Only from 1995 the PC started to be connected into networks according to different projects of the National Program on Information Technology. A nation-wide information network is being to establish in 1996 and will be finished by end of 1997. In general, Vietnam has not Information Technology legacy because of its backward and the isolation with the world during period 1960-1990. Vietnam has no mainframe, but a few old mini computers. The most computers used now are PCs. Currently there are no official statistics on computer park in Vietnam and several sources show very different statistics. As reported by the Vietnam National Steering Committee on IT, till the end of 1996, personal computers in Vietnam amounted to 240,000 units, half of which was made by reputable firms (Compaq, IBM, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Acer, NEC, Fujitsu) covering 78% of the total value. The other 22% came from computers assembled locally with components manufactured in Southeast Asia. The computer percentage reached 3.2 units/1,000 persons, equivalent to that of Indonesia in few years ago (3/1,000), yet far in comparison with those in Malaysia (11/1,000) and Singapore (80/1,000).

East Asian Languages and Civilizations Elementary Vietnamese (B) provides students with a basic ability to understand, speak, read and write Vietnamese. This course features a comprehensive and systematic survey of the fundamentals of Vietnamese phonetics, spelling rules, grammar, usage of vocabulary and gives students a basic conversational ability through an interactive and communication-oriented approach. In the second semester, texts on Vietnamese culture, ads taken from Vietnamese newspapers and magazines, and other similar materials are used to enhance students' reading skills. Intermediate Vietnamese (101) is a continuation of Vietnamese B. This course aims to develop speaking, reading, reading, writing skills and aural comprehension through introducing Vietnamese grammar and usage of vocabulary at a higher level. The topics of the texts include Vietnamese geography, history, culture, and customs. Audiotapes, videoclips and similar materials are used to enhance students' listening skills. The course is conducted entirely in Vietnamese and students are expected to speak Vietnamese during all class discussions. Advanced Vietnamese (103) is designed for students who wish to gain proficiency in Vietnamese in speaking, aural comprehension, reading and writing. Students are introduced to more complex grammar and vocabulary, using texts on Vietnamese history, culture and customs. Discussions focus on selected short stories and poems. Audiotapes and videoclips of Hanoi TV broadcasts are used. In addition, students practice translating from English into Vietnamese short paragraphs from U.S. newspapers. The course is conducted entirely in Vietnamese.

What could be more enjoyable than learning the idiom of another culture, and then to travel to that land and be able to speak and communicate in the native tongue. You will experience the joy of understanding, and the appreciation of the people who you meet, as they thank you for taking the time and patience to understand their way of thinking and their life. Browse through our considerable resources and pick out the products which are most suited to your needs and budget. We offer all levels. Go at your own pace. It's easy and fun. To take advantage of these materials, set aside a definite time to study each week, and then stick to it faithfully. It’s best to study at least three times per week, and at least one hour each time. Don’t’ forget to do memorization exercises each time for at least 20 minutes. Make your own flash cards and carry them with you wherever you go. Put 3 or 4 foreign words on one side and the English equivalents on the other. If you’re going on a trip, take the flashcards with you. Try to progress at your own pace. Listen to the same words and phrases over and over again, so you can pick up the correct pronunciation. Don’t forget to concentrate on grammar, which is the way a sentence is structure. Most grammar is pretty simple. Once you understand it, everything else seems to fall into place. The two most important verbs are "go" and "want". It's amazing how many sentences you can form just using those verbs. So practice a thousand variations of those verbs in a sentence. Always start with the present tense. Once you feel comfortable with that, then move to the past tense and then finally use the future tense. With three tenses under your belt, you can hold an advanced beginner conversation and consider yourself "fluent". At least in your own mind. After that, the world just seems to open up.
