RELIGION
Vietnam contains a rich mixture of religions, reflecting the influences of many cultures. Traditional Vietnamese religion included elements from Indian beliefs and three Chinese religious systems: Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Other religions include relatively new sects such as Hoa Hao, associated with Buddhism, and Caodaism, a synthesis of Christianity, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Christianity, particularly the Roman Catholic church, claims as many as 6 million followers. THE ARTS
Poetry has long been the most popular and powerful form of literature in Vietnam, and poets have always been highly respected. Most people can recite at least a few verses of "Kim Van Kieu," a poem that deals with love and sacrifice. This work of more than 3,000 lines was written by the poet Nguyen Du, who lived during the late 1700's and early 1800's.
Novels began to gain wide popularity in Vietnam during the years of French rule. They remain popular, especially in the south. But the Communist leaders now carefully regulate the books the people may read.
Vietnamese painting shows the influence of both ancient Chinese and modern French art. Examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture include mostly pagodas (temples), tombs, and old royal palaces.

he richness of Vietnam's origins is evident throughout its culture. Spiritual life in Vietnam is a grand panoply of belief systems, including Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Tam Giao (literally 'triple religion'), which is a blend of Taoism, popular Chinese beliefs, and ancient Vietnamese animism. The most important festival of the year is Tet, a week-long event in late January or early February that heralds the new lunar year and the advent of spring. Celebration consists of both raucous festivity (fireworks, drums, gongs) and quiet meditation. In addition to Tet, there are about twenty other traditional and religious festivals each year. As a language, Vietnamese is exceptionally flexible and lyrical, and poetry plays a strong role in both literature and the performing arts. Folk art, which flourished before French colonization, has experienced a resurgence in beautiful woodcuts, village painting, and block printing. Vietnamese lacquer art, another traditional medium, is commonly held to be the most original and sophisticated in the world. Music, dance, and puppetry, including the uniquely Vietnamese water puppetry, are also mainstays of the country's culture.

Four great philosophies and religions have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity. Over the centuries, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have melded with popular Chinese beliefs and ancient Vietnamese animism to form what is known as Tam Giao (or 'Triple Religion'). Vietnamese (kinh) is the official language of the country, although there are dialectic differences across Vietnam. There are dozens of different languages spoken by various ethnic minorities and Khmer and Loatian are spoken in some parts. The most widely spoken foreign languages in Vietnam are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English, French and Russian, more or less in that order. Popular artistic forms include: traditional painting produced on frame-mounted silk; an eclectic array of theatre, puppetry, music and dance; religious sculpture; lacquerware and ceramics. Vietnamese cuisine is especially varied - there are said to be nearly 500 different traditional dishes that include exotic meats (but think twice before you eat a rare animal) and fantastic vegetarian creations (often prepared to replicate meat and fish dishes). However, the staple of Vietnamese cuisine is plain white rice dressed up with a plethora of vegetables, fish (which is common in Vietnam), meat, spices and sauces. Spring rolls, noodles and steamed rice dumplings are popular snacks, and the ubiquitous soups include eel and vermicelli, shredded chicken and bitter soups. Fruit is abundant; some of the more unusual ones include green dragon fruit, jujube, khaki, longan, mangosteen, pomelo, three-seed cherry and water apple. Vietnamese coffee

Country Info Vietnam Introduction Vietnam General Data Vietnam Maps Vietnam Culture ... Vietnam Time and Date Vietnam Culture Back to Top Chinese influence permeated all aspects of traditional Vietnamese culture, while Western influences have been strong in the 20th century. Vietnam's Confucian heritage is seen in the importance of family to the Vietnamese. Families are essentially patrilineal, but Vietnamese women work alongside men in many jobs and play a major role in raising children and managing family finances. When possible, the Vietnamese prefer to work from early morning until early evening, with an extended rest period in the heat of midday. In rural areas, both men and women wear trousers and shirts or blouses. On formal occasions and in urban areas, Western-style clothing is common, including skirts and blouses for women. Women still sometimes wear a form of the traditional ao dai, a long, slit tunic worn over pants. Traditional Vietnamese culture reflected the influence of neighboring China. Vietnamese art, architecture, music, and literature all followed Chinese forms. With the advent of French colonialism in the late 19th century, however, the influence of Western culture replaced that of China. Modern Vietnamese cultural expression combines the socialist realism of Communist systems with current trends in the capitalist world. Rice is the staple food. Vietnamese cuisine incorporates elements of both Chinese cooking and the cuisines of other Southeast Asian countries. Noodle soup with chicken or beef broth (pho), a distinctive kind of spring roll (cha gio), and the use of fermented fish sauce (nuoc mam) for dipping and seasoning are among the many noteworthy dishes.

These ends are connected by a mountainous spine that runs along the South China Sea. On the west, Vietnam is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, and to the north, lies China. The food of the north, through stir-fries and noodle-based soups, shows the heavy influence of Chinese cooking. The mountainous middle section, with the former Imperial capitol, Hue, at its center, has an abundance of fresh produce.

Vietnam History
Vietnam's recorded history begins in 111 BC, when the Chinese conquered the northern part of the region and ruled for more than a thousand years. For the next 700 years, Vietnam was a collection of small, competing kingdoms (the northern and southern portions of the country vied for control even then). The Nguyen dynasty took power in 1802 and ostensibly ruled most of Vietnam until 1954, but the Nguyen emperors were largely controlled by the French after 1887. During World War II, the Japanese invaded. After the war, the French attempted to hang on to Vietnam as a colony. The Viet Minh, a coalition of Communist and Nationalist groups, forced the French out in 1954, and the country was temporarily divided along the 17th parallel. The North consolidated under Communist leadership, and the South went to the Nationalists. An election was supposed to have been held, but the South, suspecting that the North would win, refused to participate. A few months later, the South declared independence.

Vietnam - Culture Vietnam is a fascinating cross-over point between Chinese and South East Asian cultures. It is also influenced heavily by the French and Americans.
There are three main cultural sections of the country - the North is identifiably Vietnamese, the South much more cosmopolitan and the section between Na Trang and Hue is redolent of ancient Cham
art and culture - their towers and sculptures are magnificent and can be seen in many of the museums of the area.
The South is much more economically advanced than the North, and throughout the country there is a vibrant contemporary art scene, particularly in painting.
Unlike the other countries in the region bricks are a popular building material, with many kilns to be found around the Hanoi area.

Vietnam Culture I t can be said that there were three layers of culture overlapping each other during the history of Vietnam:
Local culture,
T he culture that mixed with those of China and other countries in the region, and
The culture that interacted with Western culture.
T he most prominent feature of the Vietnamese culture is that it was not assimilated by foreign cultures thanks to the strong local cultural foundations. On the contrary, it was able to utilize and localize those from abroad to enrich the national culture.
T he Vietnamese national culture emerged from a concrete living environment: a tropical country with many rivers and the confluence of great cultures. The natural conditions (temperature, humidity, monsoon, water -flows, water-rice agriculture ...) exert a remarkable impact on the material and spiritual life of the nation, the character istics and psychology of the Vietnam
ese. The Vietnamese nation was formed early in the history and often had to carry out wars of resistance against foreign invaders, which created a prominent cultural feature: a patriotism that infiltrated and encompassed every aspect of life.

In our first year we had 44 families from 8 different states and over 70 children; in our second year we had 60 families from 13 states and over 100 children joined us and the third year was our biggest ever with almost 300 people in attendance from 18 different states!! In Summer 2004 we are excited to add to the fun by having a camp in Minnesota and Massachusetts! NEW DATE!

VIETNAMESE CULTURE Family and Social Culture
Before the late 1980s, nearly all Vietnamese people lived in villages, and the cultivation of wet rice was the principal economic activity. The basic component of rural society was the nuclear family, composed of parents and unwed children. Respect for parents and ancestors is a key virtue in Vietnam. The oldest male in the family is the head of the family and the most important family member. His oldest son is the second leader of the family. Sometimes, related families live together in a big house and help each other. The parents chose their children's marriage partners based on who they think is best suited for their child. When people die, their families honor their ancestors on the day of their death by performing special ceremonies at home or at temples and by burning incense and fake money for the one who died. The Vietnamese believed that by burning incense, their ancestors could protect them and their family from danger and harm. Days before the ceremony starts, the family has to get ready, because they won't have enough time to get ready when the guests arrive and the ceremony starts. Usually the women cook and prepare many special kinds of food, like chicken, ham, pork, rice, and many more including desserts.
