Like a nightmare it comes back. 25 years ago 19 North Vietnamese regular army division stormed Saigon and snuffed out an independent South. Laos and Cambodia fell. Millions died; hundreds of thousands were imprisoned; a million took to small boats. It was an unmitigated disaster for liberal ideas about the place of man in society.
Yes, on that day "we" lost and "they" won. And our generation split. Who were "they"? They were of course the totalitarians who shot their way to power in SEAsia. And, "they" also were the totalitarian sympathizers found world-wide who helped the North win.

Frank Rich: The festering Vietnam culture war Frank Rich NYT
NEW YORK When George W. Bush's handlers had him dress up as the 1986 Tom Cruise of "Top Gun" to dance a victory jig on an aircraft carrier, they didn't stop to think that he might soon face an opponent who could be type-cast more persuasively in his own Tom Cruise role. John Kerry was in real life a comrade of Ron Kovic, whom Cruise played to great acclaim in the 1989 "Born on the Fourth of July." Kerry, like the movie's hero, was a decorated Vietnam soldier who became a star activist for Vietnam Veterans Against the War upon returning home.
In a pivotal scene in the film, delegates at the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach eject Kovic and his fellow protesting veterans from the hall, call him a traitor and spit on him. If that incident has a certain angry passion, it may be because the director was Oliver Stone. Like both Bush and Kerry, Stone was a son of privilege who attended Yale University in the mid-1960s. Like Kerry but unlike Bush, he went on to combat in Vietnam, won a bronze star and then turned against the war.
But just where was Bush during that convention fracas dramatized in "Born on the Fourth of July"? We still don't know. The summer of '72 is midway through the missing months in the president's résumé - a time when, in the still undocumented White House account, the young Bush was supposedly completing his National Guard service while campaigning for a senatorial hopeful in Alabama.

Vietnam Culture The Exotic Sounds of Ca Tru Ca tru music sounds strange to the uninitiated. Clicks and clacks accompany the centuries old ballads. It is not the kind of music that inspires toe tapping or humming. Once almost extinct, a club in Hanoi is reviving this uniquely Vietnamese musical tradition and teaching new generations that to participate in a ca tru performance is to be transported to another age and once you start to recognize the art's fine subtleties it can be intoxicating. Originally, ca tru, also called hat a dao or hat noi (literally song of the women singers), was associated with a geisha type of entertainment. Attractive young singers entertained men in a relaxed environment, sometimes serving drinks and snacks. Men might have visited a hat a dao inn with friends to celebrate a successful business deal or the birth of a son. Ca tru flourished in the 15th century in northern Vietnam when it was popular with the royal palace and a favorite hobby of aristocrats and scholars. Later it was performed in communal houses, inns and private homes. These performances were mostly for men. When men entered a ca tru inn they

th century and taking over the Mekong Delta from the Khmers in the 18 th century. The remaining 12%, approximately 8 million, belong to 53 distinct ethnic groups. The Hoa are the second largest group, they are the country’s ethnic Chinese, living predominantly in urban areas. Though families have lived in Vietnam for generations, they have historically tried to maintain their separate Chinese identities, language and school systems. 60,000 Cham are the remnant of the once-vigorous kingdom of Champa, which flourished from the 2 nd to 15 th centuries, most live along the coast. Most of the Chams, who were profoundly influenced by both Hinduism and Buddhism, are now Muslims. There is a superb collection of Cham statues at the Cham Museum in Danang. Vietnam’s other 51 ethnic groups live mostly in the highland regions, some, like the Tay, are quite large, numbering about one million people, other groups are tiny, such as the Romam and the O Du, each of these number little more than 100 persons. The mountainous area of Vietnam, the Truong Son Mountain range, stretches from north to south and covers two-thirds of the country and because they lived in this mountainous area the name Montangards, or mountain people was given to these minority people by the French. They are fiercely independent-minded and resent interference from outsiders; traditions, customs, language and dress is distinctly different one from another.

Introduction
It is not easy for many Vietnamese born and raised in Vietnam to write about our culture. Often, when submersed in it we don't realize that the New Year celebration, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, or the leaf hat that some of us wear and fish sauce we cook with are distinctively ours. And usually, it is not until we experience other cultures do we become aware of our own. Our VietMedia team has labored over this section in hope that it will help anyone interested to learn more about the beauty and richness of Vietnamese traditions. In addition we hope to remind the younger Vietnamese generations, especially those living outside Vietnam, of their unique heritage. We are open to any constructive comments or opinions. Please feel free to email VietMedia if you have any concerns.
