Newsflash!! Coming in January 2004: the long-awaited English-language release of Ludwig Trutnau's Venomous Snakes: Snakes in the Terrarium . This is the single-best venomous husbandry book I've ever seen; indeed, any of Trutnau's books are must-haves that I find myself referring to again and again, no matter how many other books I have. Available now for pre-order from Amazon don't miss out on this one!

The Sand Viper Page
We begin with my favorite among the desert vipers, the impressive little horned viper Cerastes cerastes . Although they've got a lot of immitators, no other snake looks quite so dramatic in the horned viper's understated way. With a range throughout north Africa and into Israel and Arabia, this species can burrow rapidly into the sandy substrate of its desert home, leaving only the horns exposed. It feeds on small mammals, lizards, and birds, and hibernates from November to March in the burrows of desert rodents. Reproduction is by means of eggs. I once knew one of these animals to refuse food for over a year, and then he picked up as though nothing were amiss. The lovely little sand-devil Cerastes is a true tenacious dweller of the empty lands.

Texas Poisonous (Venomous) Snakes
Snakes! Sneaky, slimy, scary?...OR...Streamlined, skillful, and simply sensational? Seems like people either love 'em or hate 'em, but either way, snakes play an important role in our world!

About Snakes
Snakes are reptiles. Reptiles are cold-blooded, have skin covered with scales, and lay eggs. (Some snakes don't actually lay their eggs, but hold them inside until they hatch.) Snakes have no legs and no ears. Skilled predators, snakes help maintain the balance of nature by eating prey that reproduces frequently, everything from earthworms to rabbits. Snakes are especially important in the control of rodents such as mice and rats.
Venomous Snakes in Texas
Texas is home to around 115 species and subspecies of snakes. The 15 venomous snakes in Texas make up less than 15 percent of the total number of snakes in the state. They are separated into four categories: coral snakes, copperheads, cottonmouths (water moccasins) and rattlesnakes.
Coral Snakes
Only one species of coral snake is native to Texas. Shy and rarely seen, it has, in order, brilliant red, yellow and black colors. (Other, harmless snakes have similar colors in a different order. The rhyme "red and yellow kill a fellow" has helped many remember that the coral snake's red and yellow colors touch, but the harmless milk snake's red and yellow don't touch.) The coral snake has a small mouth, and is usually non-aggressive. Its bites are dangerous, but extremely rare.

Poisonous Snakes of India Indian (Spectacled) Cobra - Naja naja naja
Distinctive Features:
Medium-sized to large; smooth, shiny scales; wide head and neck; wide black band on underside of neck; distinctive hood marking on top of neck.
Description: The Spectacled Cobra is a smooth-scaled snake with black eyes, wide neck and head and medium body. Colouring varies form black or dark brown to yellowish white. The underside is usually white or yellowish with a wide dark neck band. The body is generally covered with a speckled white or yellow pattern, sometimes forming ragged bands. The famous hood marking of the classic design, shows a connected pair of rings. Occasionally, it may not even resemble spectacles, or may be altogether absent. The cobras of northwest India are blackish and have a barely distinguishable hood marking. Cobras are often confused with the Indian rat snakes, which have a much thinner neck and head, and become 3 metres long, a metre more than do the biggest Indian cobras.
The Spectacled Cobra is the most widely distributed of the generally accepted 3 sub -species of cobras in Indian and is one of the big four dangerous snakes, 6 species of cobras occur in Asia and 9 in Africa. The jet black cobras occur in Asia and 9 in Africa. The jet black cobra of northwest India and Pakistan is another sub-species or geographic race. Except for its colour and absence of hood marking, it is very similar to the spectacled Cobra.

Who would support a national venomous reptile permitting system? Does the current “state by state” system really make sense? Take for example the City of Bristol. On the right side of the street, the residents can not keep any type of venomous reptiles, regardless of their qualifications. Does the 15 feet that separates the streets make that much difference? ommon viper reaches 80 cm. It is the thick snake with a thin short tail (about 1/10 of a body). The head has the characteristic triangular form and is different from a body appreciablly. The colouring of common vipers is very variable; there are silvery, sky-bluish, grey, copper-coloured, brown, black. There is characteristic dark zigzag figure along spine (naturally, imperceptible at black specimen). Occasionally there are specimens without such figure or with cross dark strips. It is interesting, that at such variability of colouring anybody never met a viper-albino. There is V- (Vipera) or X-shape figure on a head; black strip passes through an eye sideways head.

The nuerotoxic bite is dangerous and there is no anti venom in Jakarta. Blue Temple viper. A tree snake whose bite is haematotoxic and indeed very dangerous.
    http://www.expat.or.id/medical/poisonoussnakes.html
Home Practical Information Health and Medical Concerns
There are approximately 450 species of snakes in Indonesia. Only five or so are considered dangerously poisonous and found around Jakarta like any wild animal, the snake will usually try to escape before it will attack. They can usually be depended on to bite if they are stepped on. Most are nocturnal and can be avoided by not walking barefoot at night in dark, swampy, bushy areas. Keeping one's garden clear of thick vegetation, tall grass, and dark rocky hideaways helps dissuade snakes from making one's house or yard a snake's hideaway. It is hoped that these illustrations will assist in identification of those species which are venomous. Indonesians often wrongly identify snakes and usually say that ALL are poisonous. A snake which cannot be positively identified SHOULD be considered dangerous.
    Snake bite treatment
It is important to distinguish between snakebite and snake poisoning. The bite from a harmless snake can produce mild pain and extreme fear. A bite from a venomous snake may not necessarily mean that venom has been injected into the wound. If someone has received a bite, check for symptoms of poisoning, keep the victim calm and treat for shock, and keep the site of the bite lower than the heart, and immobile. DO NOT ADMINISTER ALCOHOL. (4 April 1983, Washington, DC) Louis's penchant for snakes drove him to break into the National Zoo and purloin two Gaboon vipers. These vipers are large, aggressive, ill tempered, and one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Even so, they are normally sedentary. This particular pair of vipers was quite docile until Louis put them in a trash bag and boarded a nice, warm city bus. When the snakes warmed up, they tried to escape from their undesirable new accommodations in Louis's plastic bag. That's when our 16-year-old herpetologist was bitten. He landed in the hospital, where antivenin serum was administered until he regained his senses. The purloined vipers were taken to the basement of the zoo's reptile house, where they were held for a week of stress-free observation. The human involved was released to live a bleak, Gaboon-free life. SIDEBAR: "Gaboon Vipers are a family of snakes comprising three subfamilies: the mountain viper (Azemiopinae), true vipers (Viperinae), and pit vipers (Crotalinae). They are widespread throughout the world. Their venoms act on the blood (hemotoxic) as compared to the venom of elapids (cobras and adders) that acts on the nervous system (neurotoxic). -Introduction to Herpetology, 3rd ed., Goin, Goin, and Zug, pp333-36.
