The New York Times, which prepared a series of lengthy articles and began publication on June 13, 1971. That started an extraordinary federal court battle that pitted the U.S. government against the press and ended up in the U.S. Supreme Court less than two weeks later. On June 15, 1971, the government rushed into federal district court in New York City and got a temporary restraining order blocking further publication by the Times . While the government and the Times were arguing about a preliminary injunction on Friday, June 18, 1971, the Washington Post published parts of the Pentagon Papers. That same day, Assistant U.S. Attorney General William Rehnquist, now Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, phoned the Washington Post and asked it to stop publication of the Papers. The Post refused. Later that day, the government went to court in Washington, D.C., but failed to get an injunction against the Post . This was a win for the Post Post and ordered the lower court to hold a hearing and decide the case on Monday, June 21, 1971. This was a win for the government. Times . The war in Vietnam (5/15)
Previous Page Next Page Indochina was still another Cold War battlefield. France had controlled Vietnam since the middle of the 19th century, only to be supplanted by Japan during the Second World War. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese communist, sought to liberate his nation from colonial rule and took the American War for Independence as his model. After the Allies defeated the Japanese in 1945, they still had to deal with Ho Chi Minh. France, hoping to regain great-power status, insisted on returning to Vietnam. Ho refused to back down, and the war for liberation continued. The United States, eager to maintain French support for the policy of containment in Europe, provided France with economic aid that freed resources for the struggle in Vietnam. Even that assistance could not prevent French defeat in 1954. At an international conference in Geneva, Vietnam was divided, with Ho in power in the North and Ngo Dinh Diem, a Roman Catholic anti-communist in a largely Buddhist population, heading the government in the South. Elections were to be held two years later to unify the country. Persuaded that the fall of Vietnam could lead to the fall of Burma, Thailand and Indonesia, Eisenhower backed Diem's refusal to hold elections in 1956 and began to increase economic and military aid. Kennedy increased assistance, and sent small numbers of military advisors, but still the struggle between North and South continued. Diem's unpopularity culminated in his overthrow and death in 1963.

Part I: The Reconstruction of American Society, 1865-1920s Lecture 01
    Reconstructing the Nation

America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction."
See Calendar for course outline and lecture topics

    Lecture 02

    The "New South"
By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.

The Asian Connection: Road to Vietnam
The Vietnam War was the longest and most costly war in American history. From the Second World War through the end of the Cold War, United States policymakers tried to apply the lessons they had learned in Europe to the foreign policy problems of Asia. As a result, United States foreign policy in Asia was often incoherent and American intervention in Asian affairs often ended in tragedy. This lecture traces the origins and consequences of American involvement in Southeast Asia. Some questions to keep in mind:
  • Pointing to specific instances, explain how effectively or ineffectively American foreign policy leaders have maintained the ideal of political "self-determination" since World War I. Why was the "Domino Theory" an effective means of gaining political and popular support for American active involvement in foreign affairs? Compare and contrast JFK and LBJ's specific reasons for increasing America's involvement in the Vietnam conflict.

Every night, american civilians were faced with the harsh realities of a war we could not win on their television sets. vietnam was the first televised war
    http://www.bergen.org/AAST/Projects/Vietnam/reaction2.html
The conflict in Vietnam was not given a great deal of support from the American public. The enemy was not quite clear, unlike in previous wars in which we knew what we were fighting against. During wars like WWII, nationalism grew and we expected to win. However, where Vietnam was concerned, many people did not even know why we were fighting, including the soldiers. (see the soldiers' experience page Something else that made Vietnam different from other wars was the huge presence of the media on the battlegrounds. Every night, American civilians were faced with the harsh realities of a war we could not win on their television sets. Vietnam was the first televised war, and many say that the media is what made people think so negatively of the whole conflict. Others say that the media is what made us lose the war, although that opinion is not shared by the majority. There was also growing social tension at the time. The sixties were very tumultuous years, because of the war and the social rebellion that took place in this country. The younger generation and their parents were separated by their ideals, culture, and opinions. These young people led many antiwar protests, as well as the civil rights movement and a fight for the environment.

Email this page to a friend with a personal message Beginning in 1957 and ending in 1975, the Vietnam War was America's longest war and her first military failure on foreign soil. Even twenty-five years later, the Vietnam War era is a difficult and complicated subject, both emotionally and historically.
