Domestic Violence exists in all quarters of society. This section was created to specifically address domestic violence within Muslim communities. This is not to say that domestic violence is a Muslim problem. A woman is beaten up every 9 seconds in America. See Domestic Violence in the West There are two categories of guilty people:
1. The ones who inflict the physical and mental abuse. In most cases, the father and husband.
2. The ones who try to hide the fact that people belonging to category 1, do exist. These people are men and sadly, women too. It is naive at best and irresponsible at worst, to claim that domestic violence does not exist in our communities. Denying it does not make it go away. When this section first went online, several people complained: "I was a bit mad at that time when Isaw the site that you had. The site could make people believe that Muslims are violent as the western media has deliberately done this against Muslims." (from someone who used the nickname servant of God) Firstly

¡@¡"@Domestic Violence" is no longer an unfamiliar term in our daily life. ¡@¡@Some of us may have witnessed, heard about, or experienced domestic violence, and some of us may play the role as a defender, silent witness, victim, or perpetrator in the incidents caused by domestic violence. The truth is, most of us still regard domestic violence as a " family's business " that outsiders have no right to get involved. Further, the general public tend to take that only abnormal men will abuse their wives, children, and the elders, which has nothing to do with most normal people's life. Such views on the distinction between private and public life prevent "domestic violence" from becoming a public issue. ¡@¡@Ms. Ru-Weng Deng's murder her husband has exposed the darkside of treating domestic violence as a "family's business" to the public. It furthers women's organizations to take part in actions against marital and domestic violence. Today we are glad that the " Domestic Violence Prevention Act " was read for the first time.

The Franklin County Men Against Domestic Violence started meeting in September 2002, and their agenda is ambitious. "We're really focused on action which raises awareness among men of their responsibility for speaking out, taking action and modeling healthy behavior for young people," said Jay, one of the group's organizers. Inspired by similar groups across the state and the country, MADV is supporting NELCWIT's work in several ways - from fundraising - to donating building skills and labor - to community education (they sponsored a speaker, Lundy Bancroft, about why men batter this spring, and have more events planned). The group was strongly focused in its first year on political organizing, as they strategize to have all of the towns in Franklin County declare themselves

Men's Centre Experiences with Domestic Violence
"Domestic violence against men is just not a social problem". Ellen Pence, founder of the Duluth Domestic Abuse Intervention Project. New York Times 20th April 1992.
Male victim faced a wall of disbelief
In 1995, Men's Centre North Shore's first co-ordinator Martin Lewis wrote : [Female violence] is foremost in my mind at the moment as I have been seeking justice for a North Shore solo father who was such a victim recently. The incident involved this man's estranged wife (about 18 months) arriving at his home and physically attacking him and another man (in front of their children), after she learned that he had a new woman in his life. The Police attended and, after talking to her, sent her home. The man's enquiries later found that Police policy had not been adhered to in that the perpetrator of domestic violence was not arrested therefore there was no record of the incident for statistical purposes or for future reference if further incidents occurred. Nor was the man offered any of the victim support normally offered in these circumstances. When assistance was sought for him we were faced with a wall of disbelief and indifference. Several publicly funded and promoted organisations which purport to be working either against domestic violence or in support of its victims were unable to help because he was a man. Responses varied from an indifferent shrug of the shoulders to an offer of an anger management course to outright hostility. How dare anyone suggest that women be anything but the victim and the man the perpetrator. The general impression was that he as a victim must have deserved it. A suggestion, that if made of a woman would be considered outrageous.

Noteworthy Research and Papers on Domestic Violence
Psychological Effects of Partner Abuse against Men : A Neglected Research Area. Psychology of Men and Masculinity Vol 2 (2) July 2001. Although there is a substantial research literature addressing abuse against women and its consequences, the flip side of this issue, physical abuse against men and its consequences, is a less researched area....... There has been almost no research on the consequences of this type of abuse. In this article, we will first review data on the prevalence of violence directed at husbands by wives. Although the exact rate of this abuse is open to debate, we argue that there are enough male victims of violence by their wives to warrant attention to the consequences of that violence. Next, we discuss the scant research that has been done on the consequences of this type of abuse and argue that more rigorous research is needed. Finally, we discuss two areas that have received even less attention: (a) why men stay in abusive relationships and (b) emotional abuse against men and its effects.

Dame Silvia Cartwright, PCNZM, DBE The Governor General of New Zealand Domestic Violence statistics Men's violence against women and children is the most common form of domestic violence in our society. Domestic violence is a major social problem, estimated to cost our nation between 1.187 billion and 5.302 billion dollars per year. Men assaulting their women partners comprise between 86% and 98% of family violence-related arrests. Recent NZ studies found that 35% of men reported physically assaulting their partners, and 33% of women reported physical or sexual abuse from their male partner. In a NZ Department of Justice study, one in five kiwi men admitted assaulting their partners in the last year. The 1996 New Zealand Government Statement on Family Violence recognises that "There are significant links between violence against women and abuse of children. One of the most common contexts of child abuse is a situation where a child's mother is being beaten by her male partner."

IN THE UNITED STATES
MURDER . Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, the euphemism for murders and assaults by husbands and boyfriends. That's approximately 1,400 women a year, according to the FBI. The number of women who have been murdered by their intimate partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. BATTERING . Although only 572,000 reports of assault by intimates are officially reported to federal officials each year, the most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor's attention. SEXUAL ASSAULT . Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once. THE TARGETS . Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate. Young women, women who are separated, divorced or single, low- income women and African-American women are disproportionately victims of assault and rape. Domestic violence rates are five times higher among families below poverty levels, and severe spouse abuse is twice as likely to be committed by unemployed men as by those working full time. Violent attacks on lesbians and gay men have become two to three times more common than they were prior to 1988.

Understanding Domestic Violence Factoids
According to the FBI, A Woman is Beaten Every (fill in the blank) SECONDS First, the FBI does not calculate, tabulate, or track data on domestic violence. The FBI once did estimate that a women is beaten every 15 seconds, but they derived this estimate from Murray Straus, Richard J. Gelles, and Suzanne K. Steinmetz's book, Behind Closed Doors: Violence in the American Family. Various other fact sheets list various other number of seconds. The number of seconds depends on the study (if there actually was one) and how violence was defined. For example, some versions of this factoid state that a women is beaten every 9 seconds and cite a study done by the Commonwealth Fund in July, 1993. The Commonwealth Fund study used the same measure as was used by Straus and his colleagues. Unlike Straus and his colleagues who defined "abuse" as acts of violence that were likely to cause and injury, the Commonwealth Fund defined "abuse" as every thing from pushing, shoving, and slapping to using a gun or knife. There Are Four Million Women Beaten and Abused Each Year Same problems as above. The Straus, Gelles, and Steinmetz survey estimated that 2 million women were abused each year by their husbands. Straus and his colleagues speculated that if all the respondents told the truth and if ex-husbands and boyfriends were included, the number could be as high as 4 million. However, no study to date using a representative sample and measuring severe violence, has found more than 2 million abused women each year.
