Norway is much more than beautiful fjords and the midnight sun. We have a long and exciting history as well, of which many exciting objects are on display around in the country. Medieval Scandinavia will guide you through some of that history. The Stave Church is a legacy left us by the Vikings
The tiny wooden temples called Stave Churches , of which a sketch of Rollag Stave Church of Numedal can be seen above, have survived here for nearly 900 years. This kind of churches were once a common sight all over Northern Europe, but for some reason only a few made it into our time. Constructed of Pine, using a technique left by the Vikings, these relics are indeed a "must see" to everyone who visit us. A unique find of a Viking chieftain and his gear
During the spring of 1943, a local farmer from the district of Ringerike made a remarkable discovery on his property. He had set out to find a suitable place to construct a new home, and stumbled over one of the richest finds ever made of the

Introduction
Medieval Europe was a constant battleground, from petty border disputes to internal power struggles and National rivalries. The Church was as much a competitor as it was a peace keeper. Feudalism, the Roman Catholic Church and the Code of Chivalry provided the framework for the social, political and economic environments of Europe during the Middle Ages. Emphasis was on manor life in the Early Middle ages but shifted to the cities and commercial activities during the later period. Monasteries gave way to Universities as centers of learning. Medieval art was primarily art of the Church. After the period of migration (AD500 - 800) in which the art was small and personal, the Germanic tribes settled into the old Roman Empire. Intricate and organic designs dominated this period. Later, beautiful illuminated manuscripts as well as relief sculpture were used to instruct an illiterate faithful. Massive Romanesque and then richly ornate Gothic cathedrals with ethereal stain glass windows soared to unbelievable heights. The journey from pessimism and superstition to intellectual and creative revival was reflected in the changing styles of art. Back to Top

Vikings
The Vikings are Indo-European people from Scandinavia (modern Denmark, Norway and Sweden), who began around the 400's AD to make frequent raids by boat into Europe, even going into the Mediterranean Sea and raiding Sicily and southern Italy. Since they are from Scandinavia , they are related to the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths , who also came from Scandinavia. This did not stop the Visigoths from fighting the Vikings when the Vikings began attacking the Atlantic coast of southern France around 400 AD. In 860 AD, another branch of Vikings migrated south into Russia, where they gradually mixed with the Slavs who were living there. Together, the Slavs and the Vikings took their boats down the Dnieper river to the Black Sea, where they raided the Roman territory around Constantinople, though they could not take the city itself.

It is arranged thematically following the general plan of the Internet Medieval Sourcebook . "Medieval" has been taken very widely - from the first-century (CE) Roman Empire until the 17th-century. Although "medieval" and "movies" might not seem to be a good fit and a lot of bad films have been made it is perhaps worth noting that they have gone together since the earliest surviving American feature film - André Calmettes and James Keane Richard III of 1912.
