The A merican V eterans T raveling T ribute is an unforgettable exhibit that pays tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Vietnam War is of major importance to the Tribute and the 4/5 scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is its visual centerpiece, standing 8 feet high at the apex and spanning 378 feet! (Note: The "Wall" is structurally accurate and name listings are updated when changes are made to the Memorial in Washington, D.C.)
The purpose
of the "Traveling Tribute" is not to glorify wars fought, but to pay homage to those who served their country. To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, their life, the Tribute insures their memory shall never fade. To the former POW's of all wars, who endured unimaginable hardship and pain in the name of democracy, the Tribute honors their service to our country. To our Prisoners Of War & Missing In Action, who were left behind, the Tribute is dedicated to their memory. To all veterans who made it back, the Tribute simply says... Welcome Home.
The mission of the "Traveling Tribute" is to traverse America, being displayed in as many communities as annual scheduling permits. One of the Tribute's primary functions is to allow people visiting the site to share a common bond of experience. As memory begins to fade on the sacrifices made by those who gave when America asked, a vital component of the Tribute is its educational value for our youth.

Introductory Essay to Vietnam: A Television History by David McCullough The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular war in which Americans ever fought. And there is no reckoning the cost. The toll in suffering, sorrow, in rancorous national turmoil can never be tabulated. No one wants ever to see America so divided again. And for many of the more than two million American veterans of the war, the wounds of Vietnam will never heal. Fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives. The losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling. The financial cost to the United States comes to something over $150 billion dollars. Direct American involvement began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and we fought the war until the cease-fire of January 1973. To a whole new generation of young Americans today, it seems a story from the olden times. In 1983, the unfolding of the Vietnam tragedy was the focus of an extraordinary documentary series broadcast on public television.

LESLIE TROMBLY THERE IS A VALLEY OF TEARS THAT COVERS THIS NATION - FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND EAST TO WEST SEE THE FACES OF LOVED ONES LOST IN SENSELESS WAR WHO ARE FILLED WITH PAIN AND SORROW. HEAR THE RESTLESS SOULS OF MEN AND WOMEN, LONG SINCE DEAD, CRY OUT IN ANGUISH -"PLEASE DO NOT FORGET ME!" THERE IS NO PEACE ON EARTH SO A FAMILIAR SONG HAS BEEN SUNG, NOR IS THERE ANY LASTING PEACE FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT, AND SUFFERED AND EVEN DIED SO LONG AGO. THEY FOUGHT A WAR THAT COULD HAVE BEEN WON OR LOST, TO ONLY BE SENT HOME IN DISGRACE AND TO SEE A NATION TURN IT'S BACK ON THEM. AN UNWANTED WAR, AN UNGRATEFUL NATION, THAT'S LONG SINCE BEEN SWEPT AWAY LIKE YESTERDAY'S NEWS.

88. John Kennedy And The Cold War
A discussion of John F. Kennedy as Cold Warrior, his belief in communist expansionism, and his role in escalating american involvement in vietnam.
http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/progjfk5.htm
Kennedy and the Cold War T hroughout his pre-presidential career, JFK was an active Cold Warrior. As noted, his first Congressional campaign boasted of taking on the anti-Cold War faction of the Democratic party led by Henry Wallace, and as a congressman he aligned himself with those who said the Truman Administration wasn't being tough enough, when he willingly attached his name to the chorus demanding "Who Lost China?" One does not even have to rehash his relationship with Joseph McCarthy to show how JFK willingly played the "tough on communism" issue in all his campaigns. In 1952, while running for the Senate, he proudly trumpeted the fact that during his first term in the House, even before Nixon had won fame for the exposure of Alger Hiss, JFK's work on a labor committee led to the conviction of a communist union official. While in Congress, he supported all of America's overseas activities in waging the Cold War. Even while running for President in 1960, JFK appealed to the "tough on the Soviets" issue by consistently hammering at Eisenhower for America's supposed lack of leadership, and America "falling behind the Soviets." It was JFK, promising more money for defense spending and American readiness when he charged Eisenhower for allowing a non-existent "missile gap" to develop between the U.S. and Soviet nuclear arsenals. And it was JFK, who during the debates with Nixon, charged that Eisenhower policy had resulted in the loss of Cuba.

93. Propaganda, American-style
Article by Noam Chomsky on media manipulation and propaganda of the US, focusing on World war I, vietnam, and central America.
http://www.zpub.com/un/chomsky.html
Propaganda, American-style
by Noam Chomsky
Pointing to the massive amounts of propaganda spewed by government and institutions around the world, observers have called our era the age of Orwell. But the fact is that Orwell was a latecomer on the scene. As early as World War I, American historians offered themselves to President Woodrow Wilson to carry out a task they called "historical engineering," by which they meant designing the facts of history so that they would serve state policy. In this instance, the U.S. government wanted to silence opposition to the war. This represents a version of Orwell's 1984, even before Orwell was writing. In 1921, the famous American journalist Walter Lippmann said that the art of democracy requires what he called the "manufacture of consent." This phrase is an Orwellian euphemism for thought control. The idea is that in a state such as the U.S. where the government can't control the people by force, it had better control what they think.. The Soviet Union is at the opposite end of the spectrum from us in its domestic freedoms. It's essentially a country run by the bludgeon. It's very easy to determine what propaganda is in the USSR: what the state produces is propaganda. That's the kind of thing that Orwell described in 1984 (not a very good book in my opinion). 1984 is so popular because it's trivial and it attacks our enemies. If Orwell had dealt with a different problem ourselveshis book wouldn't have been so popular. In fact, it probably wouldn't have been published.

Main My First Home Page htmlAdWH('7002588', '234', '60'); Gift of Reckoning by David Llorente This is a work of fiction firmly interwoven with a historical happening in our time. Its catalyst was the marvel over the courage and honor of our country's Prisoners of War held for years in the infamous Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton) in Hanoi, North Vietnam. Oftentimes the author and his aviator contemporaries would ask the question of themselves, "- - - might I have had the mettle to endure with honor as they had?" Ashamedly, they would confess of their doubts. Their heroism endured for years and not just an instant in time. American POWs in Hanoi, July 1966 In this current period of our country's history, our citizenry may consider these men unique - - they were not. They were the product of a generation exemplifying honor, respect and who were not ashamed to sing their country's national anthem aloud - - they knew the words and were proud to be heard. For that generation, it was their privilege to serve their country in its time of need, again unashamedly and unequivocally. Regrettably, a trait seemingly no longer fashionable.
