Vietnam - History Vietnam has 2000 years of recorded history, with a further 2000 years of myth and legend. Imperial history dates back to the 2nd century BC, with the famous Dongson culture spanning 500-200 BC. The Champa Empire's power lasted from the 2nd century to 1471: all vestiges of the empire finally died out in 1720. It was centred near Danang. Although only a moderate political power, the empire built great towers, considered to be among the finest art in Vietnam. The Le Dynasty then ruled until the Nguyen Dynasty in 1802.
Christianity took root in the 19th century and there were incidents of Christian priests being executed; the French seized the opportunity of taking Saigon in 1859 as a protest. At first the country was known as the colony of Cochin China, but in 1885 it became a French protectorate. After 1900, translations of Western philosophers such as Rousseau influenced Vietnamese intellectuals to resist French rule.

The Founding of Peacetrees Vietnam After months of knocking on doors, this inspired dream became a reality. Parry and Brusseau came to an agreement with the Vietnamese that would allow PeaceTrees Vietnam to work with the people of Quang Tri Province to sponsor the clearance of landmines, plant trees and provide landmine awareness education to the children and community. In September 1996 three ex-US military Demining experts went to Vietnam and donated their time and knowledge to assist the Vietnamese militia in clearing 18 acres of what was once the fiery battlefields of the DMZ. Through the generous donations of PeaceTrees Vietnam supporters, two new schiebel landmine detectors were purchased and donated to the Vietnamese. Under the searing summer sun, the former sworn enemies worked side-by-side to remove hundreds of landmines and unexploded ordnance. These men put their history behind them and became brothers. On September 18th, 1998 phase three of the PeaceTrees Vietnam vision was completed when the Danaan Parry Landmines Education Center opened in Friendship Forest Park. The first ordnance education center of its kind in Vietnam. This center is a valuable resource for the province and will serve as a model for landmines education in Vietnam. Along with teaching children about the dangers of unexploded ordnance, the center will also serve as a training classroom for Vietnamese volunteers who will conduct an outreach program in Quang Tri.

http://countrystudies.us/vietnam/2.htm
History
Vietnam Table of Contents THE VIETNAMESE TRACE the origins of their culture and nation to the fertile plains of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. After centuries of developing a civilization and economy based on the cultivation of irrigated rice, the Vietnamese began expanding southward in search of new ricelands. Moving down the narrow coastal plain of the Indochina Peninsula, through conquest and pioneering settlement they eventually reached and occupied the broad Mekong River Delta. Vietnamese history is the story of the struggle to develop a sense of nationhood throughout this narrow 1,500-kilometer stretch of land and to maintain it against internal and external pressures. The first major threat to Vietnam's existence as a separate people and nation was the conquest of the Red River Delta by the Chinese, under the mighty Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), in the first century B.C. At that time, and in later centuries, the expanding Chinese empire assimilated a number of small bordering nations politically and culturally. Although Vietnam spent 1,000 years under Chinese rule, it succeeded in throwing off the yoke of its powerful neighbor in the tenth century. The Vietnamese did not, however, emerge unchanged by their millennium under Chinese rule. Although they were unsuccessful in assimilating the Vietnamese totally, the Chinese did exert a permanent influence on Vietnamese administration, law, education, literature, language, and culture. Their greatest impact was on the Vietnamese elite, with whom the Chinese administrators had the most contact. The effects of this Sinicization (

peasant with ICP the identified that action an Vietnam, northern in Provinces Tinh Ha and An Nghe soviets?>The ICP was formed in Hong Kong in 1930 from the amalgamation of the Vietnamese and the nascent Lao and Khmer communist groups, and it received its instructions from the Moscow-based Communist International (Comintern).
Communist Movement
The Vietnamese communist movement began in Paris in 1920, when Ho Chi Minh, using the pseudonym Nguyen Ai Quoc, became a charter member of the French Communist Party. Two years later, Ho went to Moscow to study Marxist doctrine and then proceeded to Canton as a Comintern representative. While in China, he formed the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth League, setting the stage for the formation of the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930. French repression of nationalists and communists forced some of the insurgents underground, and others escaped to China. Other dissidents were imprisoned, some emerging later to play important roles in the anti-colonial movement. Ho Chi Minh was abroad at that time but was imprisoned later in Hong Kong by the British. He was released in 1933, and in 1936 a new French government released his compatriots who, at the outset of World War II, fled to China. There they were joined by Ho, who organized the Viet Minh purportedly a coalition of all anti-French Vietnamese groups. Official Vietnamese publications state that the Viet Minh was founded and led by the ICP.

This is the History of (Michael) Anthony Alphonse Tonogan Tony for short. Survivor of a Quintuple By-Pass in December 1999. Born in the Territory of Hawaii, Ewa Beach, Oahu, August 16, 1948. Waipahu High School Class of '66 Alumni . Retired US Army E8 Special Weapons Operations, First Sergeant, Field Artillery Nuclear Fire Support Coordinator. With 20 years service, 2 years Vietnam Combat Service. Twice Married, Three Adult Children, that I know of. More tales to tell at my Next of Kin, and Personal Files. Meet my military family. Pre-War days, my dad served with the Merchant Marines. I am the oldest of four Tonogan boys. My sister Faye, is the oldest of us all. Next to me is Lawrence (Larry), he served in the Marines, a Sergeant E5. John, recently passed away also retired from the Army an E8, Medical Field. The baby, Robert, started out Air Force, E5. Joined the Army, left an E5, I think. My wife's late dad was wounded crossing the Rhein, in WWII he was a Senior Tech Sergeant, an E7 in those days. Well, Enjoy Your Visit! Don't forget to Visit my Operations Central and please sign my guestbook. I always read it and repay the visit. I dedicate this entire humble website to my children who never knew the person I was before their age of knowing the difference between good and evil. I entered the Army an 18 year old, ignorant, immature youngster who thought a black person was just another local boy who stayed out in the sun a little too long. Don't get offensive, that's an old Hawaiian joke. But, the Army matured me real fast, my two years Vietnam experience aged me beyond my years. I learned the value and meaning of life, as well as ruined lives. My daughter elated my entire inner spirit one day with a birthday card to me saying, in not so many words, she understood I loved her even though I don't say it or show it. Of course she was grown, and lived on her own, but she

Vietnam Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world. Despite its ongoing economic liberalisation and the pressures of rapid development, this dignified country has managed to preserve its rich civilisation and highly cultured society. It has discarded its post-war fatigues and the boom in budget travelling, coupled with the softening of government control, have enabled more contemporary and relevant portraits of the country to gain currency in the West. Full country name: Socialist Republic of Vietnam Area: 329,566 sq km
