As Vietnam opens its doors to welcome the world at large, many people have no idea of the stunning visual beauty and traditional culture that Lie beyond the threshold. To many, the name Vietnam brings to mind only haunting images of a war-torn land in some remote corner of Southeast Asia, an image which continues to be exploited on the big screen and in print, and which remains deeply etched in the minds of all who found themselves a part of that war and its aftermath. Beyond such images lies the real Vietnam, a unique and fascinating land of great physical and rich cultural diversity whose history spans over 4,000 years.
Picture a land of idyllic tree-lined beaches, tranquil bays dotted with the sails ofjunks and sampans, offshore coral islands, mountains, valleys, primal forests, plains crossed by countless rivers and emerald rice fields enriched with the varied scenes of everyday life. The traditional rural life, embodied in the villagers tilling the land with rudimentary tools under their conical hats in the patchwork paddy fields, and children riding their water buffaloes home from the fields at the end of the day, contrasts dramatically with the sights, sounds and pace of the cities whose busy streets overflow with humanity borne along on a rising tide of bicycles and motor scooters. Such are the images of present-day Vietnam.

Your Own Private Tutor: The Ancient Civilization of Vietnam By Steven K. Bailey Do you find certain Vietnamese concepts a bit hard to grasp? Do you feel confused by such non-western practices as Taoism and ancestor worship? Do aspects of the culture sometimes cause you to scratch your head in puzzlement? If you're feeling perplexed, don't worry. A little cross-cultural confusion is to be expected during your first visit. Fortunately, there is help in the form of The Ancient Civilization of Vietnam , a text written by Dr. Nguyen Van Huyen (1908-75). This little gem is not a guidebook, but a schoolbook. This seems appropriate, for I have always found Vietnam, not to mention the rest of Asia, to be one long learning experience. Dr. Nguyen earned his Ph.D. at the Sorbonne and served as the North Vietnamese Minister of Culture from 1946 until his death in 1975. He first published his work in 1945 under the title

    Angkor and the Khmer Civilization
The great Khmer Empire, best known for its astonishing temples at Angkor, has long fascinated visitors, arm-chair tourists, and scholars alike. In his new book, "Angkor and the Khmer Civilization," archaeologist Michael Coe has written what I believe is, simply, the best current (2003) presentation of the history and culture of this wonderful (literally: full of wonders) ancient civilization. Reading Coe's book is like having a delightful one-on-one conversation with a first-rate thinker, scholar, and teacher. Coe's writing is superbly well-organized, logical, fascinating, concise, and comprehensive. The book is enhanced by numerous high-quality photo illustrations and maps, fully referenced bibliography and notes, and a better-than-average topical index. Most importantly, this book is obviously a labor of love. Coe, a well-known Mayanist, returns here to his first love, the archaeology of southeast Asia; although political circumstances (e.g.: the Vietnam War, the Pol Pot regime) prevented him from digging in the field, Coe has mastered the literature and walked the sites; his book illuminates the full chronological sweep of Khmer history and culture, from its prehistoric beginnings through the post-Classic period, as never before. It is intellectually exciting, a pleasure to read, and sure to delight anyone from the casual tourist to the experienced professional. Put it together with Freeman and Jacques' "Ancient Angkor," and you have the perfect companions for your next trip to Angkor.

Brief description A small country which has loomed large on the world's stage, Vietnam is an ancient civilization of distinctive identity-both preserved and transformed as many cultures have clashed over its soil. Distinct among Southeast Asian countries, twenty-first-century Vietnam has preserved its ancient and colonial architecture and pristine coastline. Today, so much of the exotic and beautiful remains, yet so much is changing, new, and exciting as this friendly Asian society reinvents itself and its economy. Ho Chi Minh City's treasures include Independence Palace, history and war museums, Cathedral Notre Dame, Glac Lam pagoda and the Tay Son lacquerware factory. At Tay Ninh, near the Cambodian border, lies a holy temple of Cao Daism, blending elements of Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Taoism and Islam. Other sites include the Viet Cong's underground tunnels and the Mekong River and tropical islands.

VIETNAM
The territory of present-day Vietnam was divided in three cultural zones: that of the Khmer in the south, of the Cham in the centre, and of the Viet in the north. The ancient kingdom of Champa in central Vietnam stretched from the present province of Quang Binh in the north to the province of Binh Thuan in the south. It presumably consisted of various loosely related principalities alternatingly taking primacy. Between the fifth and thirteenth century kings of the Champa kingdom founded Hindu temples in My Son , which is about 70 kilometres to the southwest of Da Nang. The most important Buddhist site is Dong Duong, c. 65 kilometres to the south of Da Nang (see map Back to General Information
