If you want a sample of the virgin islands culture then plan to arrive at Lillian s Guest House on schedule for St. John Saturday
http://www.islands.vi/~cdavis/
Native Recipes History Lingo Watersports ... Historic Sites The view from Lillian's Guest House.
This great location means you don't have to rent a car. Lillian's St. John Guest House, U.S. Virgin Islands Lillian's Guest House is a modernized Virgin Islands home with "Old Time" practicality. Lillian's was built years ago by a local builder so that the windows and doors aligned one another to capture our gentle Caribbean breeze. Currently the guest house is only available for long term rentals.
Lillian's preserves our West Indian charm and you will appreciate its sturdy presence as you approach from the bay. There's a southern view of Cruz Bay harbor from Lillian's deck where you can watch the ships lazily cross the Pillsbury Sound. Lillian's St. John Guest House offers private accommodations and accessibility to some of St. John's best restaurants and most popular night clubs. There aren't any spas, or programmed activities here at Lillian's. You are free to enjoy the spontaneity this lovely Caribbean island offers. Restless guests can find lots of things to do from snorkeling, diving, yachting, sailing, swimming, or just building sand castles in the setting sun. St. John's pristine waters are world renowned. If you enjoy sports, walk to the local tennis, or basketball court, or just walk, as many visitors do, enjoying St. John's fresh morning air. Do you like soccer, or baseball? Local leagues provide lots of excitement at the nearby Winston Wells ball field.

Culture and Style From our West Indian Quadrille dancers to our electrifying carnival celebrations, the roots of the Virgin Island's culture are deeply imbedded in the spirit of her people. Beyond the sun, sand and sea, the beauty of the people is what makes the islands different from any other place on earth. Just who are the Virgin Islander? Indeed a melting pot, they hail from all over the world. They fall mainly into four groups: the African descendants, the French, who have emigrated from French islands, Puerto Ricans, Africans and the "continental" transplants from the U.S. Also living here are many "down islanders" from the southern islands of the Antillean chain and a sizeable number of East Indians. The following touches on just a few aspects of the West Indian culture. Carnival is the island's most eagerly awaited event. Just the mere thought of it, makes islanders walk a little lighter and smile a little more. Each of the islands has its own celebration. St. Croix's is in December, St. John's is over July 4th and St. Thomas' is in April. An elaborate festival, Carnival dates back to when Africans first arrived on the islands. Today, there are colorful parades, costumed revelers, fabulous floats, stilt walking mocko jumbies, food fairs filled with West Indian dishes, all-night partying, calypso music and steep pan competitionns, beauty pageants and more. Mocko Jumbie , the traditional symbol of Carnival, is the "elevated spirit" on 10 to 20 foot stilts, dressed in bright colors that you see throughout the parade. The mocko jumbie origins are deeply embedded in the traditions of West Africa.

Local foods in the Virgin Islands include an assortment of Caribbean dishes. It is common to find American dishes, restaurants with various cuisines and fast food restaurants in the Virgin Islands. Drinks
Rum, rum and more rum! Throughout the Caribbean, every major island has its own varieties of rum. Rum is distilled directly from sugar cane or molasses. As such rum was originally manufactured along side sugar on sugar plantations in the Caribbean. Today the Virgin Islands are well known for Cruzan Rum, manufactured on St. Croix. There are a number of popular health and fruit drinks common to the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. Seamoss is a popular drink made of seaweed that is boiled until it dissolves and then mixed with milk and spices. Mauby is made by boiling mauby bark with spices including cinnamon and is a local favorite. Other favorites include; passionfruit juice, pumpkin punch, sorrel, soursop punch, banana punch, coconut water, peanut punch, bush tea and lemon tea among others.
