The Chinese legacy
However, the impact of other races and nations is dwarfed by that of China. The Confucian code and Buddhism introduced during their occupation of the country have dominated Vietnamese life for two millennia, and will doubtless continue to do so for centuries to come. The Dynasties
The years of the Imperial Dynasties that ruled Vietnam from the 10th to the 19th century were marked by wars and feuds with neighbouring countries as the country expanded to the south and consolidated its territory. Culturally, there was little change under the Confucian administrative structures inherited from the Chinese. The conservative nature of Confucianism limited technological and cultural progress, making the country highly vulnerable to the advanced military power of the French.

History of Vietnam - Culture and background country
History
Vietnam has her own legends concerning the origins of the race but according to the history books the Vietnamese first appeared as one of many scattered peoples living in what is now South China and Northern Vietnam just before the beginning of the Christian era. According to local tradition, the small Vietnamese kingdom of Au Lac, located in the heart of the Red River valley, was founded by a line of legendary kings who had ruled over the ancient kingdom of Van Lang for thousands of years. Archaeological findings indicate that the early peoples of the Red River delta area were among the first East Asians to practice agriculture and by the first century BC had achieved an advanced level of civilization.
The Chinese Influence In 221 BC the Ch'in dynasty in China conquered the neighbouring states and became the first to rule over a united China. The Ch'in Empire, however, did not survive the death of its founder, Shih Huang Ti and this was soon felt by Vietnam.

(Website de Phuong Nam, ISP du VietNam) SOCIAL COMMUNICATION IN VIETNAMESE CULTURE Everybody feels the necessity for contact in daily life. Their characters are revealed palpably in communication. When considering the attitude of Vietnamese people towards intercourse, it could be found that they desire communication but seem very timid. Due to coming of agricultural life, the majority of Vietnamese people are dependent on each other. They treasure good relationships with members in their family as well as in society. The community spirit is the main reason why the Vietnamese especially place a high value on communication. This is regarded as a basic characteristic of Vietnamese culture. The intercourse leads to social relations and maintains the familiarity. Therefore, the Vietnamese like communication very much, which is mainly shown at the following features:

Spoiled by Tourism: Hmong Children of Northern Vietnam
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 2,801 Words Author : Michael L. Gray
Though parents around the world deal with disobedient children, such bold behavior by 12-year-old Saw is uncommon among the Hmong. This ethnic group, numbering around 700,000 in Vietnam, is one of Southeast Asia's largest and widest-spread highland cultures. From their ancestral homeland in southern China, the Hmong over hundreds of years have moved farther south into Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Burma (now Myanmar).
Across this vast distance, some elements of their culture have remained constant over generations. "Hmong children never disobey their parents," says one village elder. He describes Hmong society as one where family and community rules are not broken without immediate censure by seniors like himself. But this elder has not been to Sa Pa, and he has not met Saw and her friends.
Making friends
High atop a beautiful valley near the border with China, Sa Pa is one of northern Vietnam's most popular destinations for both domestic and international tourists. Backpackers and tour groups alike come to enjoy cool weather, stunning scenery, and, most important of all, the Hmong and Dao minority groups with their photogenic smiles and exquisite handmade clothes.

EVOLUTION OF CULTURE
Vietnam boasts an age-long and special culture
that is closely attached to the history of the
formation and development of the nation.
Historians have shared a common view that
Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community
that was formed around the first half of the first
millenium before Christ and flourished in the
middle of this millenium. That was Dong Son
cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian Dragon dance racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which came into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations.
