Watergate can be compared and contrasted to other scandals associated with the White House. For this lesson, you will need: Reference materials (news stories and analyses) published at the time of the scandals under study and materials published subsequently Index cards for note taking After your class has studied Watergate, initiate a discussion of other White House scandals. Students or you should bring up at least the following four: Teapot Dome, Iran-Contra, Whitewater, and Lewinsky. Regardless of how much or how little students seem to know initially about the four other scandals, explain that you expect each of them to become fully informed about one. Explain that you also expect each student to write a detailed and fully documented comparison-and-contrast report on Watergate and one other White House scandal. Resources: Vietnam Information The Socialist Republic of Vietnam The two seasons in northern Vietnam, winter and summer, are from November to April and may to October, respectively. Seasons in the south range from Wet to dry, with the hottest time being the end of February to May. Average humidity hovers around 80% and the temperature averages about 22-33 Degrees. The Vietnamese government is based on a communist republic system and headed by President Tran Duc Luong and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. Just recently opened to the foreigners, in 1992, the population is still relativity friendly to foreign visitors and the general attitude shown by the local population has yet to be jaded by excessive tourism. Major products and industries include rice, rubber, food processing, sugar, textiles, and chemicals. A large portion of the available work force still engaged in agricultural ventures.

  • Tapping Prior Knowledge: The Vietnam War.
    Ask students to work together as a class or in small groups to share what they know about the Vietnam War. Encourage students to think about stories they may have heard from family members who remember the Vietnam War, as well as documentaries and movies they have seen. Record facts and impressions on the board.
  • Staying Alive.
    Have students write about how they think they might react in a life-or-death situation, such as a war or a natural disaster. Encourage them to explore possible reactions.
