Coming Soon! Child Sexual Abuse
  • The person most likely to sexually abuse your child is someone you and your child know and trust. Most sexual abusers "groom" children before perpetrating abuse, by picking out the child's weaknesses and capitalizing upon them. The inappropriate behavior is then posed as a special game, a shared secret, teaching about bodies or some other manipulation. http://www.vnh.org/NHB/HW9615ChildSexAbuse.html
  • In most states the penalty for an adult who rapes a child is twenty years plus —UNLESS that adult happens to be related to the child— in which case the maximum sentence could be PROBATION. http://www.careact.org/
  • No child is psychologically prepared to deal with ongoing or intensive sexual stimulation. Even very young children, two or three years old, may sense that the sexual activity is "wrong," but they are unable to stop it. Children are frequently threatened that if they tell anyone, they will be killed or sent away, or their puppy will be killed; or their whole family will breakup. Children subjected to sexual over-stimulation, with or without threats, will develop problems. Those older than five years of age become caught between loyalty to or dependence on the perpetrator, and shame at doing something "wrong." Over time, the child develops low self-esteem, feelings of being worthless or "dirty," and an abnormal view of sexuality.

Domestic violence is an epidemic that is sweeping the nation and can include any or all of the following types of abuse by a parent, child, spouse, or lover. One type of domestic abuse involves hurtful physical acts that include pinching, slapping, beating, kicking, punching, pulling of the hair, and the actual use of weapons. These weapons can include but are not limited to knifes, guns, belts, bats, vehicles, cigarettes or lighters, curling irons, hammers, tire irons or gardening tools. bodyOffer(27566) Another type of abuse is sexual in nature. A few examples of sexual abuse include rape, forced or coerced sexual acts, incest, molestation, fondling, forced viewing or participation of pornography, sexual jokes and even insults concerning the victims sexuality or performance. The hardest abuse to prove is that of a psychological nature. The intentional degradation of self-esteem by insults or belittling conduct as well as excessive limitations or control over another persons behavior, financial freedom, or interaction with others. Domestic violence and abuse knows no boundaries as far as race, religion, age, sex, geographic location, sexual orientation, or financial and social standing.

Although for many it seems hard to believe, men in North American society are being domestically abused by their wives or girlfriends in roughly the same amount as women are abused by their male partners. How often in a day do we North Americans see violence against men, both from other men and from women? Simply watching an hour or two of television will give some idea as to the answer. Violence against men is a common sight, even to the level of it being humorous. It is very common to see a woman strike a man in jest or in frustration or for whatever reason, more often than we would ever see a man strike a woman. In fact, in our mainstream society the only time we see a man strike a woman, be it a slap, punch or push, is when a perpetrator or villain is abusing a woman. However, we often glimpse a woman slapping a man's face for something he said.

John also recognised and alerted the public to the questionable methodology proposed for use in Carmen Lawrence’s $1.3 millionWomen’s Safety Survey that was published in December 1996. ALL MEN ARE BASTARDS Dodgy figures and suspect ideological interpretations give the impression that violence by men against women is rampant says JOHN COOCHEY. The reality is very different. NAOMI WOLFE wrote a best seller, The Beauty Myth , based on the premise that 150,000 American women die of anorexia nervosa each year. The actual figure for 1991 was 54, according to the US National Centre for Health Statistics, These days people will accept even the wildest claims, as long as they make women out to be victims. Particularly if they also put men in a poor light.

By Glenn Sacks Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson was arrested after an altercation with his girlfriend last weekthe latest example of how police often arrest men who have been attacked by their female partners. According to the Associated Press, the Baltimore police concluded that Erickson's girlfriend Lisa Ortiz: initiated the fight by hurling objects; decided to come back twice after Erickson carried her out of the apartment; repeatedly kicked the apartment door; caused Erickson two minor injuries, one of them to his pitching arm; and herself suffered no injuries. Nonetheless the police, who were operating under Maryland's mandatory arrest law, interpreted Erickson's actions as excessive and are charging him with second-degree assault. Ortiz states that Erickson, who did not pursue her either time after carrying her out, "has never been physically abusive toward me, and in no way do I feel threatened or felt fear from Scott."

Ray Blumhorst is a 6-foot-1-inch, 230-pound, decorated combat veteran who served on the USS Valley Forge during the Vietnam War's largest battle, the Tet offensive. Ray Blumhorst is also a battered husband. Today he walks with a limpnot from war wounds but from one of his ex-wife's assaults. Blumhorst recently filed a widely reported sex discrimination lawsuit against 10 Los Angeles County Domestic Violence shelters for refusing to accept male victims. He says his ex-wife attacked him by surprise on numerous occasions, once throwing a heavy book stand at him which damaged his knee and put him on crutches. He notes: "At least in Vietnam I was allowed to defend myself."

Back to Essays page How Many Domestic Violence Awareness Advocates Discriminate Against Women October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month but despite more than twenty years of consciousness raising and programs, in some key areas women are still being discriminated against. What is unusual, is that the discrimination is being supported by many awareness advocates. Twenty years ago, men and women killed their partners in roughly equal numbers, but now far fewer women are killing their male domestic partners. According to a comparison study by Dr. Daniel Nagin a public policy expert at Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, there is a "substantial" difference in the rate of decline. He links this to improved economic circumstances and as importantly, legal advocacy programs for female domestic violence victims. Dr. Nagin told the New York Times (July 28, 1998): "The resources for women seem to be saving the men’s lives." Shouldn’t we at least try to put in place such programs for men, to see if they can be effective in preventing murders of women? Many domestic violence advocates resist this notion. Indeed, most reject any recognition at all for the fact that some women can be violent and controlling in their intimate relationships. The lowest official estimate puts it at 148,000 male victims a year and 838,000 female (National Criminal Victimization Survey-U.S. Justice Dept), while the highest, the National Family Violence Survey-funded by The National Institute of Mental Health-shows 1.8 million female victims and two million male.

GENERAL FACTS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Nearly 2 in 3 female victims of violence were related to or knew their attacker. (Ronet Bachman Ph.D., U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, "Violence Against Women: A National Crime Victimization Survey Report," January 1994, p. iii) Over two-thirds of violent victimizations against women were committed by someone known to them: 31% of female victims reported that the offender was a stranger. Approximately 28% were intimates such as husbands or boyfriends, 35% were acquaintances, and the remaining 5% were other relatives. (In contrast, victimizations by intimates and other relatives accounted for only 5% of all violent victimizations against men. Men were significantly more likely to have been victimized by acquaintances (50%) or strangers (44%) than by intimates or other relatives.) (Ronet Bachman Ph.D., U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, "Violence Against Women: A National Crime Victimization Survey Report," January 1994, p. 1) Almost 6 times as many women victimized by intimates (18%) as those victimized by strangers (3%) did not report their violent victimization to police because they feared reprisal from the offender.
