more advantageous to alter how we use the time we currently have? Many school systems are experimenting with alternative instructional schedules in an attempt to find out. Included: Year-round schools, later start times, the four-day week, trimesters, and more!

What is the Virginia Beach Central Academy?
The Virginia Beach Central Academy (VBCA) is a secondary alternative high school (grades 9-12) designed to meet the academic, behavioral, and vocational needs of students who have not been successful in the comprehensive high school setting. With small student to teacher ratios, VBCA maximizes the educational development of all students and is committed to developing academic, vocational, and behavioral excellence in its students.
Who can attend the Virginia Beach Central Academy?
The VBCA serves the educational needs of several distinct groups of students. Principals of high schools in Virginia Beach may refer a student directly to the principal of VBCA. These students typically have been identified as "at-risk" and should be at least sixteen years old, have experienced academic failure, and have a history of non-attendance. The Department of School Administration's Office of Student Leadership may place another group of students at VBCA. These placements are usually made due to behavioral concerns and violations of the Code of Student Conduct at the student's home high school. A third group of students may be referred to VBCA's vocational classes as half-day students. These students remain enrolled in their home school but attend VBCA in either a morning or afternoon session to take a vocational class. Students identified as needing special education services will have the opportunity to complete an extensive vocational evaluation at this time to further identify their vocational strengths. Officers of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court may request that students be placed in Virginia Beach Central Academy's computer-based on-line learning lab through the Office of Student Leadership. The Office of Student Leadership may also refer students to the on-line learning lab.

    Information : Alternative Farming Center
The innovative Agriculture Department at Johnson County High School is taking agriculture well into the 21st century. Through its aquaculture farming program, the school has developed an affordable alternative for farmers and entrepreneurs who are in need of making significant changes in their farming methods. The Alternative Farming Center has received national attention and attracted visitors from across the U.S. and overseas to study the innovative methods.
Johnson County High School in Mountain City, Tennessee has developed and instituted a program to introduce aquaculture technology to former tobacco farmers in the local area. As tobacco demands decrease yearly in the less-than-ideal farming conditions of mountainous eastern Tennessee, an alternative to conventional farming techniques is needed. Without such an alternative, many small farms will be lost and the local economy will suffer. Aquaculture offers a low-tech, environmentally friendly, profitable solution to farmers.
At the Alternative Farming Center, students raise tilapia, a warm water edible fish, and koi, a water garden fish, in a 9,000 square foot facility. Water garden plants are grown on top of the water, hanging baskets flourish overhead, and bedding plants are raised on rolling tables over the fish. Hydroponic tomatoes, green peppers, and cucumbers are produced in the raceways, while hydroponic lettuce is also grown directly over the fish. The facility is heated and cooled via a geothermal system that maintains the required temperature of the 90,000-gallon facility. Using this alternative energy source ensures minimum maintenance and operating costs. The closed-loop water circulation system within the facility also eliminates environmental pollution as no discharge of water is required. Water intake to replace lost water due to evaporation is approximately 200 gallons per day.

Alternative School Program Standards The Background: Tennessee Code Annotated Section 49-6-4017(f)(2) requires that "The State Board of Education shall provide a curriculum for alternative schools to ensure students receive specialized attention needed to effectively reform students to prevent them from being repeat offenders." The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. The standards define an alternative school environment with curricula, counseling, and resources to enable the student to master life skills that are critical to social, emotional, and academic growth and success. The standards were developed by a broad-based committee that also developed the service learning curriculum standards. The draft was circulated statewide for comments. ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL PROGRAM STANDARDS The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. MISSION The mission of the Alternative School is to intervene positively with students who currently are not succeeding in a traditional school environment.
