Videos While our Vietnam War section concentrates on the time period from 1960 to 1975, you will find material on the French involvement as well as the events after the fall of Saigon. From an American viewpoint, the Vietnam War is not well understood. Even though it was part of the American daily life for some fifteen years, there is no consensus as to its purpose and result. Some Americans believe that Vietnam was a national policy blunder costing some 58,000 American lives and billions of tax dollars. That it divided the country at a time when it most needed to be unified leaving scars that are yet to be healed. Others believe the war was a noble cause similar to the United Nations effort that kept South Korea free. A brief look at the war itself reveals that it started out rather benignly with the sending of American advisors to assist the South Vietnamese train its growing army. The stated objective was to allow the South Vietnamese Army to resist aggression from the North and to preserve their sovereignty as a democratic nation. As time passed and American administrations changed, the roles changed until it became an American led and financed conflict. The number of American combat troops increased dramatically and a massive air war was executed in an attempt to interdict the escalating resupply of the North Vietnamese divisions in the South. The South Vietnamese received financial aid from a number of nations; and Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and others contributed manpower. However, the war was predominately an American show.

eHistory > American Civil War Search Store Members Articles ... Trivia Game From April 1861 to April 1865, a brutal civil war was fought between the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. The American Civil War is one of the most researched conflicts in modern history, yet many people still desire more knowledge about it. The roots of this tragic conflict go back to the birth of the country. The founding fathers, for all their wisdom, could not solve all the differences between the original thirteen states. The products of their labors, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, failed to totally define the relationship between the Federal Government and the States. The slavery question received no more than a partial and temporary solution. These issues of states' rights festered and the rhetoric inside the Congress grew more heated. Finally, words were no longer enough for some and the nation began to split apart. The secession of eleven Southern States and the unbending position of President Lincoln toward preserving the Union led to the first shot fired on Fort Sumter in 1861. The Rubicon had been crossed. The next four years can only be described as an intensely fought conflict between two groups of Americans, each believing their cause was just. Over

Learn About the Vietnam War Between 1945 and 1954, the Vietnamese waged an anti-colonial war against France, which received $2.6 billion in financial support from the United States. The French defeat at the Dien Bien Phu was followed by a peace conference in Geneva, in which Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam received their independence and Vietnam was temporarily divided between an anti-Communist South and a Communist North. In 1956, South Vietnam, with American backing, refused to hold the unification elections. By 1958, Communist-led guerrillas known as the Viet Cong had begun to battle the South Vietnamese government. From 1968 to 1973 efforts were made to end the conflict through diplomacy. In January 1973, an agreement reached and U.S. forces were withdrawn from Vietnam and U.S. prisoners of war were released. In April 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to the North and Vietnam was reunited CONSEQUENCES: 1. The Vietnam War cost the United States 58,000 lives and 350,000 casualties. It also resulted in between one and two million Vietnamese deaths.

V isitors began leaving tokens of remembrance at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982, while it was still under construction. Flags and flowers historically have decorated veterans' monuments, but the presence of many other mementos is unique to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The first, a Purple Heart, was thrown by a Vietnam veteran into the wet cement of the Memorial's foundation. Since then, visitors from at home and abroad have left more than 25,000 keepsakes at the Memorial, collected daily by National Park Service rangers. Each has its own story, often known only to the donor. This collection of messages and gifts from the heart was created by relatives, former comrades-in-arms, friends, neighbors, and members of civic and fraternal organizations. It expresses the love, grief, and pain they associate with the 58,220 names on the Memorial's 140 black granite panels. This unsolicited outpouring occurs year round, particularly at Christmas, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veterans Day. The gifts also commemorate birthdays of dead and missing veterans and other days of personal importance. This selection of remembrances provides us an opportunity to ponder the continuing impact of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the generation that lived through that conflict.

The name I received in response to my request was James Arthur Harwood , a Sergeant in the US Army (5th Special Forces) who went Missing In Action in South Vietnam on 15 January 1971. There was another man lost in the same incident, a First Lieutenant by the name of Gerald Francis Kinsman ; I decided to adopt him too. I built remembrance pages for both the men on my 'have fun, catch all' website, that, amongst other things, included cyber pet adoptions and personal photos. Later on that year, I decided to create a site just for the guys. While I added to the site on occasion, it was not large, and I thought that with those two men, "that was that." Wrong. Around January or February of 1999, I began to think about the POW/MIA issue some more, and decided to see if there were any women I could adopt. I was informed that there was one, a civilian (missionary) surgeon named Dr. Eleanor Ardel Vietti

var loc = "../../"; "Give War a Chance" is the story of two American leaders whose lives and experiences reflect the Vietnam generation's conflicting views about the use of America's military might. It is the story of Richard Holbrooke, U.N. Ambassador-nominee, architect of the 1995 Bosnian peace accords, and ret. Admiral Leighton "Snuffy" Smith, a Vietnam war hero who became NATO's commander in Bosnia and whose mission was to enforce the Bosnia peace. Each man spent his formative years in Vietnam, butsome thirty years laterthe Balkans crisis brought them into direct conflict over the role and responsibilities of today's military in securing and maintaining global peace.

Where are our Veterans ?
Where are the Veterans, who went to fight a war,
And never did return, upon American soil?
The many soldiers missing, rumors that still last, Has America forgotten, these Veterans of our past? Among the many rumors, scattered here and there, Are stories of our veterans, left without a care. We see pictures in the paper, read articles all the time , About the many Veterans, America left behind. It's hard to believe our government, could be so very cruel, To leave behind Americans, they don't deserve to rule . If our men were left behind, it just might happen again, America should question now

Reasons for War American Tactics Vietnamese Tactics Opposition to war ... Why USA lost US Tactics Working closely with the Army of the South Vietnamese ( Arvin ’s) the Americans tried to make it difficult for the Viet Cong (Vietnamese Communists – ‘Victor Charlie’) to gain support from the South Vietnamese peasants. Strategic Hamlet ’ attempted to place peasants in fortified villages at night, where they couldn’t be ‘infiltrated’. This backfired badly. It was very unpopular with the peasants who resented being so far away from their rice fields and ancestors. VC demolished many of the fortified villages anyway. The Air War – Frustrated by lack of success on the ground, the US tried to win the war from the air. Operation Rolling Thunder that began with dropping millions of tons of High Explosive bombs on North Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh trail.

11 September 2001 We Will Not Forget Medal of Honor What is the Medal of Honor? The Medal of Honor is awarded by the President in the name of Congress to a person who, while a member of the military, distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The deed performed must have been one of personal bravery or self-sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his comrades and must have involved risk of life. Incontestable proof of the performance of the service will be exacted and each recommendation for the award of this decoration will be considered on the standard of extraordinary merit. Thousands of Canadians, including a Medal of Honor winner, served with the U.S. military in Vietnam. Although not directly involved in the Vietnam War, Canada was part of the International Control Commission (ICC) set up by the Geneva Conference in 1954. "Unlike Hungry and Poland, which supported North Vietnam," writes Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., in his Vietnam War Almanac, "Canada attempted to remain impartial. However, it provided economic assistance to South Vietnam." As a result of the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, the ICC was superseded by the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS). Canada and Poland remained members, but India was replaced by Indonesia. "When it became apparent that the North Vietnamese had no intention of living up to the accords," says Summers, "Canada withdrew on July 31, 1973 and was replaced by Iran." Although pressured by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson to become part of the "Free World Military Forces" (Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Taiwan and the Kingdom of Thailand) which provided combat troops to aid South Vietnam, the Canadian cabinet believed that because of its ICC membership Canada had to remain its impartiality. But while Canada as a nation was not involved, Canadians themselves formed the largest foreign contingent in the U.S. military during the Vietnam era. Some estimate that their numbers far suppressed the more than 30,000 Americans draft dodgers who fled to Canada to avoid military service during the war. While exact numbers are impossible to obtain, from my work as a military historian with the Canadian War Museum, I estimate that of the many thousands who served in the U.S. Vietnam-era military, some 12,00 Canadians actually served in Vietnam itself.
