Vietnamese American Reaction Divided
By Janet Dang
However, reactions from Vietnamese Americans, many of whom are political refugees, were mixed. Van Thai Tran said that many Vietnamese Americans have close ties with McCain because he is viewed as a heroic war figure, risking his life to fight for South Vietnam. Before the United States became involved in the conflict in Vietnam, the northern and southern regions of the country were embattled in a bitter fight for the country. In 1954, France ended its 100 years of colonial rule after loses to Vietnamese forces, according to Robert Brigham, a professor at Vassar College. That same year, France and Vietnam signed the Geneva Peace Accords, which created the partition of the country at the 17th parallel. By 1957, the U.S.-funded South Vietnamese forces had launched pre-emptive attacks against the communist North Vietnam, driven by fears that the revolutionary state wanted to take the South by force. Two years later, the North Vietnamese Communist Party, led by Ho Chi Minh, approved plans to violently overthrow South Vietnam.

Diabetes in Asian and Pacific Islander Americans
On this page: Diabetes mellitus poses a rapidly growing health challenge to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the United States. In 1997, the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) population was estimated to be about 10 million, almost a 50 percent increase since the 1990 Census and representing about 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population. This group includes people whose origins are in the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Pacific Islands. Results of the 1990 census showed that the APIA population had the greatest increase of any major ethnic group, doubling in size since the 1980 census. The Immigration Act of 1965 and the arrival of many Southeast Asian refugees under the Refugee Resettlement Program after 1975 contributed to the increase in population observed in the past two decades.

Ethnically- -Chinese-Vietnamese-American By Diana Lin and Sophia Nguyen, Writers for the San Diego Asian Film Foundation Tran and the Buddhist monk in THE ANNIVERSARY Many within the Asian film festival community were shocked when Ham Tran’s THE ANNIVERSARY did not make the final Oscar nomination list. Shot on 35 mm and on location in Vietnam, Tran’s UCLA thesis project is an anachronistic journey through post-war Vietnam, interspersed with a Buddhist monk’s memories of war and betrayal on the anniversary his brother’s death. When the Oscar nomination list was released, some pointed to racism, corruption, or just plain ignorance as the deciding factor, but Tran has a different take.

Introduction Rationale for Multiethnic Literature in the Classroom Characteristics of Good Multiethnic Literature History of Asian American Literature ... Movies
    Introduction
Asian American literature is a growing new field. It is considered one of the subdivisions of multicultural literature. The literature today like the Joy Luck Club are best sellers in the book market and there is a growing demand for more.
The Asian population of the United States today continues to rapidly increase and they constitute about 2.9% of the total American population. According the 1990 census, the largest Asian minority in the United States are the Chinese Asian population. Of that percentage, Chinese is the largest with a largest percentage being foreign born. The second largest group is the Filipino which constitute 19%. Japanese make up 12% with most of them being native born. Indian and Korean each are at 11% and Vietnamese make up 8% of the population. Another subgroup of Asians includes the Hmong (mung) which are a culture group that immigrated 5,000 years ago from China to the mountainous region of Laos, but many were forced out of their territory during the Vietnam War because they helped the United States during the conflict.
Rationale for Using Multiethnic Literature in the Classroom
The purpose of using multiethnic literature are as follows:
    • . So they can understand differences between cultures.
    • Fiction books can be multi cultural, cross-cultural, or parallel-culture. Developing a relationship through a fictionalized character could be transferred to different culture.

Page 3 of 8 As Houston's Vietnamese community blossomed in the 1990s, the city's non-Vietnamese population discovered Vietnamese cuisine. During the 1992 Republican convention several Vietnamese restaurants were among those recommended by local guides. Today Houston's Vietnamese population is second only to that of Orange Country, California, and La's restaurants grosses $2 million a year. But an ever-growing portion is from the new Caucasian clientele that is gradually driving his Vietnamese following to less trendy eateries. "Now we have a face. Before it was just Blacks, Hispanics and Whites." "It was difficult in the beginning because we didn't have all the Vietnamese ingredients," La says, "but now I don't see any disadvantage to living here. The population is very large, and all the supplies we need for Vietnamese cooking are available."
Several blighted Houston neighborhoods have received a much-needed injection of commercial energy from Asian immigrants ranging from Southeast Asian refugees to Hong Kong tycoons. Their efforts have built a second Chinatown and new Korean, Vietnamese and Thai districts. And Asian American professionals by the thousands have relocated to service these newly Americanized consumers.
The influx of Asians infused the city's small but old Asian establishment with new political clout. Houston's Chinese and Japanese communities date back to the late 19th century, when displaced Chinese railroad workers and Japanese laborers settled there. Small in numbers, their presence attracted little notice from the white, black and Hispanic communities. Some Asians acquired economic clout with the success of their businesses, but even well into the 1970s the community¹s small numbers minimized political influence.
