82. NOVA Online | The Vikings | Explore A Viking Village
NOVA Online's video tour of a lifelike scale model of Birka, a medieval Viking village that archaeologists excavated near modern-day Stockholm.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/village.html
Explore a Viking Village
Want to "walk" through a real Viking village? The sequences below from the NOVA film "The Vikings" offer a fascinating and unprecedented look at Birka, a medieval Viking village that archeologists recently excavated near modern-day Stockholm. The video clips come from footage that Swedish filmmakers Mikael Agaton and Lars Rengfelt shot of a 1:30 scale model of Birka now housed in the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm. See the various clips to learn more about the model and how it was made and filmed.
You'll need one of the (free) software plugins - QuickTime or RealPlayer - to be able to view the clips. If you already have the software, choose a media format to view a clip. Note: all of the clips are silent.
Construction
QuickTime RealVideo
Swedish Television had its own model builders construct the mini village. Working from the archeologists' maps and sketches, the designers built the model in sections so it could be moved into a film studio. All told, the model took six to eight months to complete.
Archeology
QuickTime RealVideo
The model builders relied on the results of a five-year archeological investigation of Birka that ended in 1995. The fieldwork provided a much clearer idea of the layout of buildings and streets than had been known before, a layout that the model faithfully recreates.

83. Medieval English Urban History
Historical information about English cities and towns in the Middle Ages, with emphasis on medieval boroughs of East Anglia and on political and constitutional history. Includes primary material.
http://www.trytel.com/~tristan/towns/towns.html
The aim of the Medieval English Towns site is to provide historical information about cities and towns in England during the Middle Ages, with particular but not exclusive emphasis on medieval boroughs of East Anglia and on social, political and constitutional history. A growing selection of primary documents (translated into English) relevant to English urban history is included. The image above is an edited version of a line drawing by Mary Houston, based on an illustration in the Luttrell Psalter RECENT PUBLICATION: PERSONAL ENDORSEMENT Those with an interest in church history or in local history will find a valuable research resource in the CD-ROM English Parish Churches. Volume 1: East Anglia South produced by Dr. Philip Lindley and Alex Moseley and issued by Brepols Publishers, as the first in an intended series (the second due out in 2004). Built around a collection of photographs taken by Dr. Donna Chaproniere, showing exterior shots and interior details of some 300 churches, accessible through a range of navigational tools, the CD-ROM also incorporates an excellent set of introductory essays describing the factors involved in the development of Suffolk and the construction and enlargement of parish churches, some of which are among the finest in England. An extensive glossary is also included. For further information, visit the Brepols Web site

The Course This course is an introduction to the history and civilization of Europe and the Mediterranean area in the middle ages. The emphasis is on the dissolution of the classical Greco-Roman world into three kindred civilizations, Byzantium, Islam, and Latin Christendom; the formation of a new civilization in the West; and the beginning of the eventual rise to world predominance of the West.
Reading and Texts Students are required to do a certain amount of assigned reading outside class. The reading for this course comes in two forms - articles on reserve and documents available on the World Wide Web. By the end of the course students should be able to evaluate for themselves both source material from the past and the varied interpretations given to the to those sources. There is a required textbook, but students' primary responsibility is to read and discuss primary source assignments. The textbook (with a new edition for this semester - do not buy older editions) is - Hollister, C. Warren

    Medieval Dublin
Have you ever wondered where exactly the medieval town was located, or why the modern Irish name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath, or why there were two cathedrals in the Middle Ages, or why St. Stephen's Green is so called? Medieval Dublin lies mainly hidden from view, yet the signs are there for those who know how to interpret them. The following ten-point guide to the more important visible remains can be used either as a collection of individual items or as a continuous sequence.
    1. ATH CLIATH
The principal north-south axis of the modern city is represented by O'Connell Street and Grafton Street. A suitable starting-point for this journey into and through the past takes us well to the west of this, to the junction of Thomas Street, Cornmarket, St. Augustine Street and Francis Street. Here almost certainly was the crossing of three great long distance routeways: the Slige Mor to the west, the Slige Midluachra to the north and the Slige Chualann to the south. At low tide travellers on the northern route forded the River Liffey with the help of rafts of hurdle-work deposited on the mud flats, hence the ancient place-name Ath Cliath (= Hurdleford). The baile prefix is first documented in 1368.
When Christianity came to this district, the inhabitants built for themselves a church dedicated to St. Colum Cille (Latin Columba). Its site is more familiar to us as that of Protestant St. Audeon's. The present nave dates from the first half of the thirteenth century, but new windows were inserted in the fifteenth century. The now roofless portions give some indication of the size of what was the biggest parish church in late medieval Dublin.

var TlxPgNm='historical_features_in_the_peak_district'; peak scan HOME GEOLOGY CONTACT US WHAT'S ON? ... The Wirksworth Stone Peak District history : Anglo Saxons to Present D uring the 6th century, an Anglo Saxon group, the Pecsaetan, moved into the Peak. Previously, the area had been inhabited by Celtic peoples. The relationships between Anglo Saxons and Celts (Britons) are problematic; there is evidence of both open hostility and integration, but no clear picture. There is good evidence of famines and an especially virulent form of bubonic plague right across Europe in the second half of the 5th century, however. It is possible, therefore, that the Pecsaetan moved into a virtually empty territory; the low incidence of Celtic place names provides some support for this. (see Peak District Place Names
There are few large features in the landscape which can be linked to the Anglo Saxon period. The most notable are the Grey Ditch ( 182813), which runs across the valley of the Bradwell Brook just north of Bradwell and the Bar Dike (247947) on the edge of Broomhead Moor. Their function and dates are unknown. Both are likely to be the creations of local war lords, partly fortified boundaries, partly symbolic markers. Perhaps they were convenient points to extract tolls from travellers. It is just possible that these earthworks date from the reign of Offa (late 8th century) who was king of Mercia. The border between Northumbria (which covered most of northern England) and Mercia (which covered most of the English Midlands) ran east-west across the northern Peak, and it is possible that Offa's government considered a northern version of Offa's Dyke.
