Those who see Caribbean art as something more complex than the traditional and naive approach observe in its artworks the three sources that have strong influence in it: the pre-Colombian Indian, African and European heritage, the latter in consequence of colonization and foreign prevailing cultures. Besides all these aspects, the traces of Eastern minority groups can be found although presenting differences according to the islands where the artwork was originated. We also find in the recent output strong influences from the United States. It is a fact accepted by all that the African origin is a common denominator in Caribbean art, where traces of slavery and African culture can be found. Besides the political aspect of European influence, this pole is also extremely important in modern fine arts as a model to be followed, although exerting its influence with a delay of about 50 years...
However, there has been a renewed focus on native approaches - especially Arawak and Taino - with emphasis on the intellectual level. We are referring to a past which has disappeared; it was nearly completely destroyed in the first 50 years of colonization. An extensive research of their artistic traces is being carried out so as to integrate them in the art being currently produced. This movement has at its basis an ideological process, the search for the retrieval of a persecuted and extinct culture. Besides, these people had attained a significant level in visuality, which is maintained to a certain extent in objects and hieroglyphs, in stones whose essential forms are in complete harmony with Western contemporaneity. This is why we can find in the Caribbean Islands an increasing concern to extend the anonymous Taino patterns and geometry to modern art, which exhibit the artist's personality and his signature.

83. U.S. Virgin Islands: About The Island Of St. John
plantations flourished throughout all three US virgin islands during the dedicate themselves to preserving the island s natural and cultural resources.
http://www.virginisles.com/stjohn.html
Nature a Sure Lure for Visitors to St. John If the characteristic personality of each United States Virgin Island could be captured in a word, the flurry of activity, premier resorts and world-class shopping districts of St. Thomas would likely bring "energetic" to mind. Considering its rolling green hills dotted with centuries-old sugar mill ruins and the Danish-inspired architecture of its two towns, "historic" aptly describes a more quiet St. Croix. But what word does one lend the 11,560 acres of largely undeveloped sparkling beaches, private lagoons, nature trails and lush foilage that both complement these two larger sister islands and complete this beautiful Caribbean trio? It is "serene," and that is the hallmark of the island of St. John. Just a 45-minute boat ride from St. Thomas' Charlotte Amalie, this smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands was once a thriving agricultural society established in the early 1700s by Danish settlers attracted by the island's lucrative prospects of cultivating sugar cane. More than 100 cotton and sugar plantations flourished throughout all three U.S. Virgin Islands during the 18th and 19th centuries, but the emancipation of slaves in 1848 led to the plantations' eventual decline. What remain are the ruins of St. John's now-famous Annaberg Sugar Mill and other smaller plantations. Once known for its sugar cane and farming industries, St. John today is recognized for its pristine beaches and conservation-minded residents who dedicate themselves to preserving the island's natural and cultural resources. Diminutive in size but not in natural splendor, this 19-square-mile island offers a glimpse of what life is like unfrettered by commercial development and the trappings of a more modern lifestyle. Since philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller deeded two-thirds of the island - plus 5,000 offshore acres - to the federal government as national park land more than 40 years ago, St. John has retained a tranquil, unspoiled beauty that leaves visitors vowing to return for a longer stay.

National Park
Challenges of the Future for
Virgin Islands National Park
Carrying Capacities. One of the greatest challenges facing our National Parks is deciding how to provide for quality enjoyment of increasingly large numbers of visitors while preserving the fragile ecosystems within the Park, such as the coral reefs and tropical forests of Virgin Islands National Park. Like other national parks where visitation is on the rise, Virgin Islands National Park may need to set "carrying capacities." Doing so enables a park to preserve its natural and cultural resources - a mandate from the U.S. Department of the Interior - by limiting the numbers of visitors and/or vehicles within an area at a given time. Carrying capacities can be examined in terms of "social carrying capacities." -How many visitors can occupy a beach or hiking trail before it is no longer fun?- and resource carrying capacities -How many visitors can occupy a beach or snorkel in its waters before it is no longer a quality experience?. Carrying capacities are determined by identifying limits of acceptable change. How much change - or resource damage - is acceptable, while still allowing visitors to enjoy a destination? With visitation to Virgin Islands National Park already at one million each year, that number is exected to increase dramatically as the "mega class" cruise ships bring as many as 3,000 passengers to the Park at one time. It is expected that within two years the smaller cruise ships will be supplanted with the newer "eagle class" of ship that can carry up to 4,000 passengers - doubling the regular population of St. John during a single cruise ship visit. In three years, it is further expected that the Havensight dock on St. Thomas will have the capacity to dock enough cruise ships to offload 20,000 visitors onto St. Thomas, again increasing possible visitation to the Park.

    USVI Job Opportunities
Getting A Job! In truth, there are usually jobs of all types available in the USVI but it can be said in general that the pay scales will be below what you will expect on the mainland. It is also true that getting a job in the Virgin Islands is a completely different task than using the approach one would use on the mainland. There are certain professions, such as teachers and nursing that is just continually in demand in the islands but there are challenges in these fields that need to be carefully studied. Other professions are available but it is most often difficult getting a line on these jobs unless you have the appropriate approach. In seeking any of these jobs one must be prepared for the cultural differences you will encounter. With your Island News subscriber kit you will be furnished a data sheet on the art of getting a job in the U.S. Virgin Islands, plus we keep our readers briefed on changes in the economy of the islands on an ongoing basis. Many times our subscribers are lead to work opportunities just through the information that comes as part of each issue of the publication.
