Vietnam Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world. Despite its ongoing economic liberalisation and the pressures of rapid development, this dignified country has managed to preserve its rich civilisation and highly cultured society. It has discarded its post-war fatigues and the boom in budget travelling, coupled with the softening of government control, have enabled more contemporary and relevant portraits of the country to gain currency in the West. Full country name: Socialist Republic of Vietnam Area: 329,566 sq km

Vietnamese Culture - A 1970's Perspective
Tet 1971 in Vietnam!
By Phu Si Saigon (MF) - When the clock strikes midnight on January 27th, the first day of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, millions of Vietnamese will exchange toasts of good wishes for the coming year of the Hog. The greetings are familiar and always concern the well-being of the family, the focal point of Vietnamese life. "May I wish you," so goes the toast to the head of the family, "nothing but prosperity in your endeavours. May you have a son at the beginning of this year and a daughter at the end. May your fortunes increase tenfold and may peace and happiness be with you and your family..." "Tet Nguyen Dan" or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, begins this year on midnight January 27th, I971 and the festivities will last three days. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are, in the following order: Ty (mouse); Suu (buffalo); Dan (tiger); Mao (cat); Thin (dragon); Ty (snake); Ngo (horse); Mui (goat); Than (monkey); Dau (cock); Tuat (dog); and Hoi (hog). As the old year gives way to the new, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next. This coming year will be the year of the Hog.

http://www.mofa.gov.vn/English/Vietnam/culture.htm
Vietnam boasts an age-long and special culture that is closely attached to the history of the formation and development of the nation. Historians have shared a common view that Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community that was formed around the first half of the first millenium before Christ and flourished in the middle of this millenium. That was Dong Son cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on...) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which come into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations. ROWEN AN E-MAIL Hi, my name is Rowen Sandel and for the past three years I have been teaching third grade at Highland Elementary School in Oakland, California where I'm better known as Mr.Rowen. On September 1st I began a ten month trip that will bring me to ten countries as I literally go around the world. I plan to visit Norway, Italy, Nepal China Vietnam , Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga before returning to the U.S. in early June of 2001. Over the last three years I have had many wonderful students, some of whose families are from Cambodia, Tonga, Vietnam, and Laos and one of the inspirations for this trip came from my desire to visit these countries. I also wanted to visit other places and visit other friends around the world. This website is an opportunity for the children of Highland to see images and learn stories and information about where they or their classmates come from. But it is not just for my past students, students of Highland, or people whose families are from a country I'm visiting. This site is for anyone, child or adult, who wishes to see new things, think about new ideas, and learn about things they could have only imagined before. It is for anyone who is a life-long-learner and wishes to experience the larger world we live in.
