America's Longest War The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U.S. history. The hostilities in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans. Another 304,000 were wounded. No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular war in which Americans ever fought. And there is no reckoning the cost. The toll in suffering, sorrow, in rancorous national turmoil can never be tabulated. No one wants ever to see America so divided again. And for many of the more than two million American veterans of the war, the wounds of Vietnam will never heal. Fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives. The losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling. The financial cost to the United States comes to something over $150 billion dollars.

"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia,
sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners
will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."

    Martin Luther King Jr., 1963

By 1960 government had become an increasingly powerful force in people's lives. During the 1930s, The White House had initiated legislation and worked closely with Congress to ease the trauma of the Great Depression. New executive agencies were created to deal with many aspects of American life. The number of civilians employed by the federal government rose from 1 million to 3.8 million during World War II, then stabilized at 2.5 million throughout the 1950s. Federal expenditures, which had stood at $3.1 thousand-million in 1929, increased to $75 thousand-million in 1953 and passed $150 thousand-million in the 1960s. Most Americans accepted government's expanded role, even as they disagreed about how far that expansion should continue. Democrats wanted the government to use its power to ensure growth and stability. They wanted to extend federal benefits for education, health and welfare. Republicans, while accepting government's basic and necessary responsibility, hoped to cap spending and restore a larger measure of individual initiative. KENNEDY AND THE NEW FRONTIER John F. Kennedy, Democratic victor in the election of 1960, was at 43 the youngest man ever to win the presidency. On television, in a series of debates with opponent Richard Nixon, he appeared able, articulate and energetic. In the campaign, he spoke of moving aggressively into the new decade, for "the New Frontier is here whether we seek it or not." In his first inaugural address he concluded with an eloquent plea: "Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country." Throughout his brief presidency, Kennedy's special combination of grace, wit and style sustained his popularity and influenced generations of politicians to come.

    WELCOME TO
The Vietnam War: past and present
a resource for high school history teachers
Created and developed by Brian Sims. Last updated on May 26, 1998.
INTRODUCTION: As a watershed event in modern American history, the Vietnam War is an integral part of America today. Indeed, its impact far transcended southeast Asia and the men, women, and nations that participated there it also altered the political, economic, social, cultural, and ideological landscapes of the United States. We still live within the shadows of its legacy. The Vietnam War, therefore, is an essential event to cover in the curriculum of a high school American history class. PURPOSE: It is with this idea in mind that "The Vietnam War: past and present" has been designed, for few events have had such a profound effect on America. In addition, as a former teacher, I understand the many challenges that instructors face in trying to cover recent US history at the end of the academic year. This web page, therefore, is meant to give teachers a fast and easy way to learn about the war, as well as ideas for how the internet can be used to teach it. It is my belief that the expanding nature of the world wide web, coupled with the fact that many Vietnam veterans are actively involved in developing their own war related sites, makes the internet a vital resource for understanding Vietnam both as it happened at the time, and as it lives on today. So, whether you are a new teacher looking for lesson plan ideas, or a wise old sage trying to enhance an already existing syllabus, this web page has been built with you in mind.

    VIETNAM WAR
The Vietnam War, the nation's longest, cost fifty-eight thousand American lives. Only the Civil War and the two world wars were deadlier for Americans. During the decade of direct U.S. military participation in Vietnam beginning in 1964, the U.S. Treasury spent over $140 billion on the war, enough money to fund urban renewal projects in every major American city. Despite these enormous costs and their accompanying public and private trauma for the American people, the United States failed, for the first time in its history, to achieve its stated war aims. The goal was to preserve a separate, independent, noncommunist government in South Vietnam, but after April 1975, the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam ( drv ) ruled the entire nation. The initial reasons for U.S. involvement in Vietnam seemed logical and compelling to American leaders. Following its success in World War II, the United States faced the future with a sense of moral rectitude and material confidence. From Washington's perspective, the principal threat to U.S. security and world peace was monolithic, dictatorial communism emanating from the Soviet Union. Any communist anywhere, at home or abroad, was, by definition, an enemy of the United States. Drawing an analogy with the unsuccessful appeasement of fascist dictators before World War II, the Truman administration believed that any sign of communist aggression must be met quickly and forcefully by the United States and its allies. This reactive policy was known as containment.

    Vietnam War
, military conflict in Vietnam between the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government and the Communist-led guerrilla forces backed by North Vietnam. The war, the nation's longest, resulted in the loss of 58,000 American lives and was the first in which the United States failed to achieve its goals. The tonnage of bombs dropped on North Vietnam by the United States was greater than the total of that dropped on Germany, Italy, and Japan during World War II. The war left up to 10 million refugees and caused sharp divisions among the American people. The Vietnam War followed the Indochina War in which the Vietnamese overthrew French rule when France tried to reestablish its colonial control of Southeast Asia after World War II. The Geneva Accords, which ended the struggle in 1954, created two nations: Communist-ruled North Vietnam and noncommunist South Vietnam. The accords required the holding of elections to determine what government a reunified Vietnam would have, but South Vietnam refused to comply. When North Vietnam, allied with the insurgent Vietcong, sought to overthrow the government of South Vietnam, the United States tried to stop it. American involvement has its roots in Harry S. Truman's decision to contain the spread of communism anywhere. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson carried on this policy, each one escalating U.S. involvement and the number of advisers and (after 1965) combat troops in Vietnam. The number of American troops exceeded 500,000 in 1968.

June 12 Lavelle testifies before Congress Gen. John D. Lavelle, former four-star general and U.S. Air Force commander in Southeast Asia, testifies before the House Armed Services Committee. He had been relieved of his post in March and later demoted after it was determined that he had repeatedly ordered unauthorized bombings of military targets in North Vietnam. Court-martial charges were brought against him by his subordinates but were dropped by the Air Force because the "interests of discipline" had already been served. Lavelle became the first four-star general in modern U.S. history to be demoted on retirement, although he continued to receive full general's retirement pay of $27,000 per year. South Vietnamese premier resigns Mounting Roman Catholic opposition to South Vietnamese Premier Phan Huy Quat's government leads him to resign. The next day a military triumvirate headed by Army General Nguyen Van Thieu took over and expanded to a 10-man National Leadership Committee on June 14. The Committee decreed the death penalty for Viet Cong terrorists, corrupt officials, speculators, and black marketeers. The Catholics approved of Quat's resignation and warned the military against favoring the Buddhists, who asked for an appointment of civilians to the new cabinet.
