Data shows that Asian American women between the ages of 15-24 the second highest suicide rate among women across all racial/ethnic groups and that Asian American girls have the highest rates of depressive symptoms of all racial groups. Such alarming statistics could be attributed to barriers to mental health education and services. HUMAN DIGNITY AWARD
April 14, 2004
On April 14, 2004, University President Richard L. McCormick and the Rutgers Committee to Advance Our Common Purposes presented the Human Dignity Award 2004 to the Asian American Cultural Center for its successful efforts in promoting intercultural understanding through cultural programming and research. The award reads: "In recognition of its achievements in expanding the multicultural and international understanding of Rutgers University undergraduates by showcasing Asian heritage, cultures, and contributions as well as providing a supportive environment for Asian American students. The AACC has bridged gaps of diversity in initiatives such as the Pan-Asian Lunar New Year Celebration, as well as comparative dance workshops in cooperation with the Rutgers Dance Department. Supported by center director To-Thi Bosacchi, Asian American students have established a newspaper, ConversAsian, and the Rutgers Chinese Dance Troupe. The AACC has also conducted important research projects, including the state-funded Oral History of Vietnamese Refugees. Since its creation in 2000, the Asian American Cultural Center has made remarkable strides in promoting diversity and in uniting Asian American student communities at Rutgers, and truly reflects the spirit in which this award was created."

Asian Americans People from Asia have been migrating to the United States for nearly 200 years now. The first Asian immigrants came from China, and they were brought over by American companies seeking cheap laborers. Early Asian immigrants, mostly Chinese and Japanese, were met with resentment and racism by whites in the U.S. In addition to violent attacks, early Asian immigrants were subjected to a long list of anti-Asian legislation. One of the effects of this legislation was to make it nearly impossible for any new immigrants from Asia to come to the United States for nearly a century until the mid-1960s. As a result, the vast majority of the Asian-Pacific American population has come to the United States during the past four decades.
As with the other groups of racial categorization, the race “Asian” is problematic. It is based largely on geography, rather than on the race of the people. For instance, people from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India do not racially look like people from China, Japan, and Vietnam but are categorized in the same race because of their geography.

I am therefore interested in the political and the social of the so-called private. My research employs both interviews and participant observations and aligns with feminist and race theories. I have published on topics of Vietnamese transpacific marriages and on racialized identities of second generation Vietnamese Americans. College Student Journal
March, 2001 by Jenny K. Yi Anne Marie Daniel
Introduction Methods In addition to demographic and acculturation questions students were asked about their use of substances: alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. Use of alcohol and cigarette were scored as dichotomies: current uses or nonuse. Use of illicit substance was scored as dichotomies: never used or ever used. Use of amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin are not reported here because of very small numbers. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical analysis system. Tests of significance included chi-square for cross tabulations and t-tests for continuous variables. Bivariate associations between the dependent variable and the independent variables were examined to identify subgroups within Vietnamese students who are most likely to use substance. Finally, logistic regression analyses were performed to determine factors associated with each substance. Results Next

COMING TO AMERICA
With the fall of Saigon in April 1975, many Vietnamese officials and service personnel closest to the American troops were lifted to safety and processed for resettlement. It was only the beginning of a humanitarian crisis, studied by the United Nations in a 1979 conference, which would result in the United States and several other western nations accepting approximately 700,000 Vietnamese refugees.
From the end of the Vietnam War through 1983, former South Vietnam soldiers, displaced civilians, farmers left with destroyed fields, suspected American loyalists, and heavily-persecuted Chinese Vietnamese fled their homeland. Many crowded onto unstable fishing boats and floating platforms made of tires and sheet metal. With grim prospects, they set course for the South China Sea, to be rescued by sympathetic ship pilots or washed ashore in Thailand and Malaysia, or be captured. Through illness, dehydration, starvation, and violent weather, as many as half of the refugees may have died at sea. Many were robbed and killed by pirates.
ONCE BOAT PEOPLE
Lifted from the seas by Chinese merchant ships and foreign navies, many who were children still remember the terror and relief of resting on the decks of Australian and Indonesian war vessels, while their parents wondered if they would be processed and transferred to safety, or returned to Vietnam to risk their lives another day.

College of Ethnic Studies Undergraduate Programs
The Asian American Studies Department, the largest of four departments in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, was established in fall 1969 as a result of the Third World Student Strike. The Department currently consists of five Asian American ethnic units: Chinese American, Filipino American, Japanese American, Korean American, and Vietnamese American. It is a full service academic unit that offers a comprehensive program of study on the Asian American experience with a commitment to serving the University, its students, and the Asian American communities. At present, the Department offers fifty sections of classes taught by a faculty of twenty-plus to approximately two thousand students each semester. Students may take Asian American Studies courses for a baccalaureate major or minor, and to partially fulfill the Liberal Studies major, general education, and University statutory graduation requirements. In 1994, the Asian Pacific American Education Advisory Committee of the Chancellor's Office recognized and acknowledged the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University as an "exemplary" program.

Asian-American Identity Problems
for Dr. Ryang
Asian Civilization I
Introduction/Overview
While Asian-Americans have a very rich culture, often they suffer from problems of identity crises, as do many in this country. Should one maintain a sense of family history? Or is it better to try to blend in and assimilate with the rest of America? This is a problems many minorities, in general, face, but Asian-Americans seem to have a particular presence in this problem. There are countless reasons as to why this could be. This paper will explore specific problems among Asian-Americans trying to find an identity as well as possible reasons and solutions for this problem. The information from this paper comes from books containing oral histories, statistical books, and personal interviews, as well as a smattering of hypothesizing and author's contemplation on the subject.
History of Asian Dissension
From the very point in the mid-19th century that Chinese people began to come to the United States, there was a general distaste for these foreigners. Stereotypes surrounded them and while having their supporters, many people made it publically known their views on Chinese immigrants. An 1873 editorial in the magazine The Elevator shows the ignorant hostility being vented: This disturbing train of thought suffers from what many racist rationalizations do: poorly thought out arguments. The most notable one in this particular editorial is the reference to Chinese as "pagans in religion." This is ironic because while many Chinese of the time did not subscribe to Christianity, their primary religion was Buddhism, a clearly monotheistic religion. A pagan, as defined by the Miriam-Webster dictionary, is a "follower of a polytheistic religion."
