Glossy Snakes Aparallactinae include some bizarre snakes. The Quill-snouted Snake Xenocalamus spp ) has a head that looks like the nib on a fountain penlong, flattened with tiny eyes. It lives in sandy habitats and has underslung jaws feeding mainly on amphibians. The Centipede-eating snake Aparallactus spp ) is immune to the venom of their prey. These glossy snakes often look very similar to Stiletto Vipers. The Purple Glossy Snake Amblyodipsas spp ) eats mainly blindsnakes but also skinks and amphibians. All Aparallactinae have grooved rear fangs. There are 45 species. The Stiletto Viper (Atractaspidinae) has a unique way of biting its prey. A venomous snake, it has long hinged fangs and is a burrower (hence it is sometimes also called the Mole or Burrowing Viper). In a confined burrow, it strikes by crawling alongside its prey, opening its mouth slightly, shifting the lower jaw away from the prey and stabbing backwards and sideways with one fang. Unlike true vipers, the snake will stab all available prey before swallowing them; it traps rodents in their burrows and eats the whole nest at one time. It also eats other snakes, lizards and amphibians. Additional burrowing features include: a lack of a “neck”; scales which are smooth, shiny; a dark solid colour, some with a white belly; small eyes; short stout tail.

For Goodness Snakes!
Treating and Preventing Venomous Bites
By John Henkel They fascinate. They repel. Some pose a danger. Most are harmless. And whether they are seen as slimy creatures or colorful curiosities, snakes play important environmental roles in the fragile ecosystems of the nation's wildlife areas. People who frequent these wilderness spots, as well as those who camp, hike, picnic, or live in snake-inhabited areas, should be aware of potential dangers posed by venomous snakes. A bite from one of these, in which the snake may inject varying degrees of toxic venom, should always be considered a medical emergency, says the American Red Cross. Every state but Maine, Alaska and Hawaii is home to at least one of 20 domestic poisonous snake species, according to a study in the August 1, 2002, issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

    NORTH CAROLINA VENOMOUS SNAKES
Of the 37 species of snakes throughout North Carolina, only six are venomous:
  • Copperhead (found throughout NC) Canebrake Rattlesnake (found throughout NC) Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (found in southeastern NC) Pigmy Rattlesnake (found in southeastern NC) Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin (found in wetland areas in the eastern half of NC) Coral Snake (the rarest, found in the south and southeastern areas of NC)
  • According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, about 8,000 people a year receive venomous snake bites in the United States, and only 9 to 15 victims die. In fact more people die from wasp and bee stings than from snake bites. The Eastern Coral Snake is a member of the Elapidae family, which includes the deadly cobras of India. It lives in the sand hills of southeastern North Carolina. This rare black, red, and yellow banded snake is shy and seldom seen. It hunts at night and kills its prey with a potent neurotoxin venom. This venom is the most toxic venom produced by any of North Carolina's venomous snakes, but since Coral snakes are secretive, people seldom encounter one. The other species of venomous snakes are known as pit vipers. The five North Carolina pit vipers include two moccasins (the copperhead and cottonmouth) and three rattlesnakes. Pit vipers are recognizable by their large, triangular or diamond shaped head, a pit between the nostril and the eye, and vertically elliptical "cat's eye" pupils. The

Emergency room personnel will know from the type of bite (punctured versus chewed tissue) whether the attacker was a pit viper or coral snake.
    http://www.sawyerproducts.com/Bites_Stings/snake.htm
SNAKE BITES Of the 10,000 - 20,000 snake bites reported in the US each year, less than ten are fatal. However, many more cause disfigurement or nerve or tissue damage. Quick use of the Sawyer Extractor™ Pump to remove the venom can have significant benefits. Treatment of Snake Bites
  • Remove yourself or victim from risk of a second bite.
  • Use the Sawyer Extractor™ Pump immediately. You can leave the pump on for up to four hours. The first few minutes are the most important for venom removal.
  • Calm the patient. Virtually all snakebites are successfully treated in the US.
  • Keep the extremity at heart level or lower. In most cases severe complications DO NOT occur until several hours post-bite. If the victim must be transported or walked out, make wise use of those first few hours.
  • Seek medical help immediately. Children and adults under 120 lbs. are particularly at risk, as is anyone who has received multiple bites or a full load of venom.
  • Limit liquid intake because the body pumps fluids to the bite site, increasing painful swelling. Avoid alcohol, which increases metabolism and impairs judgment.
  • Remember that most bites, even from poisonous snakes, are not fatal. Panic can increase the danger to the victim by inducing rapid heartbeat.
  • 96. Dangerous Critters

    http://mzone.mweb.co.za/residents/net12980/danger.html
In certain forums on the web we find lists purporting to rank the most dangerous and/or venomous snakes in the world. Unfortunately one can take one's pick as there are a number - and none of them agree with each other.
How accurate are they? How long is a piece of string?
The criteria for judging the most dangerous snakes should be simple. In fact only one factor can legitimately be used - human deaths attributed to the specific species. Contributing factors would be the distribution of the species, aggression, venom yield, toxicity of venom, habits of the snakes. Obviously a fairly venomous species that is found in vast reaches of the earth will kill more humans than a violently venomous species known to live on only one inaccesible grassy knoll on an uninhabited Patagonian island. However when all is said and done - the only accountable factor MUST be the body count of the species. As to the most venomous we run into similar problems of definition. The effect of snake venom is measured in mouse units. The standard test is to measure how many standard sized mice a given weight/volume of venom will kill. From there an estimation and extrapolation is made to a standard 70 kg human male.

In Europe we are mostly concerned with the viper. Of an average size of 50 to 60 cm with a triangular head, the viper is stocky, brown or grey, with a zigzag black dorsal marking. Their life cycle is mainly from May to September, from feeding and molting to reproduction. They hibernate in winter by burying themselves to varying depths.
Vipers are not agressive but will attack if they feel threatened. Most bites happen in the summer during the warm hours between 11am and 3 pm. Their great jaw-opening ability allows them to bite any part of the body. In the middle of nowhere, the

Wagler's Pit Viper is perhaps the most well-known of the various green, arboreal pit vipers to be found in the region. This is a snake of primary forest, mature secondary forest and mangroves. It is active by night; by day it generally lays coiled high in the trees.
The term "pit viper" refers to heat-sensing "pits" which occur on each cheek - these are used to locate prey. As with other pit vipers, this species has haemotoxic venom, meaning it is poisonous to the blood system.
The species can be identified by the triangular head. Juveniles are mainly light green with narrow pale bands, and adults are dark green with thicker yellowish bands.
Wagler's Pit Viper ranges from Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi and the more southerly islands of the Philippines. In Penang, Malaysia this is the species which inhabits the famous Snake Temple. Left : Typical adult patterning (Bukit Timah, Singapore)
