Traditional boats in Vietnam Photo: Ben Fawcet/Oxfam The history of the Vietnamese people goes back several thousand years. For much of that time they have fought for their independence. The main threat has most often been from their giant northern neighbour, China. For a hundred years, until 1954, they were ruled by France. Soon after the Vietnamese drove the French out, they were caught up in another, even fiercer, war. The Vietnam war raged for nearly 20 years, with many people in the South also supporting Ho Chi Minh. The Americans were not able to defeat the thousands of guerilla fighters, and in 1973, they withdrew from Vietnam. Two years later, the country was reunited. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam came into existence on 2 July 1976. Doi Moi Tut hau In spite of this, the gap between rich and poor is increasing, and Vietnam remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

Marco Polo evoked it in the account of his voyage entitled The Book of Marvels under the name of Caugigui Giao Chỉ Qu¡n ). Viet-Nam's history can be summarized in a few words: struggle for independence, conquest of new land, and reunification of the country. The Vietnamese appear for the first time at the Bronze age ( á»“ng-SÆ¡n civilization ). The Viet tribes who lived scattered south of China and north of Vietnam were undoubtedly wandering hunters kind of people who, because of hunting, liked to move constanly beyond the borders. The Chinese character " nam " (or "nan" in Mandarin), meaning "southern", was used to indicate these Viets of the South as to differentiate from the Viets of the North who remained in China. As for the word Viet (or Yuª in mandarin), it was used by the Zhou dynasty (1050-249 B.C) to indicate the territories located south of China. These Viets of the south, or Southern Viets had, by the end of the second millenium ( two thousand years ) formed kingdoms. á»“ng SÆ¡n civilization The Wise Confucius had already talked about these Viets in his Book of Rites ( Kinh Lễ ). Thanks to the prehensile capability of their well detached big toes from the others, these Viets could cross rice fields and climb mountains without ever being tired. History: For many years, Vietnam formed part of the French colony of Indochina, along with Cambodia and Laos. With Vichy French agreement, in 1941, the Japanese occupied Vietnam during their World War II sweep through South East Asia. The resistance to the Japanese was led by the Indochinese Communist Party, formed by Ho Chi Minh in 1930, and its armed wing, the Viet Minh. Following the Japanese defeat in 1945, the Communists proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In 1946, France sent a large expeditionary force to re-establish their control. After 8 years of fierce fighting, the struggle ended in the defeat of the French garrison at Dien Bien Phu (1954). Vietnamese troops finally withdrew from Cambodia in September 1989. Freed of this burden, Vietnam was able to concentrate on rebuilding its own economy, having introduced a home-grown version of perestroika , known as doi moi . Nonetheless, the Vietnamese economy suffered from the withdrawal of aid and subsidised goods from the former USSR and from Eastern Europe, as well as the continuing US-organised trade boycott instituted after the US withdrawal. In 1991, changes among the Communist Party top leadership indicated that the party was determined to pursue a reformist economic programme while keeping many senior military men in key positions.

Early history
The archaeological excavations carried out recently have proved the presence of human beings in the territory of Vietnam since the Paleolithic Age or the Old Stone Age (300,000 - 500,000 years). In the Neolithic Age (New Stone Age), Hoa Binh - Bac Son cultures (about 10,000 BC) had witnessed the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, including even the technique of paddy rice cultivation. The Vietnamese as an ethnic group had been formed and developed early in the Red river and Ma river delta situated in northern part of the present-day Vietnam. Generations to generations, people moved from highland and mountainous areas to the plains, developed new lands for cultivation. They constructed a system of irrigation dams and dykes to tame the mighty Red River, the river that brought about several devastating floods every year. It is the process of continuous labor to control water - to fight against flood, storm and drought, to build up irrigation dams and canals for agricultural cultivation that formed the paddy rice civilization and the commune culture.
The Dai Viet
In the 10th century AD, the Vietnamese had won their freedom and built up an independent state named Dai Viet. The country was under the ruling of many national feudal dynasties, among which the most important ones are the Ly Dynasty (11th and 12th century), the Tran Dynasty (13th and 14th century), the Le Dynasty (15th, 16th and 17th century) with their centralized administration, strong army forces and a highly developed economy and culture. During this period, Vietnam as a nation had to ceaselessly fought against the vicious conquering conspiracies of Chinese and Mongolian feudal empires. Vietnam's long and tough struggles of resistance against the invasions of the Song (11th century), the Yuan or the Mongols (13th century), the Ming (15th century) had acquired glorious victories. Vietnam became stronger, all its ethnic groups became more united and the country moved into a new prosperous period after each struggle.

Vietnam's History/Background Legend has it that Vietnam began with a mountain fairy, Au Co, and the dragon king, Lac Long Quan. Mother Au Co had 100 eggs, all of which hatched and were sons. The dragon king left his mountain fairy and took with him 50 sons back to the sea, while Au Co took the other 50 sons and returned to the mountains. Until 1945, a dragon was symbolic of the ruler and with kings having a dragon tattooed to their upper thighs until 1293. Since the sons were hatched, the mountain tribe Muong is linked to them, especially since their totem is a bird, while the dragon totem is supposed to protect the Kinh from water dangers. Vietnam's early history includes Chinese takeover, and the Vietnamese responded to it by resisting Chinese rule. Incredibly, the first serious revolt was started by the widow of a killed Chieftain and her sister, the Trung Sisters in A.D. 39. Although their uprising was initially successful , four years later the Chinese re-entered the Red River Delta and recaptured the Vietnamese. Although the following uprisings were for the most part unsuccessful, by the year 939, when the situation in China was chaotic, Ngo Quyen led a Vietnamese rebellion that was successful against the forces occupying his local area. With the Chinese defeat, Ngo Quyen established the Ngo Dynasty which didn't have a long existence. When Quyen died five years later in 944, the dynasty collapsed and a lot of civil unrest followed.

A GLIMPSE OF VIETNAM'S HISTORY
The history of Viet Nam has evolved through diverse fortunes, sometimes progressing, sometimes not, like that of other nations. In seeking a historical constant, one might say that Viet Nam, in its progressive expansions southward, has always been conscious of pressure from her powerful neighbor to the north, China. The Quasi-Legendary Epoch Like any other old nation in the world, Viet Nam has her own legends concerning the origins of the race in the dawn of time. According to the National Annals, illustrious King Lac Long, of the Hong Bang Dynasty and grandson of The God of the Seas, married an immortal called Au Co, a descendant of the angels of the mountains. From this union, one hundred boys were hatched from one hundred eggs carried in a pouch by Au Co; and all the sons were handsome and stalwart. Then, the King and the fairy, conscious of the transitory nature of human existence, and the elusiveness of human happiness, decided to part. Au Co went up to the mountains along with fifty of her sons, and Lac Long went down to the sea with the others. From this separation, the kingdom of One Hundred Principalities(Bach Viet) came into being, including a vast zone adjacent to the Yang-tse-Kiang in the North, the Champa in the south, the China sea in the east, and the Tseu Chouan in the west. Of these principalities, the most powerful and best organized was the Lac Viet, or Van Lang - literally, the country of the lettered - the area of which included present-day North Viet Nam, and the northern part of Central Viet Nam. This Kingdom supposedly endured from 2879 B.C. until 258 B.C., and had 18 kings. Thus, the 18 Hung Vuong kings of the Hong Bang Dynasty reigned for some 2622 years - which would mean an average of 150 years each. So we must assume that there must have been many lesser kings whose names were forgotten long before the period of recorded history.

Country's official name At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the Viet tribe groups had settled down in the North and in the north of Central Vietnam. There were about 15 groups of Lac Viet tribesmen living mainly in the northern highland and delta and a dozen Au Viet groups of tribesmen living in Viet Bac, the northern region of old Vietnam. At that time, the two ethnic tribes of the Lac Viet and Au Viet lived together in many areas with other inhabitants . Due to the increasing need to control floods, fight against invaders, and exchange culture and economy, these tribes living near each other tended to gather together and integrate into a larger mixed group. Among these Lac Viet tribes was the Van Lang, which was the most powerful tribe. The leader of this tribe joined all the Lac Viet tribes together to found Van Lang rd century B.C.

Essay of the Month The Bronze Age
Towards the end of the second millenary B.C., copper and especially bronze made their appearance. Vietnamese soil contains many deposits of copper, tin, lead and zinc, and bronze industry underwent remarkable development. Western archaeologists whose excavations were followed by veritable plunder have given the civilization in Vietnam the name of DONG SON civilization, the first important site having been discovered in Dong son, Thanh hoa province. In fact, Dong son represents an advanced stage of the Bronze Age, and many sites have been discovered in recent years all over the territory of Vietnam, with large quantities of artifacts; all told, about thirty sites with tens of thousands of artifacts. The first copper, then bronze objects appeared beside polished stone implements and earthenware with a still Neolithic character. Sandstone moulds for manufacturing axes, spears, and knives have been found in many places. The quality of the bronze and the shapes improved little by little, eventually ending up with the remarkable creations of Dong son. This evolution took many centuries. While it was marked by external elements, these were not decisive, as claimed by Western archaeologists.
