Conquered by the armies of China's Han dynasty in 111 BC, it was not until 939 AD that the Vietnamese were able to expel the Chinese and begin a southward domination that, by the mid-18th century, had reached the Gulf of Siam. The 17th and 18th centuries were marked by the power struggles between feuding families in the north and south, as they attempted to control the largely ineffectual kings of the Le dynasty. Vietnam finally fell to French colonial rule in 1884, after fierce resistance. Integral to Vietnam's eventual independence was Ho Chi Minh, who was one of many who established the Viet Minh - a broad coalition of anti-French groups. When Japan ousted France from power in March 1945, the Viet Minh began to infiltrate the countryside from their mountain bases in the north. Following Japan's surrender, Viet Minh leaders announced the formation of a Democratic Republic of Vietnam, (DRV) and on September 2, 1945, proclaimed Vietnam's independence. The arrival of Allied forces, however, pushed Vietnam back into the hands of the French. After negotiations between the DRV and the French collapsed in December 1946, the Viet Minh attacked French forces in Hanoi and ignited an eight year war that culminated in the historic French military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Country Info Vietnam Introduction Vietnam General Data Vietnam Maps Vietnam Culture ... Vietnam Time and Date Vietnam History Back to Top TArchaeological findings indicate that settlers in the Red River Delta may have been among the first peoples in East and Southeast Asia to practice agriculture. By the end of the 2nd millennium bc, Vietnamese civilization had begun to enter the Bronze Age. The ancestors of the modern Vietnamese were one of many scattered communities that lived in what are now South China and northern Vietnam during the 1st millennium BC. According to local tradition, a line of hereditary kings ruled over the ancient kingdom of Van Lang in the Red River Delta for thousands of years. Van Lang was conquered by Thuc Phan, who founded a small Vietnamese kingdom called Au Lac. Relatively little is known about the origins of the Vietnamese. They first appeared in history as the so-called “Lac” peoples, who lived in the Red River delta region, in what is now northern Vietnam. Some scholars have suggested that the Lac were closely related to other peoples, known as the Viet (called the Yüeh by the Chinese), who inhabited the coastal region of East Asia from the Yangtze River to the Red River delta during the 1st millennium BC. Others have expressed doubt about this supposition, noting that modern-day Vietnamese share many cultural and linguistic traits with other non-Chinese peoples living in neighbouring areas of Southeast Asia. It is now generally believed that the Lac peoples were the result of a mixture between Australo-Melanesian inhabitants who had lived in the area since Paleolithic times and Asiatic peoples who later migrated into the area from China.

  • 111 BC: The Nam Viet kingdom (spreading from the Red River delta to north of Canton) is annexed by the Han and becomes the chinese district of Giao-chi. The next thousand years is marked by progress in civilization, but also in the national sentiment. Numerous uprisings most notably the Trung sisters (40-43) and Ly Bon (542-545) rebelions, are crushed. During the entire Vietnam history China remains both a model and a threat.
  • 602: Chinese rule is now a protectorat, the capital being Dai La Thanh (Hanoi)
  • 939: Ngo Quyen frees the country (Dai Co Viet) by vanquishing Chinese armies at the Bach Dang river.
  • 968: Dinh Bo Linh pacifies the country, and reorganizes it following the Chinese model. Mandarins will be recruited by litterary contests from 1075 (Van Mieu temple) to 1919. The capital moves to Hoa Lu with the Dinh and first Le dynasties.
  • 1010: The Ly dynasty moves the capital to Thanh Long (Hanoi). During their reign, Chinese, Khmer, and Cham attacks are repelled (most notably by Ly Thuong Kiet). The expension towards the South begins, with territories conquered from the Cham (this resulted in the destruction of their culture).
  • 1226: Tran dynasty.

History Scientists say that Vietnam is one of the earliest cradles of human race. Vietnam, as a nation called Van Lang was formed 4,000 years ago by the Hung kings. Myths said that the Dragon and Fairy met each other, then one bag of hundred eggs was born. In order to control the country easily, fifty of them went up to the mountain with Mother, the Fairy and the other fifty went down to the ocean with Father, the Dragon. Now, there are 54 groups in all living under the same roof. Vietnam has suffered nearly 1000 years Chinese domination, 100 years French invasion and 20 years American occupation.

VIETNAM HISTORY TRIP REPORT. Back to Trips Page The History Department took 35 students to Vietnam on the 18 th th May 2002. The trip was intended to enhance their understanding of the Vietnam War, a topic studied during year 9. We left school at 5:00am on Saturday 18 th May and checked into the airport. Our flight left early at 7:45am and we arrived in Vietnam just after 9am. Our tour-guide Hai, from Saigon Travel met us at the airport and we set off for a full day’s itinerary. The temperature was 37 degrees and the students welcomed the air-conditioned bus. Many of the girls felt it necessary to change up to five times a day. Our first visit was to the Vinh Nghiem Temple, where some students released some birds as a traditional symbol of good luck. In the temple itself, there was a wedding ceremony at one end and a funeral service at the other. Students spent some time watching both. After a brief visit to the Post Office and Notre Damn cathedral, buildings built by the French and which were very colonial in appearance, we went to the War Crimes Museum. This museum was the first place where the students could learn more specifically about the Vietnam War. The museum has horrific evidence left behind after the war. Staff had to emphasise that most of the evidence was particularly biased against the Americans. However, as the students’ own knowledge of the war had been clouded by Hollywood movies, which emphasised the Americans as heroes, it was good to look at the alternative perspective. Students were shocked at some of the evidence they saw, including deformed foetuses in jars, a consequence of Agent Orange and Napalm bombings. This definitely brought home the horrors of war.

Vietnam History At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the Viet tribe groups had settled down in the North and in the north of Central Vietnam. There were about 15 groups of Lac Viet tribesmen living mainly in the northern highland and delta and a dozen Au Viet groups of tribesmen living in Viet Bac, the northern region of old Vietnam. At that time, the two ethnic tribes of the Lac Viet and Au Viet lived together in many areas with other inhabitants .

Muir's Tours Vietnam History Tour Ho Chi Minh Trail
By Award Winning Veteran Combat Photographer
Tim Page POSTPONED TILL 2005 - Tim has been injured and therefore the trip is postponed until next year, about the same time of year.
During mid-February award winning combat photographer Tim Page and documentary film maker Marianne Harris (recording the expedition) will lead a dozen or so veterans, history buffs, academics and interested people on Itinerary
Tim's goal will be primarily to allow you to examine, actually experience, and record aspects of the pivotal role played by the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the Viet Nam conflict. Much was written about the war, but little at all - even today - is known about the Trail. Those who built and used the all-important Trail, the parts they played in the war effort, their motivations, and their fears and loves, are the subject of Tim's retrospective.

The Fifteen Day Expedition
will begin in Hanoi Vietnam, by air and land and will follow the old Ho Chi Minh Trail into Laos and along some of the most rugged road to be found anywhere in the world.
