Search WWW August 7, 2000: During the last month, we travelled through 5000 years of history. The journey began in Jerusalem, a tense city at the crossroads of 3 major religions. The emotions apparent in the streets inspired us to learn more about history and religion, setting the tone for the month. In the Middle East we learned about Christianity, Judaism, and Islam from guides, citizens, monks, whomever we could talk to or whatever we could read. Petra, in Jordan, blew us away with the carved sandstone tombs. We didn't expect the vivid blues, greens, yellows, whites, and reds swirled together in the living rock, forming natural decorations in the carvings. Petra exceeded our highest expectations, and one full day was not enough. The Red Sea beckoned. We jumped in for some fantastic diving with colorful coral and lionfish. Then we returned to discovery of ancient cultures with a cruise up the Nile. We couldn't believe how advanced the ancient Egyptian civilization and technology was - the temples and tombs that dot the banks of the Nile show fantastic sophistication. We floated along, observed 'modern' Nile living while we learned about the polytheistic culture that thrived starting in the 21st century BCE. We celebrated 9 months of marriage in Cairo, visiting the Great Sphinx. Then we travelled to China with a switch to Emperors and Buddhism. While the Forbidden City and Lama Temple were enjoyable, the scenery surrounding the Great Wall really made an impression on us. China possesses some beautiful countryside. The next four days we cruised along the Yangtze River to see the gorges that will be flooded after the completion of the world's largest dam.

Treks
Treks in areas of breathtaking beauty in northern Vietnam are an old specialty of Our Tours. We have expanded this program to include treks in the Central Highlands. These trips through hilltribe villages (sometimes with no electricity or running water) include homestays with the hilltribes. On some of the treks, the terrain can be rough and one has to be reasonably fit for the longer treks. GO!

A great homage to the Ch m civilization vanished in the turbulence of history. I t is an ancient kingdom of Indochina known in the past as " L¢m Ấp " ( or Lin Yi ), then Chiªm Th nh ( or Tchan-Tcheng in Chinese) and located in what is now central Vietnam between   Nẵng and Phan Thiết. The amazing Cham towers in red bricks and sandstone found in   Nẵng and Phan Thiết are the sole silent witnesses of a civilization vanished in the turbulence of history. The Chams were no doubts of Indonesian origin and occupied the coasts of central and south Vietnam. In 2nd century, this people of sailors adopted Hinduism on contact with Indian merchants, which gave birth to the kingdom of Champa. A Chinese traveller of 4th century described them with a particular typical physique: Big straight nose, black and curly hair, practicing a funeral ritual that consists of cremation at the sound of the drum. The Ch ms were not only excellent sailors but also formidable builders and ingenious farmers. The Ch ms arrived at achieving the unity of the country at the beginning of 5th century after having resisted several rounds of Chinese domination attempt. Their capital was located at Indrapura Tr  Kiểu ), near D  Nang ( former

Follow the Heritage Road Tourism officials from the three Central Vietnam provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Danang City and Quang Nam as well as travel industry professionals and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism have joined forces to form the World Heritage Road - a new initiative to develop and promote tourism to Central Vietnam. The World Heritage Road will stretch from Vinh to Hue to Danang to Hoi An/ My Son to Nha Trang to Dalat, around 1,500km of the highway 1 along the coast of Central Vietnam. It is so-called because the route encompasses no less than three UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites; the sixteenth century silk route trading port of Hoi An; My Son Valley, the sacred remains of the ancient Cham civilization, and the ancient imperial city of Hue and perhaps a fourth one the Quang Binh province. It's a marvelous project which will bring together the various provinces and attractions of Central Vietnam and provide countless business opportunities for the people of Vietnam.

Vietnam
by Nancy Freeman Introduction
Looking for a quick lunch of soup, salad or a sandwich? Maybe you ought to think Vietnamese. Perhaps an exquisite vegetarian meal? Well, then, why not think Vietnamese? Or is tonight time for multiple dishes, contrasting flavors, varied textures and exotic ingredients? Once again, it's a good time to think Vietnamese. Or perhaps something healthy and "lite?" Guess what: think Vietnamese. While Vietnamese food has long been appreciated in France, the former colonial power, U.S. residents are only beginning to discover its many fine features. Vietnamese chefs like to refer to their cooking as "the nouvelle cuisine of Asia." And indeed, with the heavy reliance on rice, wheat and legumes, abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables, minimal use of oil, and treatment of meat as a condiment rather than a main course, Vietnamese food has to be among the healthiest on the planet.
