Geography
Unlike most other countries of a similar size, Vietnam extends across two climatic zones, with a moderate climate in the North, and a tropical climate in the South. The country measures more than 1,650km from North to South with a coastline about 2,000km long, covering an area of 329,560 square kilometres. Laos and Cambodia share its western borders, with China to the North, and the South China Sea to the East and South. There are five distinct geographic regions: the mountainous north with peaks above 3,000 metres; the Red River delta of Hanoi; the Annamite Mountain Range, which divides North and South; the narrow coastal strip between the Annamite Mountain Range and the South China Sea, and the Mekong delta in the South. Climate
Covering two different climatic zones, Vietnam has a moderate northern zone, with winter from November to April, and summer from May to October, and a tropical southern zone, with the climate much like the rest of Southeast Asia. The south's cool, dry season is from November to January, the hot dry season from February to April or May, and the rainy season from May or June to October. Vietnam is occasionally affected by typhoons during the rainy season.

Vietnam is a long and narrow country, lying completely in the tropical zone. Its landmass forms the shape the letter S on the east side of the Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Vietnamese eastern border consists of more than 3,000 km of coastline, facing the East Sea and the Pacific Ocean. To the north, Vietnam shares its border with China, while to the west, with Cambodia and Laos. Vietnam's S -shapes landmass widens in the north and in the south. Northern Vietnam has large plains lying in the river basins of the Red, Lo, and Chay Rivers, which flow in a northeast-to-southwest direction into Bac Bo Gulf. North and northwest of these plains are large hilly and mountainous areas. Northern Vietnam is influenced by a monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons and high humidity. In order to cultivate land and earn their living, inhabitants of the north built dikes over the centuries, resulting in today's system of dikes that are thousands of kilometers long along the river banks. Southern Vietnam has the Mekong River, which originates in China, and flows through Laos and Cambodia before entering Vietnam. In Vietnam, the river splits into nine tributaries before flowing into the East Sea, which is the reason the Vietnamese call it the Cuu Long (Nine Dragons) River. The rich and fertile Mekong Delta region is the leading rice producer in the country. The south has only two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season.

Vietnam consists of five geographical zones:
    THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS
    RED RIVER DELTA
The Red River delta is very much the cultural and historical epicenter of Vietnam. Here the first independent Kingdom was created in the 10th century. Covering an area in excess of 15,000 square kilometers, the population has grown rice on the rich alluvial plains for thousands of years.
Over the centuries the area has been extensively cultivated and a network of canals and dykes interlace the rice paddies. Despite this irrigation process the area is still very susceptible to flooding, as many parts of the delta are less than three meters above sea level.
SOUTH OF THE RED RIVER DELTA
This area, immediately to the south of the fertile plains of the Red River delta is dominated by the Truong Son mountain range, formerly known as the Annam Highlands. This mountain range stretches more than 1,200km south, stopping a mere 80km from Saigon. The highest peak, Ngoc Linh Mountain stands at 2,598m in Kon Tum province. The Truong Son range also created an important cultural divide between the East and West of the country, the former having a strong Chinese influence whilst the latter a more Indianized one. Further south, on the upland plateau of the Central Highlands, agricultural plantations including coffee and tea exist near the hill resorts of Buon Ma Thuot and Dalat.

Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches. GENERAL INFORMATION
    Geography

Vietnam covers an area of approximately 330,000 square kilometers and shares borders with China to the north and Laos and Cambodia to the west. The terrain is quite hilly in general, with long, flat deltas near Saigon and substantial mountains in the north. Rice terraces are the predominant feature throughout rural areas. Hanoi is the national capital. Saigon is the largest city in the southern part of the country. History
Vietnam has endured more than two thousand years of foreign occupation. China held Vietnam as a vassal state for more than 1600 years until the Portuguese, and then the French, established colonial rule. The battle at Dien Bien Phu, in 1954, ended a century and a half of French control of Vietnam. Following the partitioning of Vietnam in 1954, communist forces in the North fought US-backed forces in the South for almost 20 years. The war officially ended early in 1973, but tensions between Vietnam and the US would last 20 more years. Today, Vietnam is a country focused on the future.
Vietnam is home to more than 77 million people, with 85-90% being Vietnamese. The Chinese make up most of the rest of the population, with Thai, Muong, Nung, Meo, Man, and Montagnard people living mostly in the Northern Highlands.
