Recognizing a Venomous Bite
All poisonous snakes have 2 large fangs which are located in the upper front portion of the mouth. If the victim is bitten and the snake escapes before the identification can be made, the following signs should be noted:
  • One to two punctures made by the hollow fangs. Pain following within 5 to 10 minutes accompanied by swelling and discoloration around the bite area. These symptoms will progress up the victim's extremity. If the fang enters a vein or artery, these symptoms may not be present. Coral Snake bites differ from Pit Viper bites. Their venom is neurotoxic in nature. The bite is usually not painful, little or no swelling or discoloration is present. Symptoms may be delayed for several hours but when they do occur, they progress rapidly. Symptoms include nausea, drowsiness, vomiting, marked salivation and difficulty in breathing. Paralysis is also noted in Coral Snake invenomation.

Deadly Viper Venom Used To Make New Vodka
Herpetologist Say Drink Depends On Snake
POSTED: 1:53 p.m. EST February 26, 2003
UPDATED: 2:29 p.m. EST February 26, 2003
A group of Russian herpetologists are releasing a new brand of vodka made with the deadly venom of viper snakes, according to a Local 6 News report. Regular snake vodka usually involves stuffing a dead snake into a bottle of vodka. However, herpetologists at the Novosibirsk Herpetology Centre plan to take the drink a step further, diluting some of the purest venom from wild vipers collected in the wilderness of Siberia into pure vodka. They have already been working on the idea for almost 6 years, and will soon receive their patent, according to the report. The group plans to mass produce the vodka and bring in revenue for their center which, like much of the post-Soviet scientific community, has faced a tight funding crisis. Successful sales would allow the centre, which has previously used most all of the 2 kilograms of condensed venom that it produces each year for medicinal purposes, to expand their collection from 800 vipers to a maximum capacity of 8,000, meaning more venom, medicine, and vodka.

About 45,000 people are bitten by snakes every year in the United States. Of those, 7,000 involve poisonous snakes, and of those treated, only about 15 die. More than half of the poisonous snakebites involve children, and most occur between April and October. Of the poisonous bites in the United States, 55 percent are from rattlesnakes, 34 percent from copperheads, 10 percent from water moccasins, and onepercent from coral snakes. Rattlesnake bites account for 70 percent of the fatalities and between 95 and 98 percent of the bites occur on extremities. Each year the Samaritan Regional Poison Center has more than 65 calls about rattlesnake bites. There are 11 species of rattlesnakes identified in Arizona. A pit viper snake has a heat sensing "pit" located between the nostril and eye on each side that is used to locate and trail prey. Rattlesnakes can grow up to six feet in length. Baby rattlesnakes are capable of a venomous bite from birth. Nonpoisonous snakebites are not considered serious and are generally treated as minor wounds; only poisonous snakebites are considered medical emergencies. Symptoms generally occur immediately, but only about one third of all bites manifest symptoms. When no symptoms occur, probably no venom was injected into the victim. In 50 percent of coral snake bites, no venom is injected because the coral snake has to chew the skin for envenomation to occur. In as many as 25 percent of all venomous pit viper bites, no venom is injected, possibly because the fangs may be injured, the venom sacs may be empty at the time of the bite, or the snake may not use the fangs when it strikes. Poisonous snakebite venom contains some of the most complex toxins known; venoms can affect the central nervous system, brain, heart, kidneys, and blood.

New Frontiers for Color: Non-spectral Colors
Infrared and magenta exist beyond the visible rainbow of colors. In this article, a scientist explains how they might be the key to a new generation of x-rays and much more. First, some introductory information: About Infrared and Non-spectral Colors
(colors that are not in the visible rainbow)
Everyone has felt the heat from an oven - or even the heat of another human body. Is someone feeling sick? Put your hand on their forehead to see if they're really heating up and running a temperature. That heat is a measurable form of radiation known as infrared. You may also be familiar with infrared photography that creates a picture based on the heat emitted by a tree or any object.
Infra-red is a non-visible "color" that exists outside of the visible colors of the electro-magnetic spectrum. We can feel it , but most of us can't see it. (See the chart at Color Matters.)

Viper venom protein stops spread of tumors
V iper snakes can kill, but a protein in their venom prevents the spread of tumors in laboratory mice, and a molecular 'portrait' now under development may explain why, according to a UD scientist profiled in a recent issue of Cardiology Today and the current Business Week. Venom from Macmahon's Viper ( Eristocophis macmahoni ), found in Afghanistan and Pakistan, contains the protein, eristostatin, which blocks the "metastasis" or spread of tumors in mice injected with cancer cells, Mary Ann McLane, medical technology, said. Her studies of eristostatin's structure, though preliminary, could help pharmaceutical companies develop cancer-fighting drugs, said McLane's collaborator, Stefan Niewiarowski of Temple University Medical School's Department of Physiology and Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center. "The next step," McLane said, "is to find out exactly what it is about the structure of eristostatin that gives it this exciting capability in mice." With UD colleague Mary E. Miele, medical technology, McLane also plans to study eristostatin's effect on metastatic melanoma cells. Eristostatin is one of many viper-venom "disintegrins"- proteins that interact with a family of cellular receptors called integrins, McLane explained. Disintegrins are "potent inhibitors of platelet aggregation and cell adhesion," and therefore prevent an early step in blood clotting, Niewiarowski said. Once injected into a victim's bloodstream, disintegrins from viper-snake venom stop the sticky protein, fibrinogen, from binding with platelets. The global quest to better understand disintegrins, launched in the late 1980s, already has resulted in a commercially available anti-platelet drug, based on a synthetic version of these proteins' "three-dimensional scaffolding," McLane noted.

Snakes are legless reptiles, some of which have a venomous bite which they use to kill their prey before eating it. Other snakes kill their prey by constriction, for example strangulation. An old synonym for snake is serpent; in modern usage this usually refers to a mythic or symbolic snake, and in Wikipedia information about such creatures will be found under serpent. The present article deals with the biology of snakes. Snakes are closely related to lizards, which share the order Squamata. There are also several species of legless lizard which superficially resemble snakes, but are not otherwise related to them. Although they may be venomous and have a bad reputation, snakes do not prey on humans. Most snakes will attack a human being only if startled or injured. If you look where you are walking and make plenty of noise, a snake will get out of your way rather than waiting for you to step on it. In many areas, most snakes are non-venomous or have venom that is not harmful to humans, and are Colubrid. Australia is an exception - most snakes in Australia are extremely venomous and should be given a very wide berth. All snakes are carnivorous, eating small animals, birds or insects. Snakes do not chew their food. Snakes have very flexible lower jaws, the two halves of which are not rigidly attached, allowing them to open their mouths wide enough to swallow their prey whole, even if it is larger in diameter than the snake itself. Contrary to the popular myth, at no point do they "unhinge" their jaws (disarticulate their mandibular joints). After eating, snakes become torpid while the process of digestion takes place.

For a man wearing shoes and trousers and living in a camp, the danger of being bitten by a poisonous snake is small compared to the hazards of malaria, cholera, dysentery, or other diseases. Nearly all snakes avoid man if possible. Reportedly, however, a fewthe king cobra of Southeast Asia, the bushmaster and tropical rattlesnake of South America, and the mamba of Africasometimes aggressively attack man, but even these snakes do so only occasionally. Most snakes get out of the way and are seldom seen. However in a wilderness survival situation you need to be prepared for anything, and while snake attacks are rare they can be deadly.
