Caribbean and American, that is a description of culture in the United States Virgin Islands. You will find fast-food restaurants like Subway and McDonalds next to local restaurants serving pates and boiled fish. You will find large grocery stores selling everything from Campbells Soup to Sara-lee pound cakes. Around the corner from the grocery store will be a fisherman selling a fresh catch from his truck. On the radio you can hear calypso music, reggae, American pop, salsa, blues, oldies, rock and roll and many other genres. Florida oranges and strawberries are sold as are kenips, mangos and coconuts. Fashions include jeans, t-shirts, jerseys, polo shirts and other Western style dress. Local sports enthusiast watch and play baseball, basketball and football. And CNN news is broadcasted daily and discussed just as often as local gossip. Together the American and Caribbean combination makes the United States Virgin Islands a unique and interesting place.

British Virgin Islands
Culture
No trace remains of the islands' original Indian population; today's inhabitants are mostly descended from slaves or slave owners. The hybrid Caribbean culture is evident in the food, in the music and in the handmade sloops that many locals use for fishing. Islanders reflect a mixture of British and West Indian influences when playing their dashing style of cricket and when they wash down a plate of conch fritters with a pint of ale. Virgin Islanders are suckers for a beat. Fungi bands play scratch instruments such as gourds and washboards and sing songs that often comment on local social and political issues. Calypso, known originally as kaiso, was brought here by African slaves and used as a form of communication and rebellion. It's still an integral part of the islands' Carnival, which began as a celebration of slave emancipation. A lot of islanders of African descent retain a strong belief in the spirit world: ghosts (jumbis) often get blamed for bad things and credited for good things on the islands. Jumbi stories were an important part of slave culture, used not only as spine-tingling entertainment on moonlit nights, but also as cautionary tales for children. The inspirational antics of Bru Nansi, a wily spidery man who prevailed in adverse circumstances, were an integral part of West African slave culture. Storytelling traditions persist today, though often in more structured settings such as community halls and festival gatherings.

US Virgin Islands
Culture
The US Virgin Islands have a hybrid heritage. There's no trace of the original Indian population; the islands' inhabitants are mostly descended from slaves or from slave owners. The European legacy comes predominantly from the Danes, who owned the islands for over 250 years, plus traces from English and Dutch plantation owners. A French presence stems from the French Huguenots, who came to escape Catholic France in the mid-19th century or arrived when the French owned St Croix. The former have contributed to a community of people referred to as Frenchies who live, predictably, in Frenchtown, just west of Charlotte Amalie. Recent arrivals include a number of American and European expats and a handful of immigrants from nearby Puerto Rico. Today the dominant culture overlaying all these is distinctly American, the result of 80 years of US strategic and commercial interest in the islands. English is the main language on all the islands but it has Creole influences, which means you can say 'mon' with impunity. Puerto Rican emigrants speak Spanish, while some of the Frenchies still speak French. A lot of islanders of African descent retain a strong belief in the spirit world: ghosts ( jumbis ) often get blamed for bad things and credited for good things on the islands. Jumbi stories were an important part of slave culture, used not only as spine-tingling entertainment on moonlit nights but also as cautionary tales for children. The inspirational tales of Bru Nansi, a wily spidery man who prevailed in adverse circumstances, were transported to the Caribbean from West Africa. Storytelling traditions persist today though often in more structured settings such as community halls and festival gatherings.

British Virgin Islands History
Watergoing vessels have long been important to these islands. The original inhabitants - Ciboney, Arawak and Carib Indians - moved among the islands in their oceangoing craft. In 1493 the islands saw the arrival of several larger boats commanded by an explorer in the service of Spain: Christopher Columbus. Shortly thereafter, pirate ships became fond of the islands, drawn by the same secluded coves that today harbor pleasure craft. They continued to make use of them even after Dutch farmers settled on the islands in the mid 1600s.
The British gained control in 1672. They built sugar, cotton and indigo plantations on several of the islands and imported slaves. After slavery was abolished in 1834, the plantation economy came to an end. Most of the landowners abandoned their holdings shortly thereafter, leaving the islands to the former slaves and their descendants. In the 1960s, Laurence Rockefeller's elegant resort on Virgin Gorda, Little Dix Bay, kickstarted the travel industry. The Cary family started its charter yacht company, The Moorings, on Tortola a few years later. Now tourism is the mainstay of the country's economy, although there is a burgeoning banking industry as well.

They are proud and resourceful and have made the transition from a largely rural economy of farming and fishing just a few short decades ago to one of tourism and international finance easily. The people of The British Virgin Islands have their roots in Africa, but their culture is firmly Caribbean. The families of many BVIslanders have been here for generations. Watch Out For Those Sidewalks!
by Vivian Williamson-Bryan Contrary to popular opinion, it is not true that St Thomas's sidewalks are rolled up at 5 pm! It just seems that way. Our nightlife isn't apparent to the casual onlooker - and certainly not to the tourist fresh off the plane (we don't count those ones off the boat - most of those pull out by 6 pm - you'd think they were going to turn into pumpkins or something) - but there is some if you look. Really. Since we don't have the usual collection of TGIFs, bowling alleys, roller skating rinks, amusement parks or that ever popular indoor entertainment complex - the mega mall - just what do we have? Well ... probably as many diversions - if not more - than the average smaller city (and it's no fair comparing us to NYC or DC either!). While not quite the Great White Way, the St Thomas "cultural"/theatre scene is surprisingly robust. Besides the Reichhold performances (big time culture), there are regular performances by the local theatre group, Pistarckle Theatre (their productions are lots of fun - rollicking musicals seem to be a favourite - The Wiz, Nunsense

Culture and History of Tortola: Tortola is one of the islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands. It has Road Town as its capital on the southern shore of the island. The other islands that are associated with the British Virgin Islands are Anegada, Guana Island, Mosquito Island, Peter Island, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. It has constructed a large yacht chartering business, which is able to take people to these islands. Rugged mountain peaks characterize the entire southern coast while the northern coastline contains white sandy beaches. Banana trees, mangos and clusters of palm help adorn the scenery. The inhabitants are mostly descendents from slaves and/or slave owners. There is a mixture of British and West Indian influence in their culture. The hybrid Caribbean culture can be seen in their music, food and the sloops that are made for fishing. Calypso is very much alive there as the sounds are social commentary of the local political and social issues. Fungi bands play scratch instruments such as gourds and washboards. Carnival began in the British Virgin Islands as a celebration of the slave emancipation.
