History
The sophisticated Bronze Age Dong Son culture emerged around the 3rd century BC. From the 1st to the 6th centuries AD, the south of what is now Vietnam was part of the Indianised kingdom of Funan, which produced fine art and architecture. The Hindu kingdom of Champa appeared around present-day Danang in the late 2nd century and had spread south to what is now Nha Trang by the 8th century. The kingdom existed in part through conducting raids in the region. The Chinese conquered the Red River Delta in the 2nd century and their 1000-year rule, marked by tenacious Vietnamese resistance and repeated rebellions, ended in AD 938 when Ngo Quyen vanquished the Chinese armies at the Bach Dang River. During the next few centuries, Vietnam repulsed repeated invasions by China, and expanded its borders southwards from the Red River Delta, populating much of the Mekong Delta. In 1858, French and Spanish-led forces stormed Danang after several missionaries had been killed. A year later, Saigon was seized. By 1867, France had conquered all of southern Vietnam, which became the French colony of Cochinchina. Communist guerillas under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh resisted French domination during and after WWII. Ho Chi Minh's declaration of Vietnamese independence in 1945 sparked violent confrontations with the French, culminating in the French military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

    • 111 BC: The Nam Viet kingdom (spreading from the Red River delta to north of Canton) is annexed by the Han and becomes the chinese district of Giao-chi. The next thousand years is marked by progress in civilization, but also in the national sentiment. Numerous uprisings most notably the Trung sisters (40-43) and Ly Bon (542-545) rebelions, are crushed. During the entire Vietnam history China remains both a model and a threat.
    • 602: Chinese rule is now a protectorat, the capital being Dai La Thanh (Hanoi)
    • 939: Ngo Quyen frees the country (Dai Co Viet) by vanquishing Chinese armies at the Bach Dang river.
    • 968: Dinh Bo Linh pacifies the country, and reorganizes it following the Chinese model. Mandarins will be recruited by litterary contests from 1075 (Van Mieu temple) to 1919. The capital moves to Hoa Lu with the Dinh and first Le dynasties.
    • 1010: The Ly dynasty moves the capital to Thanh Long (Hanoi). During their reign, Chinese, Khmer, and Cham attacks are repelled (most notably by Ly Thuong Kiet). The expension towards the South begins, with territories conquered from the Cham (this resulted in the destruction of their culture).
    • 1226: Tran dynasty.

History and Culture of Vietnam. Throughout frontier. The importance of that presence was established early in Vietnamese history.
    http://www.askasia.org/Vietnam_Challenge/curric/high/01.htm
History and Culture of Vietnam Throughout history, an enduring fact of Vietnamese existence is the presence of its great neighbor China beyond the northern frontier. The importance of that presence was established early in Vietnamese history. During the first millennium B.C., Vietnam emerged as a small principality based on rice culture and local commerce in the lower Red River Delta. In the second century B.C., Vietnam was conquered and integrated into the expanding Chinese empire. For one thousand years, Vietnam was part of China. Chinese officials administered the territory and attempted to assimilate the Vietnamese population into Chinese civilization, then one of the most advanced in the entire world. Chinese political and social institutions were introduced. Vietnamese education was based on the Confucian concept of the civil service examination system. Chinese styles also became dominant in literature and the arts. Educated Vietnamese conversed and wrote in Chinese, and the Chinese system of ideographic characters was adopted as the written form of the Vietnamese language. At the same time, much of the poetry, architecture and painting retained themes distinctive to Southeast Asia. To the Chinese, the absorption of the Red River Delta represented the expansion of a superior civilization over people of primitive culture, a concept of "manifest destiny" not unlike the westward expansion of theUnited States in thenineteenth century. And there is no doubt that one thousand years of Chinese rule left a lasting imprint on Vietnamese culture. But Chinese occupation did not extinguish the Vietnamese view of themselves es as a separate and distinct people. On several occasions, popular uprisings broke out in an effort to evict the foreign intruder. Finally, in the mid-tenth century A.D., Vietnamese rebels took advantage of chaotic conditions in China, drove out the Chinese and restored Vietnamese independence.

    History of Viet Nam
The pre-historic era could be dated back to over 23,000 years ago in Paleolithic Age, as the relics of Homo Erectus were found in the caves of Lang Son and Nghe An province. Gradual evolution emerged to Bronze Age when inhabitants produced bronze tools, and arms with the raising of domestic farms of buffaloes, oxen and pigs. Three cultural groups developed during this age: Pre-Dong Son Culture - lived in the North around Ma River, Ca River and Red River Delta Pre-Sa Hyun - live in Southern area of Central Vietnam
Those inhabited in Dong Nai River During Iron Age, only Pre-Dong son culture developed into Dong Son culture. Birth of Vietnam The first nation of Vietnam being recorded is the Van Lang Nation, founded by the ancient Viet race in the North. The most famous king is Hung King. In 3 B.C, another nation was found by Au Duong Vuong and named Au Lac Nation. The historical remain of Co Loa Citadel is the evidence. In Central Vietnam, another kingdom of Champa emerged from Sa Hyun culture around 2 B.C.

    Colby's Vietnam: History misrepresented
Washington Post Op Ed. May 1, 1981
The following are excerpts from an Op-Ed that ran in the Washington Post on 5/1/81. It is being posted now in light of efforts to eulogize Colby. More importantly the details Colby gave represent programs for action that the CIA follows, to one degree or another, in most of its political operations: empowering a foreign personality who sells himself to the CIA and creats a government subservient to the CIA. Such leaders are traitors to their own people. These Traitors use terror to maintain their rule. The details given below also demonstrate how the CIA writes politicized intelligence to support its operations.
    COLBY'S VIETNAM: HISTORY MISREPRESENTED
Former CIA director William Colby's article "El Salvador: Which Vietnam"? [op-ed, 4/20] describes the various stages of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and offers the period 1968 to 1972the era of the CIA "Phoenix" assassination teamsas a model for use in El Salvador. In addition to this heinous recommendation, his article ignores the massive evidence of the Pentagon Papers and grossly distorts the facts. According to Colby, a prime architect of U.S. policy in Vietnam, America's role in that country began in 1960. This "first" stage lasted until 1963. This era "marked the start of Hanoi's effort to overthrow the South." Colby's statement contains two major misrepresentations. U.S. involvement started in 1949, not 1960, when we sponsored French attempts to reimpose their colonial rule over Indochina. The second major misstatement relates to Hanoi's role in 1960. All objective Vietnamese experts attest to the great reluctance of the North Vietnamese to challenge U.S. power in South Vietnam. However, both the CIA's intelligence and a State Department white paper claimed the opposite was true. From that point forward until April 1975, the war, in U.S. intelligence reports, was portrayed as a North Vietnamese attack on South Vietnam.

    Vietnam History
Vietnam's recorded history begins in 111 BC, when the Chinese conquered the northern part of the region and ruled for more than a thousand years. For the next 700 years, Vietnam was a collection of small, competing kingdoms (the northern and southern portions of the country vied for control even then). The Nguyen dynasty took power in 1802 and ostensibly ruled most of Vietnam until 1954, but the Nguyen emperors were largely controlled by the French after 1887. During World War II, the Japanese invaded. After the war, the French attempted to hang on to Vietnam as a colony. The Viet Minh, a coalition of Communist and Nationalist groups, forced the French out in 1954, and the country was temporarily divided along the 17th parallel. The North consolidated under Communist leadership, and the South went to the Nationalists. An election was supposed to have been held, but the South, suspecting that the North would win, refused to participate. A few months later, the South declared independence.

The early history of Vietnam is that of Tonkin Annam , and Cochin China . The first Europeans to arrive were the Portuguese in 1535. Dutch, French, and English traders came in the 17th cent., at which time missionaries entered the area, winning many converts to Roman Catholicism. The persecution of missionaries and of their Vietnamese converts by the ruler of Vietnam was a factor prompting French conquest in the 19th cent. The French captured Saigon in 1859, and after a period of warfare, organized (1867) the colony of Cochin China. In 1884, France declared protectorates over Tonkin and Annam; in 1887 it merged Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China with Cambodia to form a union of Indochina , to which Laos was added in 1893.

Excerpt: The idea for Battlefield Vietnam originally came from one of the bosses at Electronic Arts, who wanted another expansion pack along the lines of Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII. The boys at DICE weren’t particularly enthusiastic about this and it didn’t take long for publisher and developer to agree that the idea was good enough to carry its own game.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... VIETNAM In the first millennium BC, the Chinese empire expanded into what is now Vietnam. China's hold on the area was maintained, more or less, for about the next 1000 years. Europeans came to the region in the 1500s and by the early 19th century, France was the undisputed foreign force in Indochina. French colonial rule expanded, which ultimately led to popular discontent. In 1954, the Vietnamese under Ho Chi Minh defeated the French at Dienbienphu. By armistice, the country was divided into a northern, Communist entity and a south under the French-created king Bao Dai. Refugees poured into the south and in 1955, the king was dismissed as a result of elections held in October of that year. The Republic of Vietnam was declared soon after. The conflict between the north and the south soon widened into a quagmire that engulfed the United States, some of its allies, and neighboring parts of Southeast Asia. The withdrawal of the US military from the country in 1975, led to the entire country coming under communist control, which is how it remains today. The US has made some inroads into establishing a relationship with Vietnam but progress is slow and the memories still relatively fresh of the conflict that claimed so many lives over so many years.
