    Did Irishmen Discover America?
    By John Tiffany
Fabulous stories have been told of a sixth-century Irish monk, St. Brendan the Navigator. According to these legends, he discovered America centuries before the Vikings, let alone Christopher Columbus.

Mystery Cave Could Prove Ancient Visitors Were Here By John Tiffany A spelunker named Russell Burrows from the southern Illinois town of Olney allegedly discovered a mysterious cave along a branch of the Little Wabash River. If even some of the stories told surrounding this mysterious event are true, what are said by some to be the startling contents of the cave would set traditional American archeology on its ear. We need to understand what we will really be fighting for in Iraq
    by Jonathan Glancey
    And it's one, two, three
    What are we fighting for?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn -
    Next stop is Vietnam
Remember Vietnam? More than two million Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans died. Country Joe McDonald was a war veteran. He first sang the I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag in 1965: And it's five, six, seven
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! We're all gonna die
It was innocent Vietnamese villagers, though, who died at My Lai on March 16 1968. Led by Lieutenant William Calley, "Charlie Company", a unit of the US Eleventh Light Infantry, massacred 500 unarmed villagers. My Lai was a turning point in the uncalled-for US invasion. How, Americans began to ask, could the US have God and "Charlie Company" on its side? In what ways was "Charlie Patrol", President Johnson and the US morally superior to the Vietcong, Ho Chi Minh and an ancient Far Eastern civilization? Even if it were worth fighting to keep communism and its weapons of mass destruction at bay by blasting civilians with napalm, what positive message was Uncle Sam preaching? "Men who take up arms against one another in public," said Abraham Lincoln - quoted in Lt Calley's trial - to Union troops during the US civil war, "do not cease on this account to be moral human beings, responsible to one another and to God."

Topics for Vietnamese-U.S. Research Cooperation: A Vietnamese Perspective
Tran Quoc Vuong, Chair, Department of Archaeology, National University of Hanoi
The Center for Intercultural Studies affiliated with the National University of Hanoi is at present undertaking a number of research projects on Vietnamese history, folklore, and archaeology and is interested in cooperating with American scholars conducting research in these areas. A Study of East-West Cultural Interaction The Center is undertaking a research project entitled "Vietnam: 100 Years of East-West Cultural Interaction," dealing with a period beginning at the end of the 19th century. The research examines the transformation and development of literature, music, the arts, theater, architecture, and the press in Vietnam from the colonial period to the present. Vietnam's Archaeology Vietnamese archaeologists are researching the three following ancient civilizations of present-day Vietnamese territory: 1) The Dai Viet civilization, which originated in the Red River Delta and expanded southward between the 10th and 19th centuries. Related research topics include the production and trading of ceramics, and maritime archeology (including the port visits of Chinese junks); 2) The Cham civilization, which flourished between the second and seventeenth centuries. A related topic of interest is the relationship between Champa and other southeast Asian polities; 3) The Mekong Delta civilization (also known as the Oc Eo or the Phu Nam civilization) and the Khmer civilization, which flourished between the second and third century and the seventh and eighth century. In this area, Vietnamese scholars have worked closely with Indian, Australian, Polish and Japanese scholars.

    The Yellow River Valley
As in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and along the Indus River, Chinese civilization began within a major river valley. Modern China itself is a huge geographical expanse. Around 4000 BC, this huge area contained an almost infinite number of ethnic groups and languages. The course of Chinese history, however, is in part dominated by a single ethnic group and language. This history, in which a vast area populated by diverse ethnic groups became, over time, a more or less single culture, began in the Yellow River Valley

    The Three Cultural Heroes
In the Chinese version of history, however, history begins with three semi-mystical and legendary individuals who taught the Chinese the arts of civilization around 2800-2600 BC: Fu Hsi, the inventor of writing, hunting, trapping, and fishing; Shen Nung, the inventor of agriculture and mercantilism, and the Yellow Emperor (around 2700 BC), who invented government and Taoist philosophy (compare this history with the Hebrew version of the founding of civilization and its arts in Genesis, Chapter 3). While Western historians dismiss these Three Cultural Heroes as legend, they were regarded as historical fact for most of Chinese history.
