Men Stopping Violence was founded in 1982 based on the premise that men can work together with women to end men's violence against women. When Men Stopping Violence (MSV) opened its doors, there was little being done to change the behavior of men who battered women. Over the years, MSV's methodology was carefully developed, tested, reviewed, and refined. This careful approach has established Men Stopping Violence as a national leader in the field of ending men's violence against women.
While Men Stopping Violence works with individual men who batter, we are a social change organization. We know that lasting change involves challenging and changing the social norms and institutions that actively or implicitly condone and promote violence against women.

5. What Can Men Do To Help Stop Domestic Violence
Take a vocal stand against domestic violence. men speaking out can have a powerful effect in helping change social norms that support and perpetuate abuse.

What can men do to help stop domestic violence?
Suggestions from the Family Violence Prevention Fund Men can play a crucial role in helping to stop domestic violence. Men are already an integral part of the community that supports and interacts with families dealing with violence. They are the majority of the judges, police officers, and doctors who work with families in crisis. Some men are the neighbors, friends, and family members who support victims by reaching out and lending a hand. And yet, it is sometimes hard for men to join in the fight against family violence. They may believe it is a women's issue, and that they are not supposed to get involved. But family violence is everyone's concern, and there are many opportunities for involving men in making communities safer. Men are critical to violence prevention efforts because men are more likely to listen to other men when it comes to the perpetration of domestic violence, and because fathers have enormous influence over the development of their children. Here are just a few ways men can make a difference:
  • Be role models to other men. Young men are uniquely positioned to reach out to other young men who are violent at home, to let them know, "You need help, and I want to help you. Your behavior is not acceptable."

http://www.oregoncounseling.org/Handouts/DomesticViolenceMen.htm
About Domestic Violence Against Men Revised: March 29, 2004 Domestic Violence Is Against The Law In Oregon Statistics About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men Very little in known about the actual number of men who are in a domestic relationship in which they are abused or treated violently by women. In 100 domestic violence situations approximately 40 cases involve violence by women against men. An estimated 400,000 women per year are abused or treated violently in the United States by their spouse or intimate partner. This means that roughly 300,000 to 400,000 men are treated violently by their wife or girl friend. For more information see www.dvmen.org Why Do We Know So Little About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men There are many reasons why we don't know more about domestic abuse and violence against men. First of all, the incidence of domestic violence reported men appears to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates. In addition, it has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse. The idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report the situation. The dynamic of domestic abuse and violence is also different between men and women. The reasons, purposes and motivations are often very different between sexes. Although the counseling and psychological community have responded to domestic abuse and violence against women, there has been very little investment in resources to address and understand the issues of domestic abuse and violence against men. In most cases, the actual physical damage inflicted by men is so much greater than the actual physical harm inflected by women. The impact of domestic violence is less apparent and less likely to come to the attention of others when men are abused. For example, it is assumed than a man with a bruise or black eye was in a fight with another man or was injured on the job or playing contact sports. Even when men do report domestic abuse and violence, most people are so astonished men usually end up feeling like nobody believes them.

Female Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence Women's Violence Controlling Domestic Violence Against Men Abstract People hit and abuse family members because they can. In today's society, as reflected in TV, movies, law enforcement, courts, and feminist propaganda, women are openly given permission to hit men. Presently 25%-30% of all intimate violence is exclusively female on male. "Primary aggressor" laws usually result in arrest of the male and ignore research showing 50% of domestic assaults are mutual combat. The woman is thus encouraged to abuse her partner further until finally he will take no more. Such provocation of the human male is dangerous. Studies consistently find women use weapons more often in assaults than do men (~80% for women; ~25% for men). Women are significantly more likely to throw an object, slap, kick, bite, or hit with their fist or an object. There is no support in the present data for the hypothesis that women use violence only in self defense. Three common reasons women give for male abuse are: to resolve the argument; to respond to family crisis; and to " stop him bothering me." Male abuse of a woman, requiring self defense, is one of the less-frequently stated reasons by women for their assaults. Our research shows that a gender-balanced approach to domestic violence is essential in order to reduce both the frequency and severity of such incidents for both men and women. Present laws and practices appear to commonly have the opposite effect.

Many "facts" about domestic violence are published in the media. Are they true? Here's an assessment by Dr. Richard Gelles, one of the best-known, and perhaps most controversial, researchers in the area of domestic violence against men and women. ACCORDING TO THE FBI, A WOMEN IS BEATEN EVERY [fill in the blank] SECONDS. First, the FBI does not calculate, tabulate, or track data on domestic violence. The FBI once did estimate that a women is beaten every 15 seconds, but they derived this estimate from Murray Straus, Richard J. Gelles, and Suzanne K. Steinmetz's book, Behind Closed Doors: Violence in the American Family. Various other fact sheets list various other number of seconds. The number of seconds depends on the study (if there actually was one) and how violence was defined. For example, some versions of this factoid state that a women is beaten every 9 seconds and cite a study done by the Commonwealth Fund in July, 1993. The Commonwealth Fund study used the same measure as was used by Straus and his colleagues. Unlike Straus and his colleagues who defined "abuse" as acts of violence that were likely to cause and injury, the Commonwealth Fund defined "abuse" as every thing from pushing, shoving, and slapping to using a gun or knife. THERE ARE FOUR MILLION WOMEN BEATEN AND ABUSED EACH YEAR.

Are you a man who has been affected by sexual violence?
Would you like support from other men who have been affected?
Are you a Dad concerned about your daughters?
Whether you're a survivor of sexual assault or abuse...Or whether the sexual assault or abuse of a mother, sister, girlfriend, or other loved one has affected you... We know the pain, the anger, and the confusion that sexual violence causes. Mainely Men Against Violence and Sexism is here to help men help each other: To end the violence that permeates our culture, and to support one another in that work. We men need to get involved in ending rape, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. We as men perpetrate the vast majority (95%) of the assaults, and yet the topic is usually framed as a "Women's Issue." We want to make it very clear that we men must get involved because we are involved. We are perpetrators, survivors, and friends of survivors, and need to get involved. We have grand-mothers, mothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, wives, girlfriends, daughters, grand daughters and others who have or may become the subject of abuse. This site will show you HOW you can get involved in working to end the violence they are subject to, everyday. MMAVS was formed with the belief that it's up to the "everyday" individual to help end the everyday violence that is ingrained into our culture.

An unaddressed problem
Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of men is something that doesn't get talked about very much. What's worse, when it does get talked about, discussion is almost always limited to the abuse that men do to men. Alot of people are very emotionally and politically invested in believing that violence isn't something that women do, and when the men who have been victims of women try to speak out they frequently encounter negative reactions ranging from outright denial to actual accusations that it's their own fault that they were abused. It's worse when those reactions come from self-identified feminists, who should just plain know better. There is no excuse for any feminist to deny female abusiveness or to attack any man for discussing their experiences of it. Male violence against women is adequately discussed elsewhere, and so I'm devoting some space to talk about this topic, which is not adequately discussed at all.
